A
LIST OF SURNAMES
WHEREIN MANY OF THOSE ARE COMPARED WHICH HAVE THE SAME, OR VERY NEARLY THE SAME, PRONUNCIATION BUT DIFFERENT ORTHOGRAPHY.
Illustrating the fact that twelve hundred and fifty nine surnames are generally pronounced only in five hundred and twenty-two different ways; showing also the care required in obtaining as well as in giving names for a Directory, and designed to facilitate those who may look for information in this work.
It must be observed however, that all the surnames here compared, are not always to be found in this publication.
Entered, according to Act of Congress, in the year 1843, by John Doggett, Jr., in the Clerk's office of the District Court of the Southern District of New York.

CORK
SOLE BOOTS
SHOE
This unique and useful invention has met the approbation of every gentle- man of taste, and is rapidly coming into general use among all persons who regard ease, grace, comfort and durability, as desirable requisites in their Boots and Shoes. It makes the Boot or Shoe more elastic, preserves its ori- ginal style and shape, and gives the hollow part a beautiful and elevated arch ; thereby allowing the heel to be worn very high with perfect ease, or quite low without exposing the pantaloon strap to injury. It also keeps the foot from pressing forward, and retains it in a natural and easy position. The under- signed and John Dick, 109 Nassau-st., are the only persons who make and sell Boots and Shoes with this invention, in the Cities of New-York, Brook- lyn and Jersey City. These Boots took the highest Premium at the Fair of the American Institute.
CONGRESS GAITERS .- A large and elegant assortment of this new and popular article constantly on hand.
Gentlemen who are desirous of obtaining a fashionable pair of Boots, con- structed in the manner above mentioned, are invited to call at
138 Fulton Street, New-York, L. BROOKS.
