Schamel, Michael, Hamburg, p. o. Big Tree, was born in Bavaria, Germany, August 3, 1854, and came to America with his mother when he was eleven years old, locating in the town of East Hamburg. April 15, 1879, he married Louise Knab. Mr. Schamel's father, John, was born in Alsace, France (now Germany), in 1826 and came to America with his parents when seven years old. He married Catherine Sauermilk, and they had six children of whom but two survive, Mary and Louise (as above), Mr. Knab died December 19, 1892. Mrs. Schamel was born October 1, 1852.


Wheeler, Charles A., Hamburg, p. o. Lakevview, was born in Fitchburg, Mass., February 14, 1861. He is a graduate of the High School and took a mechanical course in Stevens Institute of Technology at Hoboken, N. Y. He was apprenticed as a tool maker with the Putnam Tool Company and has followed the business with some of the best firms of the country. He was assistant superintendent with Edi- son's Phonograph Company three years; was two years with the American Grapho- phone Company as experimenter in their experimental laboratory at Washington, D. C .; was associated with the Columbia Typewriter Company one year; also with the Western Electric Company of New York city one year, and with the Garwin Ma- chine Company of New York city one year as foreman of the tool department. He was assistant superintendent of the Union Twist Drill Company of Boston, Mass., nearly three years, and was associated with the Clark Machine Company of Turner's Falls, Mass., as superintendent two years, and as traveling salesman for two years. In March, 1895, he entered the employ of the Queen City Bicycle Company of Buf- falo, N. Y., was foreman of the tool department until they removed to their new fac- tory at Idlewood in the western part of Hamburg, N. Y., and in August of the same year, became assistant superintendent and foreman. In May, 1896, he was promoted to general superintendent. November 11, 1895, he married Bessie B. Harell of Pat- erson, N. J. He is a member of Mechanics' Lodge, Turner's Falls, Mass., F. & A. M., and in political choice is a Republican.


Stillwell, Mrs. Almira, Hamburg, p. o. Lakeview .- The late Amos F. Stilwell was born in Vermont in 1820, and came with his parents to this State when a boy, where he learned the carpenter and joiner's trade. January 6, 1846, he married Almira Amsdell, and they had two daughters, Ella E. and Josephine L. Mr. Stillwell died January 16, 1864. Mrs. Stilwell's father, Abner Amsdell, was born in Deerfield, Mass., in 1794. July 4, 1818, he married Nancy Steward, and they had five children : Dexter, Almira, Francis, Arbella and Nelson. Mr. Amsdell was a soldier in the war of 1812, under General Porter, in Captain Knott's Company, as ensign. He died in 1891, and his wife in 1874.


Bandley, John F., Hamburg, p. o. Lakeview, was born in the town of Eden, De- cember 25, 1862, and was educated in the common schools. His early life was de-

voted to farming, but the past seven years he has been a hotel keeper, with liv- ery attached, at Lakeview. March 8, 1888, he married Lillie A. Roeller, of his native town, and they have two sons, Clayton F. and Floyd G. Mr. Bandley's father, Frederick L., was born in Wurtemberg, Germany, October 7, 1835, and came to America when eighteen year old, locating in the town of Eden. He mar- ried Mary A. Pryer and they had eleven children, ten of whom are living at this date (1897), as follows: John F. (as above), Mary A., Carrie R., Frederick F., William W., Louis F., Hannah R., Edward, Albert and Charles.


Cole, George B., Hamburg, p. o. Lakeview, was born in the State of Maryland, October 4, 1849, and came to New York State in 1875, where he entered the employ of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway, first as a clerk at Angola. He was shortly sent to Morehead, Pa., and soon after came to Lakeview, where he has had continuous service as station master. In 1883 he married Etta Parmenter of Buffalo, N. Y., and they have one son, Oliver. Mr. Cole is a member of Fraternity Lodge No. 635, F. & A. M., and of the A. O. U. W., No. 188 Mr. Cole's father, Jonas, was born at the old home in Maryland and married Martha Neville. They had seven children. Mr. Cole died in 1878 and his wife in 1865.


Schmahl, Valentine, Hamburg, p. o. Athol Springs, was born in Buffalo, N. Y., February 24, 1847. November 3, 1861, he enlisted in Co. H, 17th U. S. Infantry, and in 1863 was appointed chief bugler of the regiment; was honorably discharged at Fort Lafayette, New York Harbor, November 3, 1864. May 19, 1870, he married Margaret Bingenhimer, formerly [of Germany, and they have one daughter, Ellen M. Mr. Schmahl's father, Christopher, was born in Germany in 1820; he was married twice; first to Eve Erbes, who died in 1850, and for his second wife he married his first wife's sister, Louise. Christopher Schmahl died in March, 1862, and his widow survives at this date (1896).


Thorn, Perry M., Hamburg, was born at Abbott's Corners (now Armor), Novem- ber 25, 1855. He resided in the town of Eden eight years, the balance of his life in the town of Hamburg, N. Y. He was educated in Hamburg Academy and in Bryant's Business College in Buffalo, N.Y. He studied law with his father, Abram, and was admitted to the bar in June, 1880, and practiced law three years, He was elected justice of the peace in 1877, resigned the office in 1883 and accepted the posi- tion of bookkeeper in the Bank of Hamburg. When the People's Bank was organ- ized in 1891 he became cashier of it, which position he now holds. He has been president of the village of Hamburg several years and holds the office of village treasurer. He is a member of Fraternal Lodge No. 625, F. & A. M., and was elected its master in 1895. January 11, 1877, he married Armida N. Potter of Ar- mor, N. Y., and they have one daughter, Allie Ray. Mr. Thorn's father, Abram, was born in the town of Eden, August 3, 1812, where he was a lawyer and farmer. February 17, 1837, he married Phila M. Pratt of the town of Collins, and they had four living children. His father was Joseph, who settled in East Hamburg in 1809; his grandfather was Abram and his great-grandfather Webster Thorn, who came from England at an early day.


Umpleby, Charles E., Hamburg, was born in that town, January 9, 1862, and was educated in the Hamburg Academy. June 21, 1888, he married Mary A. Flint

of Hamburg, and she died September 13, 1894. He married again in January, 1896, Harriet F. Ames of Ogdensburg, N. Y. Mr. Umpleby is correspondent for several New York and Buffalo newspapers, and a member of Fraternal Lodge No. 635, F. & A. M. His father, Emanuel Umpleby, was born in Leeds, England, March 6, 1824, and came to America with his parents in 1844, locating in Buffalo for a short period, when they moved to Ridge Road, in the town of Hamburg. He married Esther Palmer, and they had one son, Charles E., as above. Mrs. Umpleby's father, Joseph R. Ames, was born in Norway, Me., in 1819, and married Harriet F. Boutell; they had two daughters, Josephine and Harriet F., as above. The Ames family were soldiers in the Revolutionary war.


Zittel, Mrs. Louis, Hamburg, p. o. Buffalo .- Louis Zittel was born of German parents at Johnsonsburg, Wyoming county, N. Y., May 9, 1853. He was educated in the public schools and was by occupation a machinist. February 20, 1889, he married Helen A. Baltzer of Blasdell, town of Hamburg, and they have had two children: Henrietta L., born February 6, 1891, died in infancy, and Philip W., who who was born February 9, 1895. Mrs. Zittel's sister, Henrietta C., married Herman von Gehren of New York city; they have one son, Edmund C. They go to Hesse- Darmstadt, Germany, his former home, to reside this year (1897), Mr. Zittel in his political choice is a Republican. They belong to the Evangelical Lutheran church.


Conover, Daniel S., Hamburg, p. o. Athol Springs, was born in Johnstown, Fulton county, N. Y., March 22, 1834. He came with his parents to Rochester in 1839 and to Buffalo in 1848. March 9, 1854, he married Catherine McCauley of Montreal, Can., and they had five children: Roland J., Hiram J., Daniel S., jr., Elizabeth and Catherine. Mr. Conover enlisted April 10, 1861, in Co. E, 21st N. Y. Vols., and was honorably discharged May 18, 1863. On December 22, 1863, he re-enlisted in Co. D, 24th N. Y. Vol. Cavalry, being discharged July 19, 1865, and in August, 1895 ac- cepted the position of superintendent of Lake Side Cemetery. He is a member of Richardson Post No. 254, G. A. R., Dept. N. Y., and a member of the Union Vet- eran Legion No. 97.


Buchwald, Charles, Hamburg, p. o. Lakeview, was born in Buffalo, N. Y., March 21, 1852. His parents moved to Hamburg, N. Y., the same year, where he was edu- cated in the district schools. He was a section foreman in the employ of the L. S. & M. S. Railroad for twenty-six years, and one year (1883) on the N. Y. C. & St. L. Railway as roadmaster. He resigned his position as section foreman and went to farming. February 15, 1876, he married Sarah S. Leser; they have six children: Herman C., Julia A., Sarah C., Robert W., George L. and Edward J. Mr. Buch- wald's father, Robert H., was born in Saxony, Germany, December 15, 1829, and came to America in 1850, locating in Buffalo, and afterwards moved to Hamburg, where he cleared up land and began farming; he married Dorothy Adams, and they had three sons: Charles, Herman R. and Elmer E. Mrs. Buchwald's father, John Leser, was born in Baden, Germany, February 12, 1827, and came to America in 1851, locating in Evans, N. Y., where he cleared up land and began farming; he married Sarah Lesser of Evans, and they had six children: Mary, John, Sarah, Julia, Joseph and Edward.

April 10, 1845. During early life he worked on his father's farm and this was his occupation until 1869. On April 15 of that year he married Catherine Lamy, by whom he had seven children, of whom three, Julia C., George J. and Flora L., still survive. Mr. Eckhardt came to the village of Hamburg very shortly after his mar- riage and embarked in a grocery and saloon business near the site where his present hotel is located. In 1883 his place of business was entirely destroyed by fire and on the year following the present brick block was erected. He still conducts the hotel under his own name, but is associated in the grocery business with George E. Feder- spiel. Mr. Eckhardt's first wife died November 7, 1888, and April 19, 1892, he mar- ried Louise Hauck of Buffalo. His parents were Germans and came to this country from Alsace, Germany, in the early part of the present century.


Kelderhouse, Samuel, Hamburg, was born in the town of Athens, Greene county, N. Y., August 12, 1827, and came to Buffalo with his parents when four years old. After receiving his education he engaged with his brother John, as dealers in wood, until 1876, and since then has been a farmer in the western part of the town of Ham- burg. October 27, 1859, he married Caroline Van Volkenburg, and they had six children: William C., John, Samuel H., Ida M., George Hawley and Ralph E. William C. married Addie A. Richards; Herbert S. married Edith L. Dascomb; and George H. married Nora B. Fox. Mrs. Kelderhouse died January 11, 1883.


Pierce, George M., Hamburg, was born in that town February 18, 1823, where he was educated in the district schools and for many years followed the occupation of farming. He has for several years resided in the village and has been very active in the promotion of its best interests. He is president of the Bank of Hamburg, also president of the Hamburg Canning Co. and of the Hamburg Planing Mill. He is one of the directors of the Hamburg Water and Electric Light Co. December 30, 1858, he married Harriet E., daughter of Henry W. Dwight of Hartland, Niagara county, and they have four children: S. Louise, Carrie M., Daniel C. and Bessie E. Mr. Pierce's father, Oliver, was a native of Rhode Island and was born in 1791. He married Susan Hammond, formerly of Vermont, and they had seven children.


Kleis, John, Hamburg, p. o. Blasdell, was born in Germany, May 9, 1832, and came to America in 1852, locating on Eighteen-mile Creek. He married twice; first on December 25, 1860, to Catherine Storms, who bore him five children: Florence, Catherine, Herbert, Milford and Thomas. Mrs. Kleis died September 25, 1876. For his second wife he married Mary McGee, and they have three children: John, jr., Frank and William.


Michael Henry, Hamburg, was born in Hessen, Germany, March 19, 1838, and came to America with his parents when twelve years old, locating in Orchard Park, East Hamburg, where he attended school and received an English education. He has had several occupations, harness maker, merchant, farmers' supplies and real estate operator. January 15, 1856, he married Charlotte Moore, and they have four children: Emma F., Amanda C., Ella B. and Clara M. Emma F. married Henry E. White, of Hamburg, N. Y., and they have a daughter, Vera H. ; Amanda C. resides at home: Ella B. married Charles W. Benjamin of Olean, Cattaraugus county, where they reside and have two children, F. Marie and C. Howard; Clara M. married Carlton M. Shaw of the town of Eden and they have a son, Malin M.

November 3, 1863, Mr. Michael enlisted in Co. C, 15th Heavy Artillery, N. Y. Vols., and was honorably discharged July 23, 1865. He is a member of Fraternal Lodge No. 625, F. & A. M., and the N. J. Swift Post No. 440, G. A. R., Dept. of New York; also a member of of the A. O. U. W., No. 88.


Sly, Isaac, Hamburg, was born in the town of Hamburg, N. Y., December 28, 1852. He was educated in the public schools and is a farmer by occupation. October 31, 1876, he married Ellen A. Thompson of Hamburg, and they have three children: Mabel A., Millie E. and Mertie M. Mr. Sly is a member of the I. O. F., No. 1,471. His father, John Sly, was born in Fulton county, N. Y., in 1802. In 1826 he married Philma Titus of his native place, and they had nine children. He died December 26, 1886, and his wife October 10, 1856.


Van Name, John W., Hamburg, was born in Herkimer county, N, Y., August 20, 1819. His parents came to the western part of the town of Hamburg when he was six months old. He was educated in the schools of that day, and was a farmer until he retired in 1871, when he came to the village of Hamburg to reside. Decem- ber 25, 1842, he married Lodema E. Partridge, of Hume, Allegany county, N. Y., and they had nine children; all are dead except Alonzo A. and Kate L. Mrs. Van Name died June 13, 1895, mourned by a bereaved husband and children. Mr. Van Name's father, Aaron, was born in Dutchess county, N. Y., in April, 1791. He moved to Herkimer county when a young man and married Margaret Shawl; they had three children. He was a soldier in the war of 1812 and died in 1867; his wife in 1841.


Bastian, Daniel C., Hamburg, was born in the town of Boston, Erie county, N. Y., December 3, 1845. He has been a farmer, and is now a dealer in real estate. December 10, 1885, he married Rosavel Willet of his native town, and they have two children, Clarence L. and Alburn W. Mr. Bastian's father, Jacob, was born in Alsace, France (now Germany), in 1821, and at the age of eleven he came to the United States with his parents, locating in North Boston; he was a farmer and preacher in the German Evangelical church ; he married Catharine Youtz of the town of Boston, and they had nine children, two died in infancy ; the others are as follows: Harry, Daniel C. (as above), Catharine, Lydia (who died in 1894), Sarah, Emma and William (died in 1879). Mr. Bastian died September 30, 1896, and his widow sur- vives him at this date. Mrs. Bastian's father, Christan Willet, was born in the town of Boston, Erie county, N. Y., in 1816. He married Catharine Lieb, and they had thirteen children.


Cook, Mrs. Mary A., Hamburg, p. o. Lakeview .- Mrs. Cook's father, John Barker, was born in Herkimer county, N. Y., in 1822, and came to Rochester when a young man. He was engaged as roadmaster for the N. Y. C. Railroad Co., from Rochester to Niagara Falls, until his last sickness. In 1846 he married Urania Allison, and they had one daughter: Mary A. (as above). Mr. Barker died in 1879. Mary A. Barker married Fred W. Cook, and they had three children: Charles S., W. Lester and Marion S. Mr. Cook was killed in a railway accident at Angola, in 1867, and his widow survives at this date.


Cole, Herman B., M. D., Hamburg, was born in the town of East Hamburg, N.

Y., September 6, 1872, and was graduated from the Hamburg Academy in 1890. He began the study of medicine in the medical department of the University of Buffalo, and was graduated May 5, 1896, and has since practiced in Hamburg with increasing success. December 8, 1896, he married Ellen M., only daughter of James and Mar- garet McCue, of Buffalo, N. Y. Dr. Cole's father, Nelson W., was born in the town of East Hamburg in 1837, where he carried on farming. He married Josephine V. Blackmar, and they had two children: Effie A., who died November 9, 1890, and Herman B. (as above). Dr. Cole is a member of Triumph Lodge No. 712, I. O. O. F., also of Tent No. 20, K. O. T. M., and holds the office of tent physician.


Funke, Henry A., sr., Hamburg, p. o. Blasdell, was born in Belsdorf, Germany, December 24, 1846, and came to America when he was twenty-six years old, locating in the town of Boston, Erie county, N. Y. March 26, 1874, he married Johanna Krone, and they had eleven children: Henry A., jr., Ida M., Annie, Minnie, Jennie, Rose, Lillie, Clara, William, Lizzie and May. Mr. Funke's father, Christopher, was born in Germany in 1790, and died in 1865.


Glasser, Conrad, Hamburg, p. o. Water Valley, was born in Buffalo, N. Y., March 3, 1844. His parents moved to Eden when he was a child, where he was educated in the district schools and was a farmer by occupation. August 28, 1862, he enlisted in Co. K, 116th N. Y. Vols., and was honorably discharged June 8, 1865, taking part in all the battles with his company. He was married twice, first in 1867 to Elizabeth Schweibert, and they had three children, two of whom survive: Alfred C. and Ella E. Mrs. Glasser died in 1890, and for his second wife he married Katherine Phil- lippi in 1892. Mr. Glasser is a member of James Ayers Post of Angola, N. Y., No. 202, G. A. R., Dept. New York. Mrs. Glasser's grandfather, John Phillippi, was a soldier with Napoleon in the celebrated retreat from Moscow.


Hammond, Walter B., Hamburg, was born at Water Valley, July 9, 1866. His parents moved to Buffalo, N. Y., where he was educated in the public schools. He has been a railway man several years, and is now collector and bookkeeper for the Lehigh Valley Railway Company. October 18, 1890, he married Elizabeth F. Kim- ble, and they have three sons: Courtney K., Earl W. and Ralph S. Mr. Hammond is a member of Fraternal Lodge No. 625, F. & A. M., also the Royal Arcanum, and Business Men's Association. His father, Joseph K. Hammond, was born in the town of Eden, Erie county, February 28, 1842. His early life was spent on a farm, and later he was in the employ of the Lake Shore Railway Company, as a conductor. He married Helen M. Walter, and they had two children: Walter B. and Maud L. Mrs. Hammond died January 15, 1893.


Henn, Frederick, Hamburg, was born in Bavaria, Germany, October 10, 1843. He was educated in their schools until his tenth year, when he came to America with his parents, locating in Buffalo. August 18, 1862, he enlisted in Co. D, 116th N. Y. Vols., and with the exception of sickness, served with his regiment in all their battles. He was married twice, first in 1866 to Annie Getz of Rochester, N. Y., and they had seven children: William C., Frederick, jr., Annie, Carry, Frank, Otto and Louis L .; Otto and Carry are dead. Mrs. Henn died in 1882, and for his second wife he married Mrs. Mary A. Hoyt. Mr. Henn is a member of N. J. Swift Post No. 440, G. A. R., Department of New York; he is past commander and is now its

chaplain. He is a member of the A. O. U. W., Fraternal Lodge No. 625, F. & A. M., of Aaron Chapter No. 307, R. A. M., and Rose Croix Commandery No. 38, K. T


Paxson, Dr. Horace A., Hamburg, was born in the town of Eden, Erie county, N. Y., January 29, 1838, and educated in the public schools. He studied dentistry with C. W. Morse, M. D., and began business on his own account in 1865. August 28, 1862, he enlisted in Co. K, 116th N. Y. Vols., and was honorably discharged July 5, 1865. August 31, 1865, he married Mary A. Kester of his native town, and they have one daughter, Gracia A., who is a student in Hamburg Academy. Dr. Paxson has practiced his profession in several places successfully and came to Hamburg, November 19, 1887. He is a member of the N. J. Swift Post No. 440, G. A. R., De- partment of New York. His father, George Paxson, was born in Bucks county, Pa., in 1799 and came to this State when fifteen years old, locating in the town of Eden. He married Abigail Brooks, and they had eleven children.


Robinson, Mrs. Caroline B., Hamburg, p. o. Big Tree .- The late Nathan P. Bris- tol, father of Mrs. Robinson, was born in Bennington, Vt., April 22, 1783, and went to Grand Isle, Vt., with his parents when a child, where he was educated in the schools of that day. In 1807 he married Rachael Cummins of Champlain, N. Y., and they had eleven children: Annie, Adoniram E., Eliza, Harriet, Adoris P., Julia E., Sarah M., Adeline, Rachael, Caroline and Rena S. Four of them are dead. Sarah M. married Manly Cole, Rachael married Franklin B. Smith, Caroline mar- ried Ellicott B. Robinson of Grand Isle, Vt. He was a soldier in Co. I, 6th Vermont Vols., and was honorably discharged from the V. R. C. at Fortress Monroe. He was a prominent member of the Masonic order and died in 1883. Mr. Bristol and family settled on the homestead at Big Tree after a year's residence in Canada in 1809. Mr. Bristol died November 4, 1867, and his wife February 3, 1861. He served in the war of 1812-15.


Salisbury, Mrs. C. E., Hamburg .- Charles W. Salisbury was born in Montgomery county, N. Y., August 25, 1832, and was educated there in the district schools. He was a clerk in a general store. He came to Buffalo in 1855 and was bookkeeper for C. F. Mills & Co. August 15, 1858, he married Cynthia E. Osborn of Hamburg, and they had four children: Elmer E. (who died in his fifteenth year), Maurice O. (married Ella E. Gifford), Warren F. (married Elizabeth B. Odell), and Jennie A. (married H. Arnold Pierce), a practicing physician of Hamburg. Mrs. Salisbury's father, Maurice Osborn, was born in Connecticut, November 27, 1814. He was educated in the schools of that day and came to this State when he was twenty-one years old, where he was one of the best farmers in the town April 16, 1840, he married Laura Hawkins, of Hamburg, and they had five children.


Kelderhouse, Elizabeth I., Hamburg, p. o. Cloverbank .- Jeremiah Kelderhouse was born in Athens, Greene county, N. Y., July 1, 1831, and came to Buffalo with his parents when he was a year old. He was educated in the public schools and was a dealer in wood with his brother John, in the city, until he came to Hamburg, N. Y. January 27, 1857, he married Caroline Snell, and they had five children: Susan H., Rebecca, Elizabeth I., Carrie B. and Charles L. Susan H. married William Berrick of Buffalo, N. Y. ; Rebecca married Andrew W. Dieffenback ; Carrie B. married James G. Randall, and Elizabeth is a school teacher; Susan died June

12, 1895. Mr. Kelderhouse's father, Jeremiah, was born in Dutchess county, N. Y., in 1794. He married Rebecca Hawley of his native county, and they had eight children: Polly, Thomas, John, James, Samuel, Jeremiah, Jennie and Annie. Mr. Kelderhouse died in 1856 and his widow November 5, 1882.


Langbein, Frederick, Hamburg, p. o. Lakeview, was born in Mecklenburg, Ger- many, November 22, 1866, and came to America with his parents in 1869, locating in Hamburg-on-the-Lake. He was educated in the common schools and in early life was a farmer by occupation. For the past ten years he has been in the employ of N. Y. C. & St. L. Railway Co., and has been section foreman, now in his seventh year. November 5, 1891, he married Rachel L. Gehl of the town of Evans. They have had two children, Frederick (who died in infancy), and Joseph J., who was born June 28, 1895. Mr. Langbein's father, Joseph, was born in the old home in Germany, March 22, 1829. October 21, 1862, he married Rachel Heiser of his native place, and they had two children, John and Frederick (as above). Mrs. Langbein's father, Ernest Gehl, was born in Germany, February 1, 1838. He married Fred- erica Hoth of his native place, and they had five children: Minnie, Sophia, Bertha, Charles and Rachel L. (as above). Mr. and Mrs. Gehl came to America in 1869, locating in the town of Hamburg and are both living at this date, 1897.
