EIGHTH REGIMENT, INFANTRY.
The eighth regiment, national guard, having volunteered its services, was one of the regiments selected in general orders, No. S, general headquarters, state of New York, dated adjutant- general's office, Albany, April 27, 1898, to enter the service of the United States as a volunteer regiment.
The regiment at that time consisted of eight companies, and at once commenced recruiting to fill its companies and to organize four additional ones.
Its history up to that date follows:
EIGHTH REGIMENT. (Fifth Brigade.)
Armory, Park avenue and Ninety-fourth street, New York city.
On the 4th of April, 1786, the first brigade, first division, was formed in New York city into a brigade of artillery, and was to consist of the first and second regiments, and a battalion. In April, 1807, the third regiment of New York artillery was organ- ized of this battalion and other troops. July 27, 1847, the desig- nation of the regiment was changed to the eighth regiment. In December, 1893, it was reduced to a battalion of four companies. It was re-organized as a regiment, February 14, 1896. New com- panies were organized for the battalion as follows: On July S. 1895, company .1; on October 30, 1895, company E; on January 27, 1896, company HI, and on February 14, 1896, company G, when it was re-organized as a regiment. April 28, 1898, it was author- ized to be organized as a twelve-company regiment to enter the service of the United States. The regiment performed service for the state at the flour riot in 1826; at the stonecutters' riot in 1835; at the great fire in New York city, July 19, 1845; at the Astor Place riot, May 10, 1849; at the police riot, June 16, 1857: at the dead rabbit riot, July 5, 1857; at the quarantine war or Sepoy riots, September 11 to 29, 1858; at the camp of the Cor- coran Legion, preserving order, October 1S to 23, 1862; at the

draft riots, July, 1863; at the Orange riot, July 12, 1871; at the railroad riots, July 25 and 29, 1877, and at Brooklyn during the motormen's strike, January, 1895. It was in the service of the United States from September 15, to December 15, 1812; from April 23, to August 2, 1861; from May 29, to September 9, 1862, and from June 17, to July 23, 1863.
The regiment received authority to place silver rings on the lances of its colors, engraved as follows:
