Toll Calla between points short distancee apart must be made as station-to-station calls, no person- to-person calle being accepted between points where the station-to-station Day rate is less than 15 canta.


To make a person-to-person toll call, or to secure information concerning the rates on such calls, tell the operator who first answers, the name of the city, town or locality in which the person with whom you wish to talk Is located. The operator will connect you with & Toll or Long Distance operator who will identify herself by answering "Toll Operator" or "Long Distance." When the Toll or Long Distance operator answers, give her the following details:


The telephone number from which the call is made and your name, If you desire to give your name.


The number of the telephone desired, if known. The firm name or the name and initials of the person under whose name the telephone is listed and the street address, if the tele- phone number is not known.


The name of the person with whom you wish to speak.


The name of the alternate person, if you are willing to talk with anyone else in once the person desired cannot be reached.


The name of the city er town and slate In which the person desired in Joosted.


Remain at the telephone until the operator in- dicates that you may hang up the receiver.

Collect Calle-Upon the request of the cutting party, the charges on a person-to-person toll cell, Including Report Charge, will be collected from the called telephone, If such charges are accepted by the called party. HOW TO ARRANGE FOR TELEPHONE SERVICE


For the convenience of the public the Telephone Company maintains a number of business offices throughout the city. These offices handle all mat- tera relating to new telephone service, removala, termination of contracts, directory listings, directory advertising, adjustment of accounts, collection of bills, ato., is the territory served by the Central Of- Aces for which these local business offices are re- sponsible.


These offices can, however, handle any business relative to telephone service in any part of the ter- ritory.


The locations and telephone numbers of these of- floss, and the central office districts covered by each, are shown on the second page following.


TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES


The New York City Telephone Directory is issued three times a year, in February, May and October; and contains the listings of subscribers in all bor- ougha of New York City.


For listings,of subscribers in nearby cities, towns and suburbs, consult the Suburban Directory. This Directory is the property of the New York Telephone Company. It is furnished free of cost to subscribers and must be surrendered to the carrier whe delivers the subsequent issue.


Many call numbers are changed and new num- bars listed in every issue of the directory. It is in the subscribers' Interest as well as the Tele- phone Company's that all oki directories are collected, as the use of obsolete telephone books ra- sulte is wrong number calls, which are an annoy- ance to both subscribers and the Company.


The Company assumes no liability for damages arising from errors or omissions in the making up or


printing of Its directories, except in the case of charge listings. in connection with which Its Hability shall be limited to a refund at the annual rate for each listing for the time an error or omission con- tinues after reasonable notice In writing to the Company. - The Company does not guarantee the permanency of call numbers assigned or to be assigned. Subscribers are, therefore, advised not to print telephone numbers on stationery, etc., but to use the phrase "Telephone Connection."

Operators are required to be courteous in their dealing with subscribers but are not expected to em- gage in conversation beyond that necessary to com- plete connections.


To make inquiries concerning contracts, bilis for service, adjustment of accounts, directory Listing, etc., telephone, write or call at the nearest Lecal Commercial Office of the Compihy Hated in this directory.


To make inquiries concerning telephone numbers, ask the operator for "INFORMATION." Consult the directory first, however, as "Information" does mel give out numbers which can be found in this book.


The Company values the prompt reporting of faulty service. Criticisms of the service should always be made by telephone rather than In writing. Ask the operator for "Traffic Manager," using another tele- phone If necessary.

FREE CALLS


Calls from any telephone in the Metropolitan Divl- sion may be made to any Department of the Tele- phone Company in that Division without charge.


The Metropolitan Division Includes the ave Bor- oughs of the City of New York-Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Richmond (States Island), the New York Counties of Nassen, Suffolk (Long Island), Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, De towns of Tuxedo and Greenwood Lake in Orange County and Greenwich, Conn .; also the New Jersey Counties of Bergen, Essax, Hudson, Middleogz, mouth. Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Union and i pert of Ocean County.

Messenger Service -- For toll calls requiring the use of a messenger at the calied station see "Mes- senger Toll Calls" following ..


Appointment Service-For toll calls requiring con- nection between two stations at a specified time we "Appointment Toll Calls" following.


" Leave Word Orders-if the particular person called is not immediately reached at the called tele- phone, the Operator will, at the request of the calling party, leave word (without additional charge) to have him call when ready to talk. On Leave Word Orders a message will be left at the called telephone for the person desired to call a particular toll oper- ator, for example: "Philadelphia Operator." When the person receiving such a message is ready to talk, he should ask the first operator who answers to connect him with the toll operator mentioned in the message.


Rates-The person-to-person rate is approximately one-fourth (%) greater than the station-to-station Day rate between the same points. The minimum person-to-person rate is 20 cents and no reduction Is made in the rates and charges for such toll calls. For explanatory scheduje see "Rate Schedules" following.


Rates for toll calls to certain nearby and Important points will be found on the fourth page following In this Telephone Directory.


Request for Charges if anyone calling from a regular subscriber's telephone (not a public tele- phone) wishes to be notified of the amount of the charges on his call, he will save time by requesting this Information at the time he gives his call to the operator. If the request for such information is not made until the completion of the conversation, unavoidable delay may result while the operator obtains the rate and computes the charges.


. APPOINTMENT TOLL CALLS


An Appointment Toll Call is a person-to-person toll call, the order for which specifies a definite time at which the calling party will talk to the particular person called. The Company can not guarantee the completion of the connection at the exact time specl- fed.


Toll calls between points short distances apart must be made as station-to-station calls, no appoint- ment calls being accepted between points where the station-to-station Day rate Is less than 15 cents.


Appointment toil calls are, made in the same manner as person-to-person calls. The conditions governing Report Charges, Collect Calls, Messenger Service, etc. In connection with person-to-person calls apply to appointment calla.

The rates, charges, and conditions applying messenger toll calls are the same as those specified in connection with appointment toll calls preceding. except that the exact amounts disbursed for the service of messengers will be charged In addition to the charges for. the toll call service. "If there is no telegraph office in your local calling area, you will be connected with "Informa- tlou" who will assist you in determining whether there is a telegraph office located at some other place with which you desire to be connected."


Telephone charges incurred as above for local er toll calls from subscribers' stations will appear en regular monthly bills. Charges for such calla from public telephones will be collected at public telephone stations in the usual manner.


By arrangement with the Western Union Telegraph Company the telegraph charges for Western Union messages fled by telephone will also be billed by the Telephone Company on telephone bills a rendered or collected at public -telephone stations In the usual manner.


Patrons calling telegraph companies for any other purpose than to send a telegram or cablegram should call by number.


REMOVALS (Change In Lecation)


Om account of the time needed for changing tele- phone equipment from one location to another, notice in writing should be given at least ten (10) days prior to the time the change la desired. Buch notics should be addressed to the nearest Local Commercial Office. See addresses and telephone numbers of local pitlose on next page.


A large number of such orders are received about May Ist and October Ist each year. Ample advance notice (thirty days if possible) is therefore requested in order to enable us to make the change with the jesat possible interruption to your service.


TERMINATION OF CONTRACTS


¿Contracts covering service or facilities (other than those providing for season service), which have been in force one month may be terminated without cost by giving ten (10) days' notice in writing.


SUSPENSION OF RESIDENCE SERVICE


When a residence Is to be closed for any consid- erable period, the telephone servios may be tem- porarily suspended without termination of contract or removal of telephone Instruments, and under certain conditions, If arranged for in advance, a partial allow- ance will be made for & period not exceeding four months in any contract year; the allowance for suspended service on party lines will be made for only one (1) period of four months or less in any contract year. Bills will be rendered regularly while service is suspended, and the total allowance credited to subscriber when service is resumed. This sus- pended service does not apply to business telephones. It applies to residence telephones, and is offered as & convenience when water, electricity, gas, etc., are also being shut off, and the residence left without a caretaker. If & caretaker or watchman is employed, or the premises even casually visited by persons acting for the owner, it is recommended that tele- phone service be maintained, as the telephone ia a very valuable aid in case of fire or accident.


BILLS FOR TELEPHONE SERVICE


Bills for local service will be rendered monthly in advance in accordance with the terms of the con- tract. Charges for suburban and long distance mes- sages (toll messagea) will appear on the same bill, the charges covering a period of one month: but in order to render bills on the first of the month the period will begin and end several days before the end of the calendar month.


DIRECTORY LISTINGS FOR NON-SUBSCRIBERS


Residents of hotels or apartment houses who are not subscribers to telephone service may, with the consent of the wobecriber, have their names listed in the telephone directory in connection with the telephone number of the hotel or apartment house in which they reside when the service furnished is on measured basis. A moderate charge is made for such listings.


IDENTIFICATION OF EMPLOYES


Every employs of the Telephone Company author- ized to inspect, repair or remove the Company's ap- paratus carries & metal badge showing the Com- pany's name and his own number. Subscribers are earnestly requested to refuse access to their prem- ises to anyone who cannot in this way identity himself.


ATTACHMENTS TO TELEPHONES


Telephone instrumenta have been designed to pro- duos the best results and are, necessarily, very sensitive and intricate. The various unauthorised devtoen offered for sale and which are supposed to Improve transmission, eliminate noise, destroy forms, supplant the telephone directory, etc., are Unnecessary. Many of them get the telephone lines and instruments out of order and the Company. to protect its service, is compelled to remove them.


Bubecribers' contracts provide that no instrument or appliance not furnished by the Company shall be attached to or used in connection with its Instru- ments or lines.


INJURING TELEPHONE PROPERTY


"Any person who wilfully or'maliciousty displaces, removes, injures, or destroys & Une of telegraph or telephone, wire or cable, vier or abutment, or the material or property belonging thereto, without law- ful authority, or who shall unlawfully and wilfully cut, break, tap, or make connection with any tele- graph or telephone line, wire, cable or Instrument, or read or copy in any unauthorized manner any message, communication or report passing over it, in this state; or who shall wilfully prevent, obstruct of delay by any means or contrivance whatsoever, the sending, transmission, conveyance or delivery. is this state, of any authorized message, communi- cation or report by or through any telegraph or tele- phone line, wire or cable, under the control of any telegraph or telephone company doing business in this state; or who shall aid, agree with, employ or conspire with any person or persons to unlawfully do, or permit or cause to be done, any of the acta hereinbefore mentioned, or who shall occupy, une a line, or shall knowingly permit another to occupy, use a line, a room, table, establishment or apparatus te unlawfully do or cause to be done any of the acta hereinbefore mentioned, is punishable by imprison- ment for not more than two years."-Extract from Section 1423 of the Penal Law.


PRIVACY OF TELEPHONE SERVICE


"A person who wrongfully obtains or attempts to obtain any knowledge of a telegraphic or telephonlo message by connivance with a clerk, operator, mes- senger or other employe of a telegraph or telephone company, or . . . being such clerk, operator, mes- senger or other employe, wilfully divulges to anyone but the persons for whom it was intended the con- tenta or the nature thereof of a telegraphic or tele- phonic message or despatch intrusted to him for the transmission or delivery, or of which contents he may in any manner become possessed, . . . is punishable by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars, or by Imprisonment for not more than two years, or by both such fine and Imprisonment."

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS TO PUBLIC TELEPHONE AGENTS


REQUEST TO SEND A MESSENGER


Public Telephone Agents, on a request from the Toll Operator to send for any person, should endeavor Lo secure messenger service at as low & figure as possible, and In all cases should notify the Toll Op- arator of the charge, and receive her approval of the amount before sending the messenger.


The Public Telephone Agent should transmit the messenger's report to the Toll Operator as soon as the messenger returns.


PAYMENT FOR MESSENGER SERVICE


The Toll Operator will write a credit altp, covering the amount paid for messenger charges. which amount will be paid to the agent by a collector where the public telephone is equipped with a coin box, otherwise the amount will be credited to the agent's account

OVERTIME CHARGES ON LOCAL MESSAGES


In accordance with contract and tarift provisions & "local message" is a connection on a local call five minutes or less in duration, Although it is not the Company's general practice to time all local messages as it is to time all toll messages, overtime charges will be applied whenever local messages from public telephone or subscribers' message rate stations are found to materially exceed five minutes in duration. Public telephone agents and hotel and apartment house private branch exchange subscribers who handle the telephone service of their patrons should, therefore, make one local charge for each looti con- nection period of five minutes or leme.


PASSES


Passes lasned by the New York Telephone Com- pany are good only for. messages sent over the lines of that Company, within the Division indicated on the


Passes issued by other Local Companies are good only for messages sent over the lines of the com- panies by whom issued or countersigned.


Passes issued by the American Telephone & Tele- graph Company (Long Distance) will be accepted in payment of tolls to points reached via the lines of that Company. These passes are not good for local or suburban Toll charges or for messenger service.


TELEPHONE DIRECTORY BINDERS


No telephone directory furnished by the Company for use at public stations shall be enclosed in card- board or other binders which bear advertisements er printed matter not approved by the Company.
