Upon the recommendation of the brigade commander, General Doyle, the Governor of the state appointed on April 29, 1898, Brigadier-General Edward M. Hoffman, inspector-general of the state, colonel, and Brigadier-General William M. Kirby, general inspector of rifle practice of the state, lieutenant-colonel of the regiment.
Pursuant to special orders, Nos. 70 and 72, adjutant-general's office, dated, April 30th, and May 1st, the several companies com- posing the regiment left their home stations as follows:
By the Erie railroad, under charge of General Hoffman, May 1st, forty-second separate company, 4:00 p. m .; twenty-fifth sepa- rate company, 4:20 p. m .; forty-third separate company, 5:20 p. m .; forty-seventh separate company, 7:10 p. m., and the thirtieth sepa- rate company, 9:30 p. m. By the New York Central & Hudson River railroad, under charge of General William M. Kirby, on the same date, twenty-ninth separate company, 5:30 p. m .; the first and eighth separate companies, 7:00 p. m .; thirty-fourth separate company, 7:30 p. m .; second separate company and forty-eighth separate company, 8:00 p. m., and the forty-first separate com- pany, at 9:20 p. m.
The detachment transported by the New York Central & Hud- son River railroad arrived at Camp Black, Hempstead Plains, Long Island, at 9 o'clock a. m., May 2d, and proceeded to make camp, its location being the second from the left of the line of Camp Black. The detachment which was transported by the Erie railroad arrived at Camp Black at 3 p. m., on the same day.
Captain William Wilson and Captain Mighells B. Butler were nominated as majors of the regiment. Lieutenant-Colonel Kirby and Captains Wilson and Butler were assigned to command the first, second and third battalions, respectively. May 2d, Captain Stephen F. Hart, adjutant twenty-second regiment and Major A. W. La Rose, assistant in the inspector-general's department, were detailed for temporary duty with the regiment as adjutant and quartermaster, respectively. Captain Hart was relieved and returned to his regiment, May 11th, and Major La. Rose was mustered in as first lieutenant and quartermaster, May 14th.
The medical examination of the officers and men commenced on May 10th, and developed the fact that about five percentum

of the men could not be accepted, and other men were sent from their home stations to replace them. The medical examinations were conducted by Major William M. Bemus and Lieutenants Alfred F. Hodgman and Reeve B. Howland, who had previously passed their examinations and had been mustered in as surgeon and assistant surgeons, United States volunteers.
The regiment was mustered into the service of the United States and became, in accordance with general orders, No. 11, adjutant-general's office, state of New York, series 1898, the " third regiment infantry, New York volunteers," May 17, 1898.
Colonel Albert G. Myer, aide-de-camp to Governor Black, was mustered in with the regiment as first lieutenant and adjutant. Captain A. M. Hall was promoted to major, May 20th, and assigned to the command of Lieut-Col. Kirby's battalion, the num- bers of the battalions being changed so that Majors Wilson, Butler and Hall commanded the first, second and third battalions, respectively.
In pursuance of orders from the war department, the regiment left Camp Black, May 28th, and proceeded to Camp Alger, near Dunn Loring, Virginia, over the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, arriving at Dunn Loring at S a. m., May 29th, and marched about three miles to its camp, being assigned to the first brigade, second division, second army corps.
Pursuant to orders from the war department, the regiment was recruited to the maximum strength; recruiting parties being sent to the home stations for that purpose, and by the middle of June 303 recruits had joined.
The colors of the regiment were presented by the Sons of the Revolution on June 7th. The regiment received them with the ceremony of " escort to the colors."
On June 22d, the regiment, with the 159th Indiana volunteers, went on a practice march and out-post duty, carrying packs, blankets and shelter tents, to the Allen farm, on Difficult Run, about eleven miles from Camp Alger, and were absent three days.
June 29th, Adjutant Myer was promoted to major of the 202d regiment, and Battalion Adjutant J. A. Quigley was promoted to succeed him. July 5th, Lieutenant-Colonel William M. Kirby was detailed as provost marshal general of the second army corps.

July 25th, Major A. M. Hall's battalion was detailed as one of the three battalions composing the provost guard of the corps; company L being stationed at Aqueduct Bridge, Va., com- pany I at Falls Church, Va., and companies D and K doing duty in and about the camp. The battalion remained on this duty until August 12th. On being relieved the corps commander, Major-General W. S. Graham, officially complimented the major and his battalion on their conduct and the manner in which they performed their duty. This battalion remained at Camp Alger until August 17th, when it proceeded by rail to Camp Meade, Middletown, Pa.
August 3d, at 10 o'clock a. m., the regiment (Majors Wilson and. Butler's battalions) marched with the second division, second army corps, carrying packs, blankets, ponchos and shelter tents in the direction of Manassas, reaching Burk's Station at 5 o'clock p. m., that day. When the division moved there was transporta- tion for only one brigade, and is was twelve hours before the wagons of the regiment left Camp Alger.
The regiment took up the march on the 5th, at 6:45 a. m., and proceeded via the Manassas road and Sangster's Cross Roads to Bull Run, near Clifton, Va., which point they reached at 12:50 p. m. At 5:50 a. m., August 7th, they marched to a point near Bristow on the banks of Broad Run via Manassas, reaching Broad Run at 10:55 a. m. At S o'clock a. m., August 9th, the march was taken up via Gainesville and Haymarket to Thorough- fare Gap, Va., arriving at the latter place at 4:20 p. m. The regi- ment remained in camp, changing camp ground once while there, until August 28th, when it proceeded via train to Camp Meade; Wilson's battalion reaching camp at 6 p. m., of that day, and Butler's battalion at 8:30 a. m., August 30th.
The regiment was on provost duty nearly all the time after leav- ing Camp Alger until it reached Camp Meade, and was the last regiment of the division to leave Thoroughfare Gap.
On September 3d, orders were received to prepare the regi- ment for muster-out of the United States service. Camp equip- age was turned in, and the regiment departed from Camp Meade, September 12th, at 7 o'clock p. m., via the Pennsylvania rail- road, arriving in Elmira, N. Y. at 6 o'clock a. m., the next day, when the regiment disembarked and paraded for the last time,

after which company L was dismissed and reported to its armory; the other companies returned to the cars and proceeded to their home stations and armories to prepare for muster-out. Upon arrival at their home stations the enlisted men of the several companies were, by orders received from the adjutant-general, United States army, given verbal furloughs for thirty days, except the necessary guards and clerks.
The companies were mustered out of the United States service by Captain E. R. Hills, fifth artillery, United States army, on the following dates, all, to date November 30, 1898.
