J. SMITH.

LETTERS

To the Proprietor of Hamilton's Worm Destroying Lozenges. . I think it my duty to inform you, that I have experienced the hap- piest effects from your Lozenges, having been much afflicted for four years past, with various complaints caused by worms, particularly a constant pain in my stomach and bowels, frequent and severe head- xche, with a general lassitude and wea" ness, during which time I had the best medical advice that could be obtained from the most skilful physicians I could hear of, both American and Europeans, but without any alleviation of my disorder.

I should, too, probably have continued without relief, but for your Worm Destroying Lozenges, which brought from me, an astonishing quantity of small white worms, about the size of a coarse thread, and, in a short time I found myself perfectly free from all my former com- ;laints, and have enjoyed a good state of health for five months past.

I have constantly recommended your medicine, and shall, as long as I live, having, from my own experience, reason to believe it to be an invaluable and naparalleled remedy. Should any person wish fur- ther information, I will, with pleasure, satisfy their inquiries on this subject,

JOHN J. ABERCROMBY,

Soap and Candle Manufactory, No. 28 Bridge-street, Baltimore.

To the Proprietor of Hamilton's Worm-Destroying Lozenges.

I had been a long time afflicted with a violent and gnawing pain in wy stomach, a dull, heavy, continual head ache, with a frequent swimming in my head, accompanied with dimness of sight, and some- times partial blindness, and was rendered incapable of attending to my business, through loss of strength; when my appetite would sud- denly become astonishingly voracious. I firmly believed myself to be. in a consumption, which must soon put a period to my life ; when happily hearing of several cures performed by Hamilton's Worm Lo- zenges, in complaints which could not be accounted for, I took two doses, which expelled an incredible number of small sharp pointed

7

worms : in short, I now enjoy as perfect health and strength, as ever I did in my life, and I believe iny cure to be entirely effected by means of your medicine.

My brother, witnessing its surprising efficacy, was induced to take a dose, though in tolerable health, which occasioned him likewise to void a great quantity of worms of the same kind, and thereby proba- bly prevented his experiencing those dreadful disorders with which I was afflicted.

A sincere desire that others, in similar circumstances, may receive the same benefit, is the reason for my sending you this account.

Yours, very respectfully, AQUILA COLDING.

At the Mills, Hartford Road, two miles from Baltimore.

From Mr. Benjamin Williams, No. 30 Baltimore-street, two doors above South-Gay-street.

I have a son six years of age, who, for four years past, has been generally in a very unhealthy state, particularly in summer ; fre- quently afflicted with' alarming convulsion fits, the whole of his little frame wasted fast, his breath fætid, and almost constant itching at the nose was excited, with other alarming symptoms. During the course of the above period, the "advice and attendance of three of the most eminent physicians in Baltimore, were successively procured. Each of these gentlemen in his turn, declared worms to be the cause of the child's disorder, and exhausted his skill in attempts to expel them. Pink root, steel filings, with a variety of other medicines, were ad- ministered without the least success. It was once pronounced impos- sible for the child to live many hours.

I had heard of your Worn Destroying Lozenges, but with many did not think highly ofso cheap a medicine, until a gentleman of my acquaintance (Mr. Wm. S. Moore, auctioneer,) in whose family they had been used with good effects, advised me to make trial of themn ; I accordingly gave my- son a dose agreeable to directions, which soon expelled eight large worms, some of them about eight iuches in length ; a second dose brought away four more of similar size ; a third dose being administered, no worms appeared. The child recovered and now enjoys a good state of health.

Letter from the Hon. A. C. HANSON, Esq. late Chancellor of the .state of Maryland, to the editor of the Maryland Gazette.

SIR-For the good of the public, as well as from a desire to do jus- tice to a man of merit and genius, I request you to publish the follow- ing cases.

A young man in my family, who had read Dr. Hamilton's advertise-

ment, and who had, for some time, as he says, experienced the symp. toms described by the doctor, as indicating the presence of worms in the human stomach or intestines, resolved, without consulting any person whatever, to try the doctor's remedy.

He accordingly procured a box of the Lozenges. Last evening he took four of the yellow, and this morning he took an equal number of the brown kind. They did not, as he says, operate harshly except one stool, when there came from him a worm, perfectly white, about a yard in length, as broad as his little finger, and having a number of joints, about an inch or an inch and a quarter distance from each other.

Besides this worm, he says there came from him a considerable number of small flat worms, about three quarters of an inch. in length, and nearly the same in breadth. He did not think of counting then, but he says there were more than twenty.

I regret extremely that I had not an opportunity of seeing the tape- worm ; the young man not having, as he ought to have done, taken measures for preserving it, and the simple servant girl, who attended his chamber, having, before I had heard of his taking the medicine, thrown it and the other worms into the necessary, not thinking it of consequence to take care of them. The girl, however, and another servant concurs with him respecting the worms, which appeared in the vessel ; and the tape-worm they say, was alive, so far as to have motion, affer it came from him.

It is needless to describe his symptoms, as he says they were exactly. such as are described by the doctor.

Another young man of my family also, without any consultation or advice, one evening and morning about three months ago, took seven lozenges, which operated powerfully. No worm came from him ; but in the course of two or three days he was quite well; and has. since a considerable accession of flesh and strength.

In short, although I, like many others, have been incredulous with respect to the virtue of Hamilton's Lozenges, I am at length perfectly convinced of their great efficacy and utility.

CURES IN NEW-YORK.

Letter from Mr, Henry Ackerman, bricklayer, Pearl-street, near Broadway. Jan. 24, 1812.

It would be ungrateful were I to withhold my testimony in favour- of Hamilton's Worm Destroying Lozenges. I had been between five and six years past, mach indisposed, and latterly often tormented with severe griping and pains in the bowels, troubled with offensive breath, with violent feverish fus, and other obvious symptoms of

worms; but frequently hoaring your Worm Lozenges recommended in cases similar to mine, I deterinined on a trial of them, as my last resource. The first dose evacuated twelve or thirteen feet of a tape- worm ; two other doses were taken, which brought away a quantity of matter broken like skins and pieces of worms. I suppose the tape- worm, voided at different times, must in the whole have exceeded forty feet. The almost incredible benefit I received from this medi- cine, induced me to give a dose to a child of mine who was pining aud sickly ; it produced the same good effect in this instance, expel- ling a worm of a different kind, from nine to twelve inches long, and at the same time restoring a good state of health.

HENRY ACKERMAN.

The wife of Mr. William Stilwel, merchant, Water-street, New- York, had been in a poor state of health for several years past, and was often confined to her chamber by indisposition, her symptoms were various, though generally attended with great debility ; some- times they were supposed to indicate dropsy, at others a disease of the liver. Having suffered a very severe attack, without obtaining any relief from her physician, and almost despairing of recovery, she was induced to make a trial of Hamilton's Worin-Destroying Lozenges: having heard of their performing cures in several complaints that could not be accounted for. Two doses were taken, which brought away a large worm, nearly half a. yard in length, and a great quantity of matter, evidently pieces of worms, &c. On taking the third or fourth dose an entire animal shaped like a crab, was expelled ; its parts were examined with the aid of a microscope, when the claws, feet, &c. appeared perfectly formed ; differing but in few respects from the common crab Mrs. Stilwel began from that time to reco- ver her health --- three months have since elapsed and she has been free from her former complaints, and has acquired a degree of health and strength which for years before she had been a stranger to: She being free to extend the knowledge of a medicine from which such benefit has been received, bas authorised Mrs Lee, the present pro- prietor, to state these particulars for the good of others.

New-Yora, June, 5, 1807.

Mrs. Esther Bends, Wall-street, New-York, had for five years been liable to periodical Ats, which at last appeared of the most alarming and dangerous uature, so much so, as to leave no doubt in the minds of her friends that they would evidently proro fatal. This lady was cured eight months ago by Hamilton's. Worm Lozenges, and has not had the least return of her malady since ..

Andrew Stockholm, a boy of 13 years of age, of Bushwick, Long- Island, was unwell for upwards of seven years, frequently had fits, was A. 5

troubled with griping pains, became greatly emaciated and had no appetite. Pink-root was administered, but not finding any benefit, larger quantities were given, which injured his eyes so much its.use was not further persisted in. The doctors who afterwards attended him relieved him for a time, but his disorder again returned. flam- ilton's Worm Destroying Lozenges were then administered, which brought away many worms from him. He has since grown amazingly ; has had a considerable accession of flesh, and is now in perfect health, nor had he any return of his former complaints, from the time he took the lozenges.

Mr. John Verk, Bowery-Lane, near the Methodist Meeting-House, grateful for the benefits his family has derived from the Worm Lo- xenges, desires to give his public testimony in favour of this medicine. flis only child was snatched from the margin of the grave, and re- stored to health, which has been providentially continued.during a lapse of several months.

Mr. Drake Fowler, shoemaker near the two mile stone, Bowery- lane, states, that one of his children, aged six years, was violently afflicted with a variety of complaints, which appeared to be caused by worins. The most distressing symptoms were, restlessness at night, extreme debility, and loss of flesh; frequent convulsions in a most alarming degree, and being constantly troubled with tenesmus. To avert the melancholy prospect of dissolution, recourse was had to a variety of Medicines. Pink-root, worm-seed, and some kind of worm lozenges, were successively tried. Instead of producing any salutary effect, the danger seemed to increase. The afflicted parents happily hearing of the numerous cures performed in their neigh- bourhood by Hamilton's Worm Lozenges, immediately administered the medicine agreeable to the printed directions. The effects pro- duced, exceeded the most sanguine hopes of parental affection. About three months have since clapsed, and the darling (to repeal the mother's rapturons phrase) " has cheeks as red as cherries, and feels as strong as a lion." During the opperation of the medicine. it is believed that upwards of a quart of maw worms were discharged, and twenty-seven large-worms, from six to eighteen inches long; were counted.

Mr. Gilbert Coutant, merchant, near the two mile stone, Bowery. Road, knowing the above and other cures, was induced to administer the Lozenges to some of his children who were in a very pining and sickly state ; the symptoms being simlar to those in the case last .re- cited, need not be particularized. The medicine produced the same happy consequences.

FITS CAUSED BY WORMS.

The extraordinary cure my wife nas experienced by the use of Hamilton's Worm Destroying Lozenges, ought to be made public for the benefit of those who may be afflicted in a similar manner : with this intention I now inform you that she had been subject to severe convulsion fits upwards of twenty years. These fits were apparently brought on by trifling circumstances. A drink of cold water, or stumbling in walking has often occasioned a recurrence of a fit, and their frequency was such as to render her incapable of all busi- uess. Hamilton's Worm Lozenges becoming celebrated in my neighbourhood, were administered, and a quantity of small worms and matter were brought away, which no doubt had been the cause of her fits ; she having had none since the lozenges were taken. Nearly two years have elapsed, and my wife continues free from fits, and has become very healthy. Wishing these circumstances may be serviceable in extending the knowledge of your excellent medi- cine.

I am &c. JOHN SHOTWELL.

Rahway, Aug. 27, 1807.

Mrs .. H. LEE, widow of Richard Lee, N. York.

An infant (aged 5 weeks) of Mr. Henry Ewbanks, taylor, Charles- street, Baltimore, was dangerously afflicted with convulsion fits, so that his life was despaired of, but was perfectly cured by one dose of Hamilton's, Worm Lozenges which expelled several worms, the un- doubted cause of the child's disorder.

A sister of the above gentleman, aged 22 years, living at New- .Castle, Delaware, after exhibiting for upwards of 15 months every symptom of an exceedingly dangerous consumption, experienced & rapid recovery by the use of this medicine.

CURES IN PHILADELPHIA.

Philadelphia, May 22, 1806 TO H. LEE.

Having in a most singular manner experienced in my family the astonishing efficacy of Hamilton's Worm-Destroying Lozenges, pre- pared by the late Mr. Lee, I feel it my duty to add the following curious case to the list of remarkable eures performed by that cele- brated medicine My daughter at the age of 17 months was taken iHl with those symptoms which are supposed to denote worins ; after having tried a number of things which are said to be good in such cases, without any benefit, we had the attendance of a respecta- ble physician ; but she still continued to decline in health, and at the end of six months became so weak that she could not walk, nor keep food on her stomach, it was so extremely disordered. At this ins-

12

teresting period, one of our neighbours recommended your Lozenges sa earnestly, we were induced to send to Mr. Birch's for a box of them ; on, her taking the third dose, according to the printed directions, there. came from her a living animal about three quarters of an inch long, and of a most frightful appearance, being very white, with a great number of legs, and something which resembled wings, by which it appeared to spring, and which it did repeatedly, to our great surprise, about the game distance that a small toad can hop on the ground. Its form was altogether unknown to every person who saw it. It lived in water about 18 hours. We afterwards put it in spirits, and it is now in the possession of Dr. Bleight, of this city. The child grew better from that day; in a very short period began to walk again, and is now in perfect health .. Yours, &c.

WILLIAM BRADLEY, Callow-hill street, between 2th and 9th streets.

Any person may be satisfied of the accuracy and authenticity of this singular occurrence, by making inquiry in the neighbourhood ; many of the neighbours saw the creature alive, and are well acquainted with the above particular. W. B.

TO H. LEE.

Some time last spring, I was afflicted with the loss of appetite, giddi- ness in the head, fever and great debility, so that I could scarcely walk. In this distressing situation, I took many things, but without benefit. An acquaintance in the country sent to me to procure a box of Hamilton's Lozenges. Curiosity prompted me to read the directions where i found my complaint exactly described by the doctor. I im- mediately sent for another.box of the Lozenges, and took one dose, which brought away a large quantity of worms, and I felt greatly re- Leved. Encouraged by this I took another dose, which was attended with the happiest effects, as it relieved me entirely, and am now in a better state of health, than for a considerable time past. I have since given then, to my children, and can speak from experience. that they are a most valuable medicine, and am happy to add my testimony to numberless others of their efficacy.

SARAIL JOHNSON, No. 140 North Second-street.

A daughter of Mr. Ewing Wiley, No. 109 Cedar-street, Philadelphia, was dreadfully afflicted with worms, insomuch that her life was with great reason depaired of ; her complexion faded, and grew pale and sallow ; her eyes sunken ; her appetite was lost, and succeeded by a painful and constant sickness at the stomach ; and the general wasting and debility was accompanied with every appearance of a dangerous

13

fever. From this deplorable situation, she was relieved, and restored do a state of perfect health and strength in a few days, by the use of Hamilton's Worm Destroying Lozenges, which expelled a great num- ber of large, pointed worms, from six to nine or twelve inches in length, one of which being of a most extraordinary thickness (supposed from half an inch to an inch in diameter), was opened and found to contain a quantity of young ones. The above was communicated by Mr. Wiley, believing its perusal may be useful, to many, by. extending a knowledge of a medicine which merits universal attention.

New-York, October 16, 1815.

Mrs. H. Lee,

A daughter of mine aged two years, was so afflicted with worms, that she lost the use of her limbs ; happily I heard of your justly cele. brated worm Lozenges, and made a trial of them, two doses of them as per direction rescued her from the grave, and she has continued for several years past in good health. I do therefore warmly recommend. Hamilton's Worm Lozenges as worthy of public attention. 2 Capt. EZEKIEL WADE.

HAMILTON'S ELIXIR,

A Sovereign Remedy for Colds, Obstinate Coughis, Asthmas, Sore Throats and approaching Consumptions.

Thousands are too well acquainted with the nature and effects of. empirical medicines daily offered for the cure of the above.complaints .. Dear-bought experience has taught them that oily and heating medi- cines, joined with strong opiates (or sleepy drugs,) repeated doses of. which flatter and deceive the patient for the present, by procuring mo- mentary ease ; experience, I say, has taught thousands, that the com- mon opiates and balsamics, as they are called, finally aggravate every disorder of the breast and lungs, in their most distressing symptoms ; that they load the stomach and impair the digestion, inflame the whole. system, increase the difficulty of breathing, and excite fever. But the qualities of this valuable discovery, are evinced by perfectly opposite effects. A single trial will prove, that it restores the determination of the fluids to the surface of the body, and brings on the common health- ful perspiration ; that it dislodges and evacuates the tough, viscid phlegm or mucus, strengthens the weakened vessels of the lungs ; sheathes the acrimonious humour which irritates them, and finally dis- charges it. Thus striking at the root of the disorder, the symptoms are of course effectually and permanently conquered, the reverse of com- mon medicines which weaken the constitution and give strength to the disorder, for the sake of moderating for the present some of its painful effects.

To Parents who have Children afflicted with the Hooping. Cough.

This discovery is of the first magnitude, as it affords immediate re -. lief, checks the progress, and in a short time entirely removes the most cruel disorder to which children are liable. The Elixir is so perfectly agreeable, and the dose so small, that no difficulty arises in taking it.

Mr. Abijah Henley, Bridge-street, Baltimore, was cured by one bottle of Hamilton's Elixir, of a very complicated disorder occasioned by a severe cold caught several months ago. He breathed with the greatest difficulty, and was often thrown into weakening sweats when he attempted to walk any distance, and his voice would frequently fail in such a degree that he could only attempt to whisper. He has been upwards of six weeks without a return of his complaints, and desires to give his public testimony in favour of this invaluable medicine.

Three children belonging to Mr. Samuel Webbet, Front-street, Bal- timore, were dangerously ill of the Hooping-Cough, the youngset so much as to afford no hope of its recovery, when a bottle of Hamilion's Elixir was procured, the good effects of which were immediately per- ceived, and the three children restored to health in a few days.

From Mr. John Israel, Printer, Pittsburg.

" I have no doubt but the sales will increase daily. Hamilton's Elixir is already celebrated for its virtues. For it and the lozenges there is a rapid sale."

Mr. Charles Myers, Hamstead-hill, near Baltimore, had been a long time dangerously indisposed, and was reduced to the lowest state of weakness insomuch that his recovery appeared extremely doubtful. His- complaints, which seemed to be afections of the breast and lungs, and general debility, occasioned thereby, yielded little, but rather progres- sed under the treatment of several eminent physicians ; when by the use of Hamilton's Elixir, his distressing cough was inuncdiately alle- viated, and every other symptom rapidly subdued. Four or five bot- tles entirely removed his complaint, and restored him to an excellent state of health and strength, which he has for upwards of a year past. enjoyed without interruption.

From Mr. Jacob Clayland, Centreville.

" You will receive a box by this packet, in which please send me a supply of Hamilton's Elixir, which is getting into great credit, and sells well, several here declare it is the best medicine they ever used for a cold -- and. I know it has cured the Hooping Cough in several chil- dreu."

From LUTHER MARTIN, Esq. late Attorney-General of the state of Maryland. ·

. I comply with your request in stating my opinion of Hamilton's Elix- ir. It has been used in my family for two or three years past, with uniform success, whenever cold, coughs, or similar complaints, have rendered medicine necessary. I have myself found it an excellent. and agreeable remedy for a very painful and. troublesome affection of the breast, accompanied with soreness, and with obstructed and diffi- cult breathing ..

On these accounts I do not hesitate to recommend Hamilton's Elixir; as a valuable medicine, and deserving public attention.

LUTHER MARTIN.

David Gilbert, No. 46 South Fourth-street, Philadelphia, voluntarily, maketh oath as follows, namely that about eight months ago he caught. a severe cold which resisted every remedy he could think of, and pro- duced the most alarming effects, he could procure, no rest for incessant coughing, nor breathe without great pain and difficulty, and was finally so exhausted as to be scarcely able to walk about, which left his friends little hopes of his recovery, though the prescriptions of a re - spectable physician were constantly attended to. In this situation,

hearing of the efficacy of Hamilton's Elixir, a bottle. was procured from Mr. . Birch, No. 37 South Second-street ; the first dose of which afforded the most surprising relief, and gave him more ease than he had enjoyed during the whole of the above period ; and before the contents of one bottle were taken, he was perfectly cured, his strength and ap- petite recovered, and not a symptom of his former distressing com- plaints remained.

The above particulars the said David Gilbert wishes to, be, made public, as a testimony of his gratitude and for the benefit of mankind.

DAVID GILBERT;

Sworn and subscribed before me, John Jenning, Alderman.

Philadelphia, Aug. 9, 1806.

TO H. LEE ..

Being desirous to make public for the good of others the excellent, quality of HAMILTON'S ELIXIR, prepared by the late Mr. Lee, I have sent you the following account of the benefit I have received from it ; which I hope will induce others to give it a trial. In consequence of a bruise on the breast received from a fall, my health grew bad, my breathing became very difficult, and frequently I have had suddenly to rise up in my bed with all the horrors of immediate suffocation. Add to these, a constant pain in my breast, and a cough, a great loss of strength and flesh, and you may conceive that my symptoms evidently indicated an approaching consumption, The advice of a most eminent
