Special orders, No. 72, A. G. O., May 1, 1898, ordered the regi- ment to report at the foot of Twenty-second street, North river, New York city, at noon of the 2d of May, there to embark for the Camp of Instruction, near Peekskill, and on arrival at the camp to report to Brigadier-General Peter C. Doyle, national guard, commanding the camp. The order was duly carried out.


Under the provisions of general orders, No. 11, A. G. O., Albany, May 3, 1898, the regiment was at this camp fully organ- ized as a twelve-company regiment, and mustered in the service of the United States; companies A, B, C and D, May 14, com- panies E, F, G and H, May 17, and companies I, K, L and M, May 19, 1898. and became the " eighth regiment, infantry, New York volunteers."


The regiment left Camp Townsend (Camp of Instruction, here- tofore), May 23, 1898, under telegraphic orders from the war department, embarking for New York city on the steamer " Glen Island," and arriving at Jersey City, N. J., at 2.30 p. m. It left the Pennsylvania railroad depot en-route for Chickamauga Park, Ga., at 6 p. m., May 23d, and arrived at Camp George II. Thomas, Chickamauga Park, Ga., at 3 p. m., May 25th, where it was assigned to the third brigade, first division, third army corps, on the same date and pitched its camp.

While there the regiment performed the usual duties in camp and also outpost and picket duty, and received in June and July three hundred and thirty-seven recruits.


The regiment left Camp Thomas, September 6th, at 4:30 p. m., under orders from the war department, and proceeded via Penn- sylvania railroad to Jersey City, N. J., where it arrived in four sections, between 7 p. m., September Sth, and 2 a. m., September 9th, and marched to its armory in New York city. The regiment was granted thirty days' furlough from October 1st, and was mustered out of the United States service at the armory, Novem- ber 3, 1898, by Captain William Lassiter, Sixteenth United States infantry.
