ZENDER, AUSTIN R .- Age, 19 years. Enlisted, May 2, 1598, at Brooklyn, to serve two years; mustered in as private, Co. M, May 24, 1898; mustered out with company, November 23, 1808, at Fort Slocum, New York Harbor.


FORTY-SEVENTH REGIMENT, INFANTRY.


The forty-seventh regiment, national guard, having volunteered its services, was selected in general orders, No. 8, A. G. O., S. N. Y., to enter the service of the United States as a volunteer regiment.


The regiment at that time consisted of eight companies, and at once commenced to fill up its companies and organize four addi- tional ones.


Its history to that date follows:


FORTY-SEVENTH REGIMENT. (Second Brigade.)


State Armory, Marcy avenue and Heyward street, Brooklyn.


Companies A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H and I were organized in 1862, and company K in 1872. Company C was disbanded in 1878, and companies G and H in 1863. A new company G was organ- ized in 1864, and a new company H in 1878; the latter was dis- banded in 1SS5. The regiment entered the United States service for three months, May 27, 1862, and was mustered out, September 1, 1862. It was re-mustered into service, June 17, 1863, and mus- tered out, July 23, 1863, by reason of expiration of term of service. It served the state during the draft riots, July, 1863; railroad riots, July, 1877; the quarantine disturbances at Fire Island, Sep- tember, 1892, and the motormen's strike, January, 1895.


The regiment received authority to place silver rings on the lances of its colors, engraved as follows:


On the national color .- Fort McHenry, Md., 1862; Washington, D. C., 1863.


On the state color .- Draft riots, 1863; Railroad strike, 1877; Fire Island, 1892; Brooklyn, 1895.


In compliance with special orders, No. 73, A. G. O., May 1, 1898, the regiment reported at the Flatbush avenue station of the Long

NEW YORK IN SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR.


Island railroad, Brooklyn, at 10 a. m., May 3d, and embarked for Camp Black, near Hempstead, L. I., reporting on arrival to Major-General Charles F. Roe, commanding the national guard.


The four additional companies, having completed their organi- zation, reported at Camp Black, May 11th. Recruiting was con- tinued to fill up and replace the men rejected by the medical officers, and the regiment was fully organized with twelve com- panies, under the provision of general orders, No. 11, A. G. O., May 3, 1898.


It was mustered into the service of the United States as the " forty-seventh infantry, New York volunteers," May 24, 1898.


Pursuant to special orders, No. 122, department of the east, dated June 6, 1898, Lieutenant-Colonel Hubbell and Major Barth- man, with companies A, B, D, E, F, G, I and K, left Camp Black, June 9th, at 9.45 a. m., via Long Island railroad and Ston- ington line; arrived at Newport, R. I., June 10th.


Lieutenant-Colonel Hubbell and Major Barthman, with com- panies B, D, F, G, I and K, proceeded to Fort Adams, R. I., and companies A and E, under command of Captain D. C. Sullivan, to Fort Greble, R. I. They arrived at their respective stations about 10 a. m., the same day.


That part of special orders, No. 122, relating to headquarters and companies C, H, L and M reporting at Quanset, R. I., was countermanded.


Special orders, No. 127, department of the east, dated June 11, 1898, directed Colonel Hubbell and Majors Quick and Lyon, with companies C, H, L and M, to report at Fort Adams, R. I., where they arrived on the morning of June 15th.


Companies A and E were by special orders No. 15S, department of the east, transferred from Fort Greble to Fort Adams, R. I., where they arrived, July 21st.


The regiment remained in camp at Fort Adams until October 9th, when, pursuant to special orders, No. 159, headquarters of the army, Washington, D. C., it embarked on transport " Manitoba " and sailed the next day at 4 p. m., for Porto Rico. The vessel arrived in the harbor of Ponce, October 15th, and the regiment
