WEBSTER'S CALENDAR OR THE
ALBANY ALMANAC.
This is believed to be the oldest Almanac now published in the United States. The first work of the kind in America issued from the press of Stephen Daye, near Boston, in 1636, a little more than two centuries ago. In 1953, Dr. Franklin commenced the publication of his famous Poor Richard's Almanac, which ceased to appear many years since. An Almanac of considerable popularity was printed about the middle of the last century, by Nathaniel Ames, of Boston, and in 1784 the celebrated publisher Isaiah Thomas, began an Almanac in the same place, which had a successful career; but all these have gone off the stage. In 1754, Charles R. Webster published the first Almanac in Albany, which he issued annually during his lifetime, and his surviving partners, Messrs. E. W. & E. C. Skinner, continued it till '843, when it was purchased by the present publisher for a valuable consideration, by whom it has been continued to the present time; the issue for 1853, now in press, making a period of seventy years of uninterrupted publication. It has long been regarded as an indispensable appendage to the Solar System throughout a large region of country, as if seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night, were in some way regulated by it; insomuch that the flood of gratuitous Almanacs have not in the least checked its circulation. Its stability of patronage is in a measure to be attributed to the care which has ever been given to the Calendar tables. These were for a great number of years prepared by Andrew Beers; afterwards by Edwin E. Prentiss, and for the last ten years by Prof. George R. Perkins, late of the State Normal School, whose reputation as a mathematician is a guaranty of the highest order for the character of the tables in this Almanac. So well is this matter understood, that several almanac publishers have been in the habit of appropriating the tables in whole or in part to their own use, which dis- honest practice has compelled the publisher this year to resort to a copy- right for protection against that species of piracy. Not only the tables, but a considerable portion of the miscellaneous articles, are prepared every year expressly for the work, and in some instances cost a good deal of labor. Yet this indispensable little work is afforded at a mere tritle - a sum so small as to render the work itself insignificant in the eyes of many who can not do without it, and who little suspect the time and expense required in getting it up.
Webster's Calendar or the Albany Almanac is published annually, and sold wholesale and retail by
JOEL MUNSELL, No. 5S State Street, Albany.

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS :
MUNSELL'S CITY DIRECTORY FOR 1852-53 .- This work is a decided improvement upon any that has heretofore been issued. It is printed on excellent paper, with new type, and its execution is a credit to the establishment of the publisher. The contents are just what could be desired in a work of this character, presenting in addition to the names of our citizens with their residences and places of business, such infor- mation relative to the churches, banks, insurance companies, railroads, stages, steamboats, the various societies, g.c., &c., as are needed for reference. It contains 1900 more names than the Directory of last year. In all it contains 11,795 names. It is a work of 500 pages, and among other matters of interest not enumerated above, we notice the recent laws relating to the city, both legislative and municipal; the original city charter, and what must be very useful to many, and especially to strangers, a good map of the city.
The expense attending the getting up of this indispensable work, it will be admitted, must be quite heavy; and it is the duty of our citizens, and principally the mercantile and professional classes, to do their share

towards remunerating the publisher for his enterprise. As Mr. MUNSELL has given the public a Directory so much enhanced in value for the same price as those of former years, we hope the sale of the work may be increased .- Atlas.
MUNSELL'S CITY DIRECTORY .- We have before us Munsell's City Directory for 1852-3. It bears the proof of the great and successful effort that has been made by the publisher to make it complete, and in every respect better than any of its predecessors. It contains more pages, a great many more namnes, an improved map of the city, a great many new matters of general information, essential to such compilation, and is well printed and bound. Any other book of the size, costing much less labor and money to produce, could not be sold at so low a price as this-and we understand that the sales do not yield a fair remuneration. It is a book which few can do without. To all it is an almost indispensable compendium of reference-and it is for the con- venience and interest of all to sustain it .-- Argus.
ALBANY DIRECTORY .- We have just received from the publisher, the City Directory for 1852-3. It is got up in Mr. M.'s usual neat style of typography. It has an addition of some 32 pages to the number pub- lished last year, is supplied with a new map of the city, in which are contained the location of new streets, &c., and has several other new features-all of which are well calculated to meet the requirements of our citizens .- Register.
