FORTY-SEVENTH REGIMENT, INFANTRY.
disembarked, October 18th, proceeding to camp, four and a half miles north of Ponce. The regiment remained there until the afternoon of October 22d, when by order of Brigadier-General Guy V. Henry it broke camp and marched to Ponce, where it em- barked on the transport "Chester " and sailed October 23d, for San Juan, leaving on the route detachments at the several assigned stations and relieving at the same time detachments of the fourth infantry, Ohio volunteers.
Arroyo was reached, October 24th, where companies E and K disembarked, to march to Guayama. October 25th, company A was left at Humaco; October 26th, company D at the Isla de Vieques, and October 27th, company F at Fajardo, where it was to take station.
The rest of the regiment then proceeded to San Juan, arriving in the afternoon of the same day. Companies B and G imme- diately disembarked and proceeded by railroad to the stations assigned them; company B to Rio Piedras and company G to Carolina. The other companies, C, HI, I, L and M, disembarked October 28th, and went into camp in front of Fort San Cristobal.
The regiment broke camp, October 29th, and marched to Caguas, twenty-four miles, arriving on October 30th, where com- panies C, L and M took station. After resting over night, com- panies H and I took up the march, the former to Cayey, forty-two miles, arriving November 1st, and the latter to Aibonito, fifty- four miles, arriving November 2d. Headquarters were estab- lished at Caguas.
It was necessary while at these stations to send out patrols through the surrounding country. The condition of the roads and the distances to be patrolled were such that they were obliged to go out mounted. Native horses were principally used for this purpose. Details were also made of two or more men to remain on plantations where they were well treated by the owners.
The duties performed were of both a military and civil char- acter. The officers earned the highest commendation from both the department and district commanders, as shown by letters of which the following are copies:

NEW YORK IN SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR.
HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENT OF PORTO RICO,
SAN JUAN, March 3, 1899.
The Commanding Officer, Forty-Seventh New York Volunteers.
Sir :- I am directed by the major-general commanding the department of Porto Rico to communicate to you, and through you to your regiment, his appreciation of your work while on duty in this department. The orders subordinating the military to the civil authorities were carried out faithfully, although at times the state of affairs was trying and required the exercise of judicious self-control.
The only unfortunate incident that occurred was the murder of a soldier by a civilian at Caguas, which was merely a personal affair, and one that should not reflect upon the regiment, as it was the fault of the citizen that committed the crime.
Very respectfully,
(Signed) PETER E. TRANT, First Lieut., First Cav., A. D. C.
HEADQUARTERS DISTRICT OF SAN JUAN,
SAN JUAN, P. R., March 1, 1899. MY DEAR COLONEL HUBBELL:
As I am about to start to attend to some military duties, which takes me to the western part of the island of Porto Rico, it is not probable that I shall see you again before you and your regiment embark on the "Manitoba " to return to the United States, I therefore write to express to you my great appreciation of the faithful and efficient services of the officers and men of the forty- seventh New York infantry volunteers, which they have performed while under my command in the district of San Juan.
You and your regiment have not had the interesting excitement of an active campaign against an armed enemy, but you have sus- tained all the hardships and dangers of one.
The officers and enlisted men of the forty-seventh New York volunteers have performed their duties finely, while in the island of Porto Rico, and in returning to the United States they deserve the commendations and thanks of all their countrymen. They

certainly have my sincere thanks, and I have greatly enjoyed hav- ing them associated with me here.
With warmest regards for yourself and all the officers of your regiment, believe me, my dear Colonel Hubbell,
Sincerely yours, (Signed.) F. D. GRANT, Brig .- Gen'l Comd'g.
On January 27, 1899, the following telegram was received at headquarters at Caguas.
COMMANDING OFFICER :
Sir :- The brigadier-general commanding the military district of San Juan directs me to inform you that information has been received from the war department that transportation will be here between the 5th and 15th of February to take your regiment to the United States. He directs that you have your command in readiness to move.
Very respectfully, (Signed.) C. W. FENTON, Assistant Adjt .- Gen'l.
Orders were issued to comply with this order without delay when the following telegram was received:
February 17.
COLONEL HUBBELL:
Cable just received from quartermaster-general, Washington. D. C., indicates " Manitoba " will not be here for two weeks yet to take your regiment north.
(Signed.) COL. PULLMAN.
February 21st, company D was transferred from Isla de Vieques to San Juan and quartered there at the eleventh United States infantry barracks.
The transport " Manitoba " arrived February 27th, and the regi- ment, except companies E, H, I and K, was ordered to report at San Juan, March 3d.

NEW YORK IN SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR.
March 2d, headquarters with companies C, L, M and H left on the march from Caguas at 3.30 p. m., for Rio Piedras, where they arrived at 10 p. m., and remained at the railroad station until the following morning when they took train for San Juan, as did also company B, from Rio Piedras, and company G, from Carolina.
Companies B, C, D, G, L and M embarked, March 3d, on trans- port which then cast off and anchored in midstream to await the arrival of the steamer "Vaseo," conveying company F, from Fajardo, and company A, from Humacoa. At 5 p. m., the trans- port sailed for Arroyo to take up the remaining four companies, company I having marched from Aibonito to Guayama, and com- pany H from Cayey, where they joined companies E and K, and under the command of Major Sullivan marched to Arroyo, where they arrived about 10 a. m., March 4th. The troops having all embarked, the transport sailed for New York at 6 p. m.
The dock at the foot of Pacific street, Brooklyn, was reached March 10th, at 9 a. m., and the regiment disembarked at 1 p. m .. and marched to the armory of the forty-seventh regiment, national guard. A royal reception was given the regiment by the citizens during the march through the city, the escort being fur- nished by the fourth battalion of the forty-seventh regiment, national guard, troop C, and the grand army posts.
During the service the health of the regiment was very good. This can be accounted for by the fact that the officers took proper care of their men, and the medical officers looked well after the sanitary conditions.
The regiment assembled, March 31, 1899, and was mustered out of the United States service.
