THE EXTENSIVE USE of the telephone in hotels, apart- ment houses, office buildings and large residences, makes it essential that in buildings of these types provision be made to carry the large number of wires necessary for furnishing telephone service.

When it is realized that in a number of build- ings there are as many as 1,000 telephones in service and that it is necessary to carry two wires from each telephone to some central point in the building, the importance of making adequate provision for telephone wir-

Information for Telephone Users

HOW TO USE THE TELEPHONE

Speak directly Into the mouthpiece with your lips close to It.

Speak distinctly and deliberately.

Obtain telephone numbers from the Telephone Directories. Calling numbers from memory, or tak- Ing them from cards, letterheads, etc., often results In wrong number connections and delays.

If the number is not found in the Directory, call "information." Calls for information are free of charge.

When giving a number to the operator, state-(1) the name of the central office wanted, (1) each figure of the telephone number, and (8) the party | again. line letter, If there is one. Numbers which are even hundreds or even thousands should be given as wach, fatend of each figure being given separately.

Examples:

John 1259 "John, one-two-five-three"

Main 126-J "Main, one-two-five, Party J" Broad 4808 "Broad, four-eight-hundred " Worth 6000 "Worth, five-thousand" If you are calling from s party line message rate station, announce the letter of your station, after giving the call as above.

Example: "This is party J calling."

After giving the number, listen to the operator as the repeats it. If she repeats the number correctly. say. "Yes" or "Right." If she does not repeat the number correctly, say "No" and give the number

After calling a number, remain with the receiver at your ear until the called number answers or until you receive a definite report.

While you are waiting for the called number to answer, the intermittent burr-r-ing sound of the ringing ugnai will indicate that the work of putting up the connection has been performed by the operators concerned.

When the called number answers, announce first the name of the person to whom you wish to talk and then your own name or the name of your frm. Answer telephone calls promptly in order to avoid & report of "don't answer" being given.

When answering calls, Announce your name or the name of your frm.

To call back the operator, move the receiver book . up and down slowly.

Do not hang up the receiver until you are ready for the operator to take down the connection.

When you are not using the telephone ses that the receiver is on the hook, large and down.

LOCAL AND TOLL SERVICE

CLASSES OF TELEPHONE CALLS There are five classes of telephone calls, vix .: 1. Local Calla. Station-to-Station Toll Calla. Person-to-Person Toll Calis. Appointment Tull Calla.

Messenger Toll Calls. LOCAL CALLS

A Lacal Call is one to any telephone located within the same local service area. Local calls should be made by number except on calls made for the pur- pose of fling telegrams and on certain emergency calls, as hereinafter shown. The collection of tele- phone charges from the called -telephone will not be permitted on Jocal calls.

Overtime Charges-In accordance with contract and tariff provisions a "local message" is a connec- tion on a local cali five minutes or less in duration. Sthough It Is not the Company's general practice to time all local messages as it is to time all toll messages, overtime charges will be applied when- over local messages from public telephone or sub- Scribers' message rale stations are found to ma- terially exceed five minutes in duration.

Messenger Service on local calls will not be ar- fanged for by the Telephone Company for the purpose of calling to a given telephone persons having no telephone connection. It is sometimes possible for calling parties to arrange for messenger service through public telephone agents located in the dis- friet called. The calling | party must make the necessary arrangements with the agent at the called telephone for the messenger service and for payment Therefor. The Telephone Company assumes no re- ponsibility for the messenger service rendered and will not bill the charge for such service against the calling subscriber's telephone. The regular charge will be made for the connection to the called tele- phone, and if a return call is made from the called telephone it will be charged to that telephone.

STATION-TO-STATION TOLL CALLS

& Station-ta-Station Toll Call la one made for . telephone located outside the local service area where the calling party does not specify that either particular person or a particular private branch echange station is to be reached. Charge Is made if connection is completed, the time for which the charge is made beginning when the station called fret answers. More rapid service can be given, and lower rate is charged on station-to-station toll call than on person-to-person toll calls.

Station-to-Station Toll Calls must be made by Number, whenever Telephone Directory Information opsering the called' point la Available, in the same manner as local calls. When this information is not wallable at the calling telephone, the number may be obtained, unless the distant point is one reached through "Long Distance", by calling the "Informa- tion" operator and giving her the name and address of the suberriber at the distant telephone. To obtain this information for "Long Distance" points, call "Long Distance" and give the details of the call to the operator. An exception to this rule applies to Station-to-Station toll calls to Philadelphia which may be made in the same manner as toll calls to suburban points.

When & Btation-to-Station toll call in desired and the distant place is not a "Long Distance" point, give the number to the first operator who answers and remain with the telephone receiver at the ear until the called number answers or until the oper- ator reports. If the distant place is one reached through "Long Distance" give the number to the "Long Distance" operator. Station to Station toll calls to Philadelphia may be made in the same manner as toll calls to suburban points.

If the call is given to the operator by number only. It will be handled es a station-to-station call.

The collection of telephone charges from the called telephone will not be permitted on station-to-station toll caila.

Messenger Service will not be arranged for by the Telephone Company on station-to-station toll calls. Buch service may be secured by the calling party under the conditions specified for local calls preceo-

Rates-Dependent upon the time of day. at the originating peint, at which a station-to-station toll call is established, one of three schedules of rates applies.

Between 4.30 A.JE. and 8.80 P.M .- Day Rates only. Between 8.80 P.M. and 13 Midnight-Evening Rates approximately one-half (%) the Day Rates. Between 13 Midnight and 4 10 A.M .- Night Rates approximately one-fourth (%) the Day Rates.

Evening and Night rates do not apply where the Day rate la 25 cents or less. In such cases the Day rates apply.

The minimum Evening or Night rate is 25 cta. For explanatory schedule of stallon-to-station Day. Evening and Night rates see "Rate Schedules" following.

Rates for toll calla to certain nearby and important points will be found on the fifth page following in this Telephone Directory.

PERSON-TO-PERSON TOLL CALLS

A Person-to-Person Tell Call Is one made by name for a particular person reached through a telephone which is located outside the local service area and at a point to which there is a person-to-person toll rate. Charge is made if communication is estab- lished with the particular person called, the time for which the charge in made beginning when con- versation with the particular person starts. If con- nection is established but conversation is not held, a Limited charge is made, as hereinafter provided under "Report Charges."
