Stebbins, Alvin D., East Hamburg, p. o. West Falls, was born in the town of Royalton, Niagara county, N. Y., December 20, 1833. He was educated in the public schools and was a farmer by occupation. February 15, 1860, he married Hannah Green and they have two children: Frank A. and Hollis A. Frank A. is the farmer at home; Hollis A. married Sarah Cluge, and they have one son, Abram K. Mr. Stebbins's father, Oliver Stebbins, was born in Conway, Mass., in the year 1801; he was educated in the schools of that day and was a farmer by occupation. He married Laura Dinsmore, and first came to Middlesex, and soon after to Niagara county. They had nine children: John, George W., Hollis, Cordelia, Alvin D., Asa, William and Maryette. Mr. Stebbins died in 1878 and his wife in 1874. Mrs. Stebbins's father, Stephen Green, was born in Washington county in 1807; he came to Niagara county with his parents when seven years old and was educated in the district schools. He married Arvilla Griswold and they had five children: Sylvia, Salmon, Harriet, Emily and Hannah. Mr. Green died in 1873 and his wife in 1842.
Pike, Mrs. Cordelia, East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park .- The late Albert Pike was born in the town of Concord, Erie county, N. Y., March 16, 1824. He was edu- cated in the district schools and was a farmer by occupation until 1892, when he conducted a livery business at Orchard Park, and also ran the 'bus to the station, carrying the United States mail. February 17, 1851, he married Cordelia C. Cham- berlin, and they had six children: Lucern F., Aurelia A. and Ousselia A. (twins), Austin A., Lottie L. and Albert A. Lucern married Lora J. Briggs and they have three children, Norman, Grace C. and Ethel; Lottie L. mar ried Thomas Farthing and they have one son, William; Albert A. married Mary Guanac and they have five children, Franklin B., Albert A., jr., George W., Edwin and Florence. Mr. Pike died March 4, 1887. Mr. Pike's father, Isaiah, was born in Plymouth, N. H., in 1788. He married Charlotte Hecox and came to Buffalo in 1812, locating in the town of Concord. They had seven children: Almia, Asbra, Uria, Albert (as above), Sophina C., Cyrenia and Nathaniel. He died in 1866 and his widow in 1868. Mrs. Pike's father, Palmer C. Michael, Mrs. Caroline, East Hamburg, p. o. Reserve .- The late John Michael was born in Hessen, near Frankfort, Germany, in 1831; he was educated there and emi- grated to America when sixteen years of age, locating in the town of East Hamburg. In 1855 he married Caroline Reichert, formerly of Baden, Germany, and they had ten children: John G., Louise C., Emma, Phoebe, Charles F., Benjamin, Levi, Lil- lie M., Ella and Caroline P. J. Ella died in her fifth year; Charles F. married Francis Reppien of Buffalo, and they have one daughter, Caroline; Benjamin mar- ried Elizabeth Reichert of Buffalo, and they have two children, Arthur and Mildred; Levi married Anna Haff of Buffalo, and they have one daughter, Frances; Phoebe married Irving Buck of St. Louis, and they have one son, Irving, jr .; Caroline P. J. married Henry Glaney of Gardenville. Mr. Michael died March 18, 1886. Mrs. Michael's father, Jacob Reichert, was born in Baden, Germany, in 1802. He married Caroline Fritz of his native place, and they had five children: George J., Jacob, Charles F., Frederick and Caroline (as above). Massing, John, East Hamburg, p. o. West Falls, was born in Buffalo, N. Y., Octo- ber 3, 1860; he was educated in the public schools of that city. He has a milk route in Buffalo and has also been in the meat business and is now a farmer in the town of East Hamburg. May 16, 1882, he married Barbara Schill of Buffalo, formerly of Germany, and they have five children: Julia M., Charles J., Wilhelmina C., Ernest P. and Harry G. Mr. Massing's father, William Massing, was born in Germany, September 20, 1833; he was educated there and came to America in 1848, locating in Buffalo. He married Margaret Schliwiess of Buffalo, formerly of Germany, and they had four sons: William, John (as above), Henry and Peter. Both father and mother are living at this date, 1897. Mrs. Massing's father, John Schill, was born in Germany in 1821; he married Mary A. Roller of his native place and came to America in 1867, locating in Buffalo. Mr. Knoche's father, Michael Knoche, was born in Alsace, France (now Germany), in 1820, and came to the United States with his parents when ten years old; they located in Tonawanda. He married Catherine Zurbrick, formerly of Germany, and they had seven children: George, Michael, jr., Catherine, Caroline, Philip, William and Elizabeth. Mrs. Knoche died March 30, 1897, and had she lived until April 1 their married life would have been fifty-two years; Mr. Knoche survives at this date, 1897.
Hambleton, Herbert E., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in the town of East Hamburg, N. Y., March 30, 1861. He was educated in the public schools and is a general merchant with his father. May 28, 1885, he married Flora I. Baker, and they have two sons: L. Guy and Roscoe L. Mr. Hambleton's father, Christo- pher, was born in the town of Boston, Erie county, N. Y., February 8, 1825. In early life he was a merchant in Buffalo, afterward a farmer. In 1876 he opened a general mercantile business at Orchard Park, where he has continued until now, with his son, Herbert E., as general manager. He held the office of justice of the peace two terms and was postmaster nine years. He served his country in the State militia at Harrisburg, Pa. October 4, 1848, he married Susan J. Hambleton, and they had two children, Hattie (died in her sixth year) and Herbert E. (as above). His father was Samuel, son of Aaron, son of Stephen, son of James, who was the first known ancestor in Bucks county, Pa., in 1751,
Hodson, Edward H., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in Lincolnshire, England, May 20, 1855, and came to America with his parents in 1868, locating in the town of Lancaster, Erie county, N. Y. He was educated in the public schools and is a farmer by occupation. October 20, 1880, he married Ida M. Woodruff and they have five children: Emma M., Frank E., Bessie, Jessie M. and J. Leeman. Mr. Hodson's father, John, was born at the old home in England in 1820. He mar- ried Elizabeth Mann of his native place, and they had four children: Elizabeth, Ed- ward H. (as above), Anna C. and John W. Mr. Hodson died October 14, 1888, and his widow survives at this date, 1897.
Hart, Henry J .. East Hamburg, p. o. Webster's Corners, was born in Buffalo, N. Y., May 16, 1853; he was educated in the public schools and is now a farmer and market gardener. October 19, 1871, he married Annie K. Treeby of Buffalo, and they have six children: Minnie E. (now Mrs. William P. Beck of Orchard Park, N. Y.), Charles H., Allen J., William N., Elmer B. and Milton S. Mr. Hart's father, Henry, was born in England in 1823. In 1845 he married Mary A. Burgess and came to America, locating in Buffalo; they had nine children: Burgess, Susan E., Eliza- beth, Henry, Allen, Mary E., Godfrey G., Minnie and Alice S. Mr. Hart died March 8, 1888, and his wife on March 1, 1888. Mrs. Hart's father, Charles Treeby, was born in Switzerland, in 1832. He married Elizabeth Senn of his native place, and they had eight children: Elizabeth, Anna K., Mary, Emma, Nicholas, Charles, Louise and Carrie. Mr. and Mrs. Treeby are both living at this date, 1897.
Duer, Barton E., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born at Black Rock, Erie county, N. Y., October 2, 1832, and came to East Hamburg with his parents when six months old. His education was obtained in the common schools, and he together with his eldest son are among the successful farmers of the town. July 5,

Frick of this county, and they had four children: Merrill F., William (who died at the age of five months), Blanche (who died in her second year) and Mabel V., who has taught school and is now a student in the State Normal of Buffalo. Merrill F. married Eva E. Duel and they have two children, Byron E. and Edith M. Mr. Duer's father, William Duer, was born in Schoharie county in 1798 and came to Buffalo with his parents in 1809 and later to Black Rock in 1812. He was a soldier in the war of 1812, running away at the age of fourteen; he was in the battle of Lundy's Lane and honorably discharged at the close of the war. He married Betsey Zimmerman and they had six children: Catherine M. (died young), Elizabeth, Harriet C. (died young), Barton E. (as above), Helen M. and John W. Mr. Duer died in 1876 and his widow in 1895. Mrs. Duer's father, Martin Frick, was born in Pennsylvania in 1808 and came to Erie county when a young man. He married Catherine Miller and they had ten children, two died in infancy and eight survived: Susan, Joseph, Barbara, Martin, Sarah A., Daniel, Catherine and Edward. Mr. Frick died in 1884, and his widow died just six weeks later.
Darrow, Louise M., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park .- The late Henry P. Dar- row, East Hamburg, was born in Connecticut in 1808. His parents moved to Oswego county when he was a boy, where he was educated in the public schools. He came to Buffalo with his brother Noyes when a very young man and became proprietor of the Darrow Elevator. He was also in company with C. E. Bristol in the forwarding and commission business; they also had a fleet of vessels on the lake. He married Josephine Stacy of Buffalo, and they had one daughter, Louise M., who married O. H. P. Champlin. Mr. Darrow died August 2, 1852, and his widow August 23, 1895. Mrs. Darrow's grandfather, John Stacy, was a soldier in the war of 1812 on the frontier. .
Caswell, Alderson H., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in the town of Douglass, Worcester county, Mass., October 4, 1821, and came to New York State with his parents when two years old, they locating in the town of Boston, Erie county, N. Y. Mr. Caswell was educated in the district schools and with the excep- tion of three years in the West, has always followed the honorable occupation of farming. October 12, 1849, he married Cordelia Jones of the town of East Ham- burg, and they had six children: Frank (died at the age of eleven months), Wallace (died at the age of four months), Nellie E., Ida M. (died at the age of eight years), Howard H. (died at the age of six years) and Ida M. 2d. Ida M. married John E. Willis, and they have two children, Eva M. and Howard M .; Nellie E. since the death of her mother, on March 26, 1896, has presided over her father's household. Mr. Caswell in his political choice is a thorough Democrat and has held the office of assessor of his town six years. His father, Noah B. Caswell, was born at the old home in Massachusetts in 1795; in 1818 he married Anna Jefferson, and they had ten children: Sovalla, Hannah, Alderson H. (as above), Noah B., Seth J., Oscar, Caro- line M., Adeline O., Allen B. and a baby girl not named. Mr. Caswell died in 1866, and his widow in 1871.
Chandler, Sarah I., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park .- The late Isaac Chandler was born on the homestead near Deuel's Corners, May 25, 1825. His education was obtained in the district schools and he followed the honorable occupation of farming,

February 15, 1854, he married Sarah I. Eddy, and they had six children: George W., Joseph, Mary E., Hattie C., Nettie and Alice E. Joseph, Alice and Mary are dead ; George W. is the farmer at home for his mother; Nettie is married and lives in Aurora and had two children, Warren, died in infancy, and Walter; Hattie E. mar- ried Lincoln Willett and they had one son, Charles. Mr. Chandler was a soldier of the late war at Harrisburg and Elmira, under Colonel Abbott. He died July 12, 1896. His father, Isaac Chandler, was born February 1, 1766, and married Betsey Turner, and they had two children, Isaac (as above) and Joseph M., who was born August 23, 1829. Mr. Chandler died February 26, 1841; he was a soldier . in the Revolutionary war and was honorably discharged. Mrs. Chandler's father, John Eddy, was born in East Hamburg, March 25, 1798. He married Harriet Wil- gers of Buffalo, and they had six children: William W., John A., Mary E., Sarah I., Cornelia and Eliza. Mr. Eddy died in 1847 and his wife in 1846.
Cole, James, East Hamburg, p. o. Ellicott, was born in Greenfield, Saratoga county, N. Y., June 20, 1808. He was educated in the schools of that day and came to this town with his parents when an infant. He has been a successful farmer and retired in 1880. January 19, 1837, he married Almira Francis, and they had three children; Nelson W., born October 31, 1838; Oscar, born November 25, 1846, and Helen, died in infancy. Nelson W. married Josephine Blackmar, and they have one son, Herman B., who is a practicing physician of Hamburg, and Oscar married Mary M. Francis, and they have four children: James F., Charles H., Clarence C. and Jessie. Mr. Cole's father, Edward Cole, was born in Rhode Island in 1782. He married Chloe Griffin, and they had twelve children. Jonathan, Ambrose, James (as above), Edwin, Martin, Henry, Calvin, Pamelia, Alathaer, Lizzie, Sarah A. and Phebe. Mr. Cole died in 1868 and his wife in 1840. Mrs. Cole's father, Charles H. Francis, was born in East Hamburg, in November, 1808. He was educated in the district schools and married twice, first to Mary Pomroy and had two sons, Morris J. and Abram V., and for his second wife he married Laura Darling, and they had three daughters: Mary M., Laura and Josephine. Mr. Francis died March 2, 1888, and his wife in November, 1879.
Colvin, Albert Dwight, East Hamburg, p. o. Hamburg. - Mr. Colvin's father, Amos Colvin, was born in the southern part of the town of East Hamburg, March 8, 1829. He was educated in the schools of that early day and in early life was a house painter and decorator, afterwards a farmer. May 28, 1857, he married Maryette Wheelock of his native town, and they had two sons, Albert D. and Edwin R. Albert D. was well educated and was appointed deputy sheriff of the county, January 1, 1896. He married Sarah H. Sowle of the town of Hamburg, and they have two daughters, Mabel M. and Clara M. Edwin R. married twice, first to Maud Eddy of Hamburg, and they had one daughter, Ethel M., who died in infancy. Mrs. Colvin died in 1889 and for his second wife he married Lillian M. Rector. Amos Colvin's father, Amos, was born in Vermont in 1784, and came to Erie county when a young man. He married Sarah Sprague of his native town, and they had eleven children. He died in 1835 and his widow in 1875. Mrs. Colvin's father, Albert Wheelock, was born in Vermont in 1805, and came with his parents to this county when seven years old. He was educated in the schools of that day, and was a carpenter, joiner and farmer. He married Lena Clark, and they had five children : Laura, Maryette, William H.,

H. Oscar and a baby boy not named. Mr. Wheelock died June 8, 1875, and his widow January 25, 1894. Pioneers of the Colvin family settled in East Hamburg as early as 1804. In their political choice they are staunch Republicans. Mrs. Maryette Colvin's grandfather, Silas Wheelock, was a soldier in the war of 1812.
Briggs, Miles P., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in the town of Colden, Erie county, N. Y., January 17, 1843. The family moved to the town of Aurora when he was a child, where he was educated in the public schools; he has been in the lumber trade at Spring Brook and East Hamburg many years, having saw mills in both places; he is also one of the town's efficient farmers. August 24, 1867, he married Antoinette Wheeler, and they had four children: Florence J., Frank W., Arthur L. and Robert P. Florence J. was educated in East Aurora Academy, and Frank W. and Arthur L. are graduates of Bryant & Stratton's Business College of Buffalo, N. Y. Mrs. Briggs died March 29, 1890. Mr. Briggs was lieutenant in Co. I, 98th N. Y. Vols., and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. In his political choice he is a staunch Republican; the family were of the Friends de- nomination. His father, Benjamin Briggs, was born in Rhode Island about the year 1802, and came to this county with his mother when a boy. In 1833 he married Ruth Buffum, and they had nine children: Mary, Sarah, Sophia, Richard, Miles P. (as above), Elizabeth, Charlotte, Candace and Harriet. Mr. Briggs died in 1862 and his widow in 1893.
Briggs, George W., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in the town of Collins, Erie county, N. Y., October 10, 1831. He was educated in the public schools, and has had a variety of occupations; in early life he was a farmer and taught school several terms. He became a resident of East Hamburg in 1881, and the following year began to sell agricultural implements, fertilizers, cement, hardware, paints, oils, carriages and wagons, and his business has steadily increased, until now he is carry- ing on a successful and lucrative trade. He has served the county as deputy sheriff twelve years, under Koch, Gilbert and Jenkins; he was elected twice as justice of the peace, serving one full term. In the spring of 1889 he was elected supervisor of the town and resigned the office of justice; he was defeated for supervisor in 1890, but was elected in 1891, re-elected every year from 1892 to 1897 inclusive. He has served on important committees through the several terms and was elected chairman of the board in 1896 and 1897. December 29, 1895, he married Auselia E. Pike of the town of Concord, Erie county, N. Y., and they have three children: Norman E., Grace C. and Ethel O. Mr. Briggs's father, Isaac, was born in Old Hamburg, Janu- ary 2, 1817: in 1850 he married Margaret M. McMichael, and they had six children : George W. (as above), Burlinton M., Eldridge I., Horace M., Elmer (who died at the age of thirteen), and a baby not named. The family have authentic figures of its origin dating to 1540. Benzing, Adam J., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in Wurtemberg, Germany, July 29, 1846, and came to the United States with his parents in 1848. He was educated in the public schools of Buffalo, where he conducted a coal business

for thirteen years and is still interested therein, also in manufacturing ice and cold storage, together with an interest in the Beck Brewing Company. In 1887 he pur- chased a farm in the town of East Hamburg and devotes his time to improved farming. In 1869 he married Caroline Beck of Buffalo, and they have three chil- dren: Charles F., Magnus and Flora. Charles F. married Nellie Gill of Buffalo; Magnus married Alice Pemberton. Mr. Benzing's father, Jacob, was born in Ger- many in 1818; he married Elizabeth Midert of his native place, and they had eight children: Elizabeth, Adam J. (as above), Christine, Jacob, jr., Frederick, Emma, Kate and John. Mrs. Benzing died in 1883 and he survives at this date, 1897. Adam Benzing is a member of Harmony Lodge No. 696, F. & A. M., and of the Adytum Chapter, R. A. M. In his political choice he is an independent Republican. The family attend the Evangelical Lutheran church.
Benning, Henry, East Hamburg, p. o. Ellicott, was born in Alton, Holland, Sep- tember 16, 1825. He was educated in their schools and came to America in the year 1851, locating first in Springville, afterwards in Buffalo. In 1854 he came to the town of East Hamburg, and October 11, 1859, he married Agnes Yakle of this town, formerly of Germany. They had four children: Mary, Edward D., Annie R. and Lydia A. Mary married Adam Horn of Batavia, and they have two children, Rosa L. and a baby boy not named; Edward D. married Lizzie Seim of the town of Aurora, and they have five daughters, Edith E., Jessie K., Edna M., Lulu L., and Grace A .; Annie R. married Elsworth B. Curtis of Webster's Corners, and they have three daughters, Ruth, Sarah and Lydia; the youngest daughter resides at home. The family are members of the German Evangelical church and Mr. Ben- ning has held the following offices in church: Deacon, trustee, class leader and superintendent of Sabbath school. In his political choice Mr. Benning is a thorough Republican and has resided on his homestead thirty-three years.
Barber, Theodore, East Hamburg, p. o. Ellicott, was born in the town of Ham- burg before its division, August 6, 1826. He was educated in the log school house and afterwards in the district schools and follows the honorable occupation of farm- ing. February 14, 1858, he married Mervina Cartright, formerly of England, and they had three children: Emma, Lina C. and David, who died in his ninth year. Emma resides in the West and Lina C. married Franklin Willard of East Hamburg. Mr. Barber's father, John Barber, was born in New Jersey in 1779; he came to Hamburg in 1804. He married Betsey Francis of Cayuga county, and they had eleven children: Annie, Roswell, David, Philetus, Lyman, Ambrose, Theodore (as above), Polly, Eliza, Emily and John, who died young. Mr. Barber died in 1863 and his widow in 1874. Mrs. Barber's father, William Cartright, was born in Eng- land in 1780. He married Mary A. Moss of his native place, and they came to America in 1838. He died in 1854 and his widow in 1866.
Bowers, John, East Hamburg, p. o. Reserve, was born in Bavaria, Germany, De- cember 8, 1830, where he was educated and was a farmer by occupation. July 12, 1849, he married Susanna Holman of his native place, and they emigrated to Amer- ica the same year, locating in East Hamburg, N. Y. They had six children: Henry H., Conrad W., Louise B., John M., Kate C. and Hattie D. Henry H. married Josephine Reef (died in February, 1894), and they had five children, Amelia, Anna,

Arthur, Henry and Herbert; Conrad W. married Anna Allen, and they have three sons, Clyde, Henry and Allen; Louise B. married Andrew Yox, jr., and they have two children, Laura J. and Milton D. Mr. Bowers's father, Adam Bowers, was born on the old homestead in Germany, and married Dora Genlein of his native place; they had four children: Valentine, John (as above), Margaret and Elizabeth. Mr. and Mrs. Bowers are both deceased. Mrs. Bowers's father, Baldazer Holman, was born in Bavaria, and married Margaret Struebel, and they had eight children: An- drew, Lawrence, John, Michael, Susanna (as above), Margaret, Mary and Dora.
Schwinger, Christoff, Buffalo, is one of the old representatives and successful business men of Tonawanda, Erie county. He was born in Wurtemberg, Germany, October 22, 1825, and is a son of Michael and Elizabeth Schwinger. He attended the schools in his native place and worked on a farm with his father. In 1840, when a boy of about sixteen, he came to America alone, being preceded by twelve years by an older brother. He came direct to Tonawanda and soon found employment at various occupations, such as farming, canal boating, etc. He was industrious and saving, and in 1857 bought a farm in Wheatfield, Niagara county, and has since then owned numerous other farms. He now owns a valuable farm of 155 acres joining Tonawanda village. He later identified himself in the brewing business, in which he is still interested, owning $25,000 in stock in the Brush Brewing Company of Tonawanda. In 1875, with Edward Evans, he organized the banking house of Evans & Schwinger; in 1886 the name was changed to The State Bank. In 1889 Mr. Schwinger was elected vice-president of the bank, which office he still holds, being also one of the directors of the bank. He is proprietor and superintendent of a liv- ery stable, owns four stores and numerous other buildings in the village, and is one of the directors and stockholders of the Tonawanda Gas Company. In politics Mr. Schwinger is a Republican ; he served his town two terms as supervisor, has been vil- lage trustee, and was president of the board of village school trustees for six years. He is a member of the Masonic Fraternity. He has been twice married, his first wife being Sarah Kopp, by whom one daughter, Elizabeth (Mrs. Walter Brock) of Buffalo, was born; his second wife was Susan Kopp, a sister of his first wife, and they have one daughter, Sarah (Mrs. William Warren), of Tonawanda.
