PREFACE.
THOSE who lightly esteem the value of a City Directory, should consider, for a moment, what would be the absolute disasters and confusion, the loss of time and inconveniences, that would be the necessary consequences of the lack of such an indispensable assistant, not only to business men, but to every inhabitant, and nearly every stranger who visits the city. And, if there should be any one so exacting and unreasonable as to demand absolute perfection in such a work as this, which must of necessity be undertaken ab ovo and completed within a little more than a month's time, let him reflect on the complicated machinery and the enormous amount of labor to be employed in collecting and arranging in alphabet- ical order all the names of the heads of families, of the business men, and house- keepers, on this Island, with their places of business, their dwelling-houses, and occupations, and he will not, we are confident, be so much disposed to complain of an error, as to wonder at the existence of so small a number.
In all other kinds of book-making some assistance can be derived from pre- ceding laborers; but, in making a Directory, every year the work has to be begun afresh, and the only advantage to be gained from the last year's work, is the knowledge which experience alone can afford of the difficulties to be encountered, and of the best plan for organizing the army of assistants who are employed in collecting the required information. The difficulties in collecting the information needed for the Directory would be comparatively inconsiderable, if they required labor alone to overcome. But, strange as the fact will seem to most people, there is a vast number of persons who, for some reason or other, either from a timid reserve, or a disposition not to confer a favor, refuse to give any informa- tion about themselves ; and several well-known individuals of the city request that their names shall not be put into the Directory this year. But we cannot afford to show any partialities, and the name of every person who has a home, or a place of business, within the limits of the city, will be found in the Directory for 1856. The method pursued in collecting and arranging the names is such that an error should hardly occur, and yet it must inevitably happen that some errors will be found, though they will be fewer than in any previous number of the work. After all the names have been collected, they are compared with the names of the last year, and when one is missing, a messenger is dispatched to discover what has become of the person it represents; and to guard against any unfaith-

PREFACE.
fulness or carelessness on his part, a second one is sent upon the same errand, to act as a check upon his report. By this means it is hardly possible for a name to have escaped us.
In looking for names in the Directory many mistakes occur, and errors are attributed where none exist, from not understanding the proper orthography of the name looked for. This is another source of difficulty in compiling the work, which costs much labor, and demands constant care and great experience. The similarity in the sounds of names of different orthography leads to innumerable blunders. We can best illustrate this matter by quoting some examples from the body of the work itself. For instance : there is the very common name of Brown, of which we have three varieties : Brown, Browne, and Brownne. There are three kinds of Abbots; as, Abbatt, Abbot, and Abbott. Abraham has four distinct tribes; as, Abraham, Abrahams, Abram and Abrams. Acheson, which is a rather famous name just now has also, four varieties, as, Acheson, Atchason, Atchinson, Atchison. The oldest of all names has but three variations; as, Adams, Addams, and Addoms. The Andrews have just as great a variety ; as, Andres, Andrews, Andreas, Andros, Andrus, and Anderiese. There are other names still more distinct in their orthography, and as similar in their sounds; as, Addy, Adee, Eadie, Eddy, Eddey, Edey ; Alcott and Olcott; Ayres and Eayrs; Backster, Bagster and Baxter; Balch and Baulch ; Backus and Backhouse ; Bauer and Bower ; Bowen and Bowne ; Borden and Berdan ; Bramall and Bramhall. The Burns have ingeniously contrived to divide themselves into seven distinct names, which are spelled, Burns, Burnes, Bearns, Beirns, Bearnes, Byrnes, and Byrns. The representatives of the Cain family have been at great pains to get rid of the odor of the original orthog- raphy; as, Cahn, Cain, Caine, Cane, Kahn, Kain, Kaine, Kane. There is a class of names which may be spelled with a Cor K, which require great care in look- ing for them to be sure of the correct orthography, as Carr and Karr, Case and Kase, Cassel and Kassel, Caten and Katen, and so on.
There are some names in which C is sounded soft, as Cisco and Sisco; the greatest variety of orthography may be found in the Fry family, which spreads itself into Frear, Freer, Freas, Frese, Freece, Frees, Freese, Fries, Friese, and Frieze. But the Gallaghers rather exceed the Frys; as, Gallagher, Galagher, Galegher, Gallager, Callagher, Gallaher, Gallegher, Galliger, Galligher, with all the Gallighans and Callighans to help in the confusion, and make the Directory a book of Babel. The Macs are a troublesome family of names to look after ; as, the McAdams and Macadams, the McCauleys and Macaulays, lead to con- tinual errors.
The simple name of Nicol, which seems hardly susceptible of variation, may be found spelled in no less than twenty-seven different styles in the Directory ; the name of Neal magnifies itself into fourteen different shapes, all of which might be mistaken for the same name when spoken. Sims is a very simple name, but it compounds itself into Symes, Simes, Seyms, Simms, Symms, and Syms; and even the respectable name of Smith expands into Smithe, Smythe, Smyth, Smidt, Smidd, Smit, Schmidt, Schmid, Schmitt, and Schmit.
5
PREFACE.
We give these instances to show the necessity of an accurate knowledge of the orthography of the name which is sought for, as well as to afford an idea of the perplexing difficulties of properly arranging them. It will be found, that not only are the names alphabetically arranged, but where several names of the same kind occur together, the occupations and residences are also placed in alphabetical order.
The great increase in the population and business of the city has of course added considerably to the cost of compiling the Directory, but a careful conden- sation and classification of the names and business occupations have prevented any increase in the bulk of the volume, so that a much greater amount of infor- mation is now given in the same space than has ever been done before. Perhaps the better way to give an accurate idea of the amount of labor bestowed upon the Directory, will be to give the statistics and cost of its compilation. The work of collecting the names was commeneed on the 2d of May, and the entire work completed and bound, ready for delivery, on the 16th of June.
There are about 150,000 names, and an Appendix, containing 115 pages. The labor of canvassing and compilation was equal to about 3,000 days, or 10 years' work for one person. In the printing department there were employed 84 com- positors, 10 proof-readers, with an equal number of copy-holders; and five Adams' power presses were kept running night and day. In the bindery the services of 200 persons were required. It will thus be seen that the getting up of a Directory is a work of no ordinary labor.
The work is offered to the publie as a key to the city of New York, its people, their residences, occupations, and places of business. If it should not be found absolutely perfect, the publishers have reason for believing that it is as nearly so as industry and perseverance could make it ; and, in judging of its merits, all they can ask, is, that it shall be tried according to what the publishers have aimed to make it, and not by any imaginary standard it may be assumed they should have arrived at.
