LIST OF HOUSEHOLDS IN 1801

The first bound volume of the parish register of Christ Church was opened in 1801 by the Rev. Philander Chase, rector 1799-1805. Attached to the fly-leaf there are three manuscript records, contain- ing entries from 1766 to 1809. When Mr. Chase assumed the rector- ship he considered the parish records in a neglected condition. He, therefore, on September 26, 1801, began to compile a list of the households belonging to Christ Church. The full text of his own account of this action is to be found on pages 321-322 of Volume I of The Records of Christ Church. The list begun by Mr. Chase is pre- sented herewith, although it was obviously never carried out in full.

EDITORIAL PREFACE

Prior to 1796 the rectors of Christ Church kept no record of marriages or, if they did so, all such records have been lost.

The first entry of a marriage which the parish register contains was made in 1796 by the Reverend John Johnson Sayrs, A.M., who held the rectorship from December 25, 1795, to February 14, 1798.

From 1796 to 1916 the custom of entering on the register the record of a marriage was observed by the successive rectors with fairly uniform fidelity but the form of the entries varies widely. In some cases only names and date are given, in others ages, parentage, residence and witnesses appear in full or in part.

The register of marriages, on file at the City Hall, Poughkeepsie, which was begun in 1882, has occasionally been consulted in the preparation of this parochial list in instances where the handwriting was obscure or statistics lacking.
