ANOTHER Volume of the Directory, a work pro- duced by the most Unremitted application and drudg- ery, is now presented, by the Editor, to the public use ; he cannot say public patronage, for the purchase of the work is confined to a very small number of indi- viduals.
When the book formerly contained from ten to fif- teen thousand names it appeared about the 20th to the close of June ; now, it is published about a fortnight later, and contains rising twenty-seven thousand names ; these are collected by persons employed by the Editor ; the compiling and preparing the copy for the press is the work, solely, of the Editor, by whom the printing of the work is also superintended.
So long back as when the Directory contained not more than six or seven thousand names the publica- tion was delayed about as late ; but it must be re- marked, that the then editor, father of the present, bestowed a far greater degree of labour upon the same . quantity of matter ; at that time, so much experience in the business had not been had. and accuracy could only be obtained by a far greater degree of application. At the present day, every expedient must be adopted . and all management used in order to enable the Edi- tor to conclude his task at the time of present pub- lication.

No annual Directory published in this country, or parhaps in any other place, has contained any thing like a comparative number of alterations. About eight thousand names have been withdrawn, and about nine thousand added, which gives an increase of about one thousand names. The removals have been unu- . sually numerous, and finally, the numbering of many streets, and the alteration in the numbering of many others, have produced an immensity of labour. To the reflecting candid patrons of the work this brief statement is made ; and to such it will be sufficient to ensure the publisher their friendly support. able men that the Editor finds his more ennobling re- ward : to such he tenders the most sincere acknow- ledgement for their support : and he freely admits that there are many honourable men among the pur- chasera of the work, for whom to labour.is a pleasure. The quantity of particular and definite information obtained,. the degree of accuracy which character- ises the work, and the brief period of time in which it is completed, considering the innumerable difficul- ties attending the operation, afford cause of wonder- ment to the mind of the publisher. There are some persons who presume to say the work ought to be con- cluded earlier, and that it ought to be afforded at a lower price ; but as such men do speak without any the least knowledge as regards the difficulties or the expenses of the work-the publisher can only notice thein by regretting, that he is unfortunately, by po- verty of circumstances, compelled to labour in a ve- cation in which he is subjected to the animadversions of men with such poverty of intellect :-- The work contains nearly twenty-eight thousand names, gene- rally speaking most correctly spelt, the information minute and definite, alphabetically arranged, and ox- hibiting a degree of accuracy unequalled in any other work that has come to the knowledge of the Editor : and this being expressly perfected for the convenience and benefit of the citizens of this city, afferding to them an indispensable article of the utmost accom- medation, the Editor considers himself honestly enti- tled to all the reward which their liberal patronage can bestow.
The publisher, as well as most people, hashis hobby, (' which he rides after his own fashion ; and whilst 1 claiming this privilege he is willing others should enjoy the same, and as said before, he does not complain of those who by sacrificing all honesty on their part live by borrowing his Directory ; he has .the consolation of knowing that they impose also on others as well as himself, The following disclosure is made by a wri- ter in the American of 8th Feb. last, relative to the Philharmonic Society : " By an unanimous vote passed this season, a subscription . was to have been raised to defray the expenses incurred," " although the.

sote was passed, although all the MEMBERS APPEND. FD the concerts, although the list of members compre- · hends a large number of our RICHEST citizens and most of the fashionable world-not more than half have paid their subscriptions" _! The other half of the most wealthy and the most respectable of our citizens are to be seen DAILY BORROWING my Di- rectory ;- and yet the world calls me crusty.
Facts, as Major Noah says, are the basis of all reasoning : and in netice to the illiberal remarks of some people upon the effect of an opposition, the edif tor confines himself to stating, that, during the po- riod of the publication of Longworth's Directory, some eight or nine opposition Directories have been attempted, which in every instance save one, were published at an earlier day than this Directory ; and also afforded the publisher on these occasions a safe opportunity of advancing the price of this work.
The ambition, the integrity, and also the interest of the Editor are the only motives that can urge him to a prompt and faithful execution of the task. :
The publisher has concluded to abstain from all denunciations against borrowers of the Directory ; he thinks they must be unenvied in the pitiful son- sations they must experience while sneaking into their neighbors to borrow a Directory. One rich mer- chant, with an income of many thousands, has com- menced an atoning act of reformation : the other gon- tleman, with his fees of office amounting to many thousands per annum, is impenetrable to the daily dissatisfaction expressed by his neighbours, whom he - yet pesters by intruding to borrow their Directory -- a book which he is abundantly able to purchase ; but, as has been remarked before, when men do choose to be pitifully mean, there , truly is no mis- take in the case.
A few years since Fulton street was numbered throughout, which the Editor presumes to consider should have rendered unnecessary a renumbering of this street for a century to come : nevertheless it bas
. ' again taken place, much to the dissatisfaction of the residents, and greatly to the displeasure of the Editor, who had just made his collections.
