TWENTY-SECOND REGIMENT, INFANTRY.


The twenty-second regiment, national guard, having volun- teered its services, was May 7, 1898, in special orders, No. 81, A. G. O., ordered to be organized into eight companies; to pro- ceed from New York city to Camp Black, and there receive the battalion of the thirteenth regiment, four companies, as part of its organization into a twelve-company regiment.


The regiment arrived at the camp, May 9th, and the above orders were carried out and recruiting continued to replace the men rejected by the medical officers. Its prior history follows:


TWENTY-SECOND REGIMENT.


(First Brigade.)


Armory, Broadway and Sixty-seventh street, New York city.


This regiment was organized in . April, 1861. It entered the United States service, May 28, 1862, for three months, and was mustered out. September 5, 1862, having been stationed at Wash- ington, D. C., and later forming part of the garrison at Harper's Ferry, Va. June 18, 1863, it was again mustered in the service of the United States for thirty days, and was mustered out, July 24, 1863, having, during the service, taken part in the Gettysburg campaign. In 1867 the regiment took up rifle practice as part of its drill, and in 1871 it established for itself a rifle range and system of practice, which was in 1873, adopted by the National Rifle Association. Company G was disbanded, March 22, 1878, and new company G organized, April 30, 1879. Company F was disbanded, October 10, 1890, and new company F organized, Janu- ary 8, 1891. Company I was disbanded, October 10, 1890, and new company I organized, October 6, 1892,


The regiment received authority to place silver rings on the lances of its colors, engraved as follows:


On the national color .- Harper's Ferry, 1862; Gettysburg cam- paign, 1863; Sporting Hill, Pa., June 30, 1863; Carlilse, Pa., July 1, 1863.

TWENTY-SECOND REGIMENT, INFANTRY.


On the state color .- Draft. riots, 1863; Orange riot, 1871; Buf- falo, 1892; Brooklyn, 1895.


The regiment was mustered in the service of the United States as the " twenty-second regiment, infantry, New York volunteers," May 24, 1898, and remained at Camp Black until June 10, 1898.


In compliance with special orders, No. 122, department of the east, of June 6, 1898, the regiment left Camp Black at noon, June 10th, and proceeded by way of the Long Island railroad to Long Island City. From that place the steamer "John G. Carlisle " transported companies D, F, L and M, under the command of Major Russell, and company G, commanded by Captain Dayton, assigned to duty at the Engineer Depot, to their new station, Willet's Point, where they arrived at 7 p. m., and companies A, C, H and K, under command of Major Hotchkin, to their new station at Fort Schuyler, where they arrived at 10 p. m. Regi mental headquarters and companies B, E and I went by steamer " General Meigs," to their station, Fort Slocum, arriving there about 10 p. m.
