Newton, Mrs. Phebe J., Hamburg .- The late William S. Newton was born in the town of East Hamburg in 1833 and educated in the schools of that day and Spring- ville Academy. In 1855 he married Phebe J. Deuel. He died in July, 1893. Mrs. Newton's father, Isaac Deuel, was born in Saratoga county in 1801. He married Sarah Leggett and they had six children.


Potter, Reuben, Hamburg, p. o. Lakeview, was born in the town of Hamburg, N. Y., April 22, 1855. He was educated in the district schools and has always followed the occupation of farming. September 9, 1875, he married Ida Buxton, and they have three sons: Herbert V., Everett H. and Roy L. Mr. Potter's father, Reuben, was born in the eastern part of the State in 1809. He married Cynthia Simmons, who was born in Vermont in 1813, and came on the canal to Buffalo in 1829. They had nine children: Mariett, Mary, Melissa, Henriett and Martha, are dead ; Armina, Joseph, William and Reuben are still living. Mr. Potter, sr., died in 1871 and his widow in 1886. Mrs. Potter's father, Braley K. Buxton, was born in Vermont in 1818 and came to this State when a boy. He married Harriet E. Phillips. Mr. Buxton died in 1878 and his widow in 1881.


Pierce, George M., Hamburg, was born on the old homestead in the town of Ham- burg, N. Y., March 3, 1836. He was educated in the district schools and is a farmer by occupation. May 22, 1861, he married S. Jane Hickox, and they had two daugh- ters: Stella T. and Mary E. Stella T. married John S. Beaver of Pennsylvania; they have one son, Walter E. Mary E. is at home. Mrs. Pierce's father, John W. W. Hickox, was born in West Bloomfield, Ontario county, N. Y., in 1800; he was a cloth dresser by occupation and afterwards a farmer. In 1821 he married Tryphena Estee of Water Valley, and they had four children: Horace W., Mary E., Gertrude and S. Jane (as above). Mr. Hickox died in 1863 and his widow in 1884. Mrs. Pierce's grandfather, Asa Hickox, was the first white settler who crossed the Genesee River.

January 5, 1842. He was educated in the district schools and his early life, until 1893, was spent on the farm. In 1893 he purchased the Wood Lawn Heights Hotel at Wood Lawn Beach, which place he conducts with success, as the increasing crowds each year attest. January 1, 1871, he married Martha !J. Smith of Hamburg, and they have five children: Cromwell C., Maude E., Addie M., Grace B. and Byron E. Mr. Pierce's father, J. Arnold, was born in Vermont, January 15, 1805. He came to this State in 1827 and married Rachael Morse, formerly of New Hampshire, and they had nine children. Mr. Pierce died March 30, 1885, and his wife November 11, 1890.


Johnson, Mrs. Josephine, East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park .- James Johnson was born in County Antrim, Ireland, April 1, 1841, and came to the United States with his parents when a boy; they located near Orchard Park, where he was edu- cated in the common schools. His early life was spent on the farm, and he was a hotel keeper in Buffalo and East Hamburg for many years. April 19, 1870, he mar- ried Josephine Cook of the town of Concord, Erie county, N. Y. Mrs. Johnson's father, Peter Cook, was born in Vermont in the year 1803; he came to Buffalo when nineteen years old. In 1827 he married Lydia White, formerly of Rutland, Vt., and they had nine children: Melinda, Norman, Adeline Jerome, Susan, Wal- lace, Darius, John and Josephine. Mr. Cook died in 1872 and his wife in her fifty- ninth year. The White family have been identified with the early settlement of the county and first settled in the county in the town of Collins. Mrs. Johnson's mother taught the first school in the village of Gowanda (then Lodi).


Kleindinst, Mrs. J., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park .- Mrs. Kleindinst's father, John Schiffler, was born in Bier, Germany. June 7, 1827. He was educated in their schools and came to the United States August 29, 1848, locating in Buffalo, N. Y. He was a farmer, carpenter and joiner. In February, 1850, he married Mary Diller of his native place, and they had eight children: J. Casper, Katherine, Barbara, John, John (2), Mary, Susan and John (3). Katherine, John (1) and John (2) are dead. J. Casper resides in Buffalo; he married Katherine Ruckdeshel of Buffalo, and they have four children, John C., Ida, William and Carrie. John C. married Carrie Lempky of Buffalo, and has one son, Edgar. Barbara married Jacob Kleindinst of Buffalo, who was a merchant in that city, and they had two sons, Jacob C. W. and George. Mr. Kleindinst died September 5, 1879. Susan married Millard Mearns of Freedom, Cattaraugus county, and they have one daughter, Alta. John N. married Lena Kubli of West Falls, N. Y. Mr. Schiffler's father, John, was born at the old home in Germany; he married Marguretta Schubner of his native place, and they had nine children. He died in 1851 and Mrs. Schiffler came to America with her chil- dren in 1853. She died in 1860.


Corbin, Sanford A., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in Yorkshire, , Cattaraugus county, N. Y., April 22, 1865. He was educated in the district schools and learned the blacksmith's trade. March 22, 1896, he came to Orchard Park, where he is doing all kinds of horseshoeing. June 13, 1886, he married Sarah E. Kellom, and they have three children, Carroll G., Yolande P. and Gladys M. Mr. Corbin's father, Martin, was born in Scotland in 1825, and came to America when a young man, locating in Prattham, Erie county, where he was also a black-

smith. He married Cordelia Freeman, and they had six children: Frank, Amelia. Clayton, Kittie, Lovinus and Sanford A., as above. He died March 11, 1897. Mrs. Corbin's father, Alonzo F. Kellom, was born in the town of Concord, February 10, 1836, and died April 22, 1895. He married Luna S. Paul, and they had five chil- dren: Sarah E. (as above), Flora B., Jay A., Harvey R. and Horace F. Luna S. Kellom died February 28, 1895.


Holmwood, Mrs. Adelaide, East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park .- The late Henry Holmwood was born in England, January 25, 1844, and came with his parents to the United States in 1850. He was educated in the public schools and was always a farmer. December 20, 1866, he married Adelaide Aldrich of the town of Aurora, and they had eight children; two died in infancy, the others are as follows: Mason H., Elery E., Charles S., Welcome K., Warren (died September 6, 1884, at the age of fourteen), and E. Belle. Henry Holmwood died September 18, 1889. Mason H. married Louisa, daughter of Elias Freeman, June 3, 1896. Mrs. Holmwood's father, Thomas Aldrich, was born in North Adams, Mass., in 1793. He married twice; first, to Miss Daniels, and after her death he married Mrs. Almira (Smith) Morey, and they had two children, Adelaide and Josephine. Mr. Aldrich died in 1869 and his wife in 1885.


Oaks, Mrs. Josephine, East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park .- The late Norman W. Oaks was born in the town of East Hamburg, January 5, 1834; he was educated in the district schools and was a farmer. April 4, 1875, he married Josephine, daugh- ter of Addis E. and Jane M. Smith, and they had five children: Helen M., G. How- ard, Jennie, who died at the age of five years, Loren A. and Warren D. Mr. Oaks died May 3, 1884. Mrs. Oaks's father, Addis E. Smith, was born on the Smith home- stead, February 14, 1830; he was educated in the public schools and always followed farming. January 1, 1851, he married Jane M. Seaton of Otsego county, and they had three children: Josephine (as above), Hattie I. and Elizabeth C. Hattie I. married Samuel F. Oaks, and they had four children, Cora J., Albert S., Mabel E. and Walter. Elizabeth C. married Harrison A. Oaks of Buffalo. Mr. Smith died November 9, 1870, in the prime of life.


Beltz, Adam, East Hamburg, p. o. Wast Falls, was born in Germany, October 4, 1829. He was educated there and was a farmer by occupation. He came to America in 1854, locating in Buffalo, and soon after during the same year, in the town of East Hamburg. In 1855 he married Mary Klaes of East Ha.nburg, formerly of Germany, and they had eight children: Henry, died at the age of forty; George, John, Adolph, Elizabeth, Catherine, Wilhelmina and Frederick. George married Anna Hartwick of Gardenville; John married Louisa Hartwick; Adolph married Louisa Burckhal- ter; Katherine married Mr. Burckhalter, and they have one daughter, Emily M .; Wilhelmina married George Dascomb of Athol Springs, now of West Falls. In his political choice Mr. Beltz is a thorough Republican.


Townsend, John, jr., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in Oxfordshire, Eng., October 24, 1826, where he was educated. At the age of twenty-one he came to the United States, locating in Buffalo. He has always followed the occupa- tion of farming. He married Mary A. Wright of Buffalo, and they have five chil- dren, John C., Mary Y., George W., William E. and Sarah G. John C. Townsend,

the eldest son, has been for the past ten years a traveling salesman. September 6, 1887, he married Erika E., only daughter of Horace and Elmira Buffum, and they have one daughter, Myra E. George W. is engaged in market gardening. He married Jennie L., only daughter of Erastus and Emily Buffum of East Hamburg. They have three children, Elizabeth E., Gertrude B. and Elizabeth M. William E., the same as the other two sons, spent the early part of his life on the farm, and after- wards was engaged as teacher in the public schools of the town, and is at present secretary of the Husted Milling and Elevator Company. The entire family are mem- bers of the Episcopal church, and were among the first twelve communicants who organized St. Mark's church of East Hamburg.


Farnsworth, Arthur T., East Hambnrg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in the town of Boston, Erie county, N. Y., June 24, 1864, and was educated in the public schools. March 14, 1888, he married Cora M. Duncan of his native town. Mr. Farnsworth in his political choice is a thorough Republican. His father, Reuben Farnsworth, was born in the town of Boston, August 24, 1831, and was married twice; first to Sarah H. Clapp, who bore him three children: David, Helen and Alice. Mrs. Farnsworth died in 1860, and Mr. Farnsworth married for his second wife, Sally Merriam, and they had five children: Frank L., Arthur T., Amelia A., Laura A. (who died in her third year) and Cyrus M. Mr. Farnsworth died January 24, 1896, and his wife May 1, 1891. Mrs. Farnsworth's father, John G. Duncan, was born in Rochester, Monroe county, N. Y., November 12, 1830; he married Roxanna Howard of Canada, and they had eight children; Alida L., Eva R., Jennie M., Cora M., Samuel J., Susan I., John G., jr., and Charlotte A. Alida L. and Susan I. are both dead; Mr. and Mrs. Duncan are both living at this date, 1897. The Farnsworths were among the first settlers of the township of Boston.


Bachman, John D., Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in the town of West Seneca, N. Y., September 3, 1863. He was educated in the district schools and is by occupation a contractor and builder. April 26, 1889, he married Emma S. Busch, and they have four children: Amy L., Elsie K., E. Marie and Marjorie I. Mr. Bach- man was elected collector of the town in 1895 and re-elected in 1896. He is a charter member of Erie Tent No. 161, K. O. T. M. His father, Rudolph Bachman, was born in Baden, Germany, September 20, 1829. He came to America when a young man, locating in the town of West Seneca. He married Marie Boller, and they have seven children, of whom only three survive: Anna, John D. (as above) and Caroline. Mrs. Bachman's father, Frederick Busch, was born in Wurtemberg, Germany, April 2, 1820. He married Elizabeth Kinnie and came to America in 1853. Three of their children were born in Germany, nine all told.


Barber, Mrs. Rachel, East Hamburg, p. o. Ellicott .- The late Roswell F. Barber was born in the town of Hamburg, N. Y., August 27, 1813. He was educated in the district schools and followed the honorable occupation of farming. He married twice; first, on November 5, 1838, to Cyrena Colvin, and they had four children : Ury, Philetus, Horace and Rachel. Mrs. Barber died June 14, 1850, and in June, 1853, Mr. Barber married Rachel S. Colvin, and they had three children: Harrison E., Sanford T. and Horace H., who died in his fifth year. Mr. Barber died Decem- ber 13, 1879. Harrison W. married Juilett Hewett; Sanford T. married Sarah A.

Perkins, and they have four children, Clara E., Ida M., Elbert S. and Ethel S. Mrs.' Barber's father, Isaac, youngest son of Amos and Mary Colvin, was born in Vermont in 1800. He married Clorana Beardsley, and they had three children: Cyrena, Ury and Rachel (as above). Mr. Colvin died in 1829 and his widow September 13, 1885. Jacob and Luther Colvin were soldiers in the war of 1812.


Benning, Bennett, East Hamburg, p. o. Ellicott, was born in Alton, Holland, April 20, 1830, and was educated there. He came to the United States in the year 1847 and located in Buffalo, N. Y .; he was a gardener by occupation and remained in Buffalo six years, coming to the town of East Hamburg in 1854, where he pur- chased his present homestead. In that same year he married Margaret Hottenmyer of Buffalo, and they had four children: M. Oliver, Benjamin, William E. and D. Franklin. M. Oliver (died May 12, 1897) married Mary Herbst, and they have six children, George, Ida, Albert, Eugene, Lawrence and Esther. Benjamin married Lena Saltzman, and they have five children, Clara, Lydia, Alice, Frances and Ethel; William E. married Mary R. Beir, and they have one daughter, Margaret; D. Franklin married Hattie M. Field, and they have four children, William S., Ruth M., Frank B. and Frederick. Benjamin and family, William E. and family and the widow of M. Oliver belong to the Evangelical church. Bennett Benning has held the office of deacon, class leader and superintendent of the Sunday school.


Coon, Abram, East Hamburg, p. o. Armor, was born on the old homestead in Hamburg, N. Y., November 6, 1837. He was educated in the public schools and follows farming. September 2, 1860, he married Louisa E. Getty, and they had six children, three of whom are dead; those living are, Willis E., Maud M. and Iva M. Willis E. married Elizabeth Groth, and they have two children, Willis A. and Eva M. Mr. Coon's father, Charles Coon, was born in the old town of Hamburg, Octo- ber 14, 1812. He married Sylvia Smith, and they had three children: Abram (as above), Melissa and Sarah. Mr. Coon died in 1893 and his wife in 1887. Mrs. Coon's father, James Getty, was born in Troy, N. Y., in 1803. He married Mary Fosdick of the town of Boston, Erie county, N. Y., and they had six children: George W., Lavant W., William W., Louisa L. (as above), Mary C. and Nathaniel N. Mr. Getty died in 1864 and his widow in 1891.


Hoag, Mrs. Frances, East Hamburg, p. o. Windom .- Theodore Hoag was born in the town of East Hamburg, N. Y., in 1830; he was educated in the district schools and followed the honorable occupation of farming. February 2, 1870, he married Frances Albert. Mr. Hoag's father, Henry, was born in Washington county in 1800, and came to Erie county with his parents when a boy. He was educated in the schools of that day and was a farmer; he married Alvira Spaulding, and they had eight children: Theodore (as above), Adelia, Wellington S., Harriet, Adelaide, Angeline, David and Jerome, who died young. Mr. Hoag died in 1880 and his wife in 1857. Mrs. Hoag's father, Jerome Albert, was born in Erie county in 1816. He married Eliza Frances, and they had two children, Frances and Joseph; the latter married Gracia Bruce, and they had five children, Minnie, Eliza, Alice, Joseph, jr., and Nellie (deceased). Mr. Albert died in 1850 and his widow in 1869.


Schofield, William, East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in Yorkshire, England, November 6, 1832, and was educated in their schools. He was a painter

and decorator by occupation and is now a farmer. In 1852 he married Martha Blackburn of his native place, and in February, 1853, they came to the United States, and the following year came to Erie county. They had ten children: Hen- rietta, George, Mary, Sarah, Lillie M., Lucy G., William J., Verna C., Edward and Elizabeth, who died in infancy. Henrietta married William Smith, and they have three children, Nettie, William and Mabel. George married Emma Mullen of Genesee county, and they have two children, Edith and Roy. Mary E. married Otis Clark, and they have two children, Gertrude and Howard. Sarah married George Purdy, and they have one daughter, Lillian M. William J. married Jennie Merriman. Verna married David McMillan, and they have two children, Ethel and William. Edward married Mary Hazelsweet and they have one son, Clarence. In his political choice Mr. Schofield is a thorough Republican.


Jones. Miss Amanda, East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park .- The late Ransom Jones, sr., was born in Stillwater, Saratoga county, N. Y., October 4, 1779; he was educated in the common schools of that early day and was a lumberman and farmer by occupation. In 1807 he married Sally Brady and came to East Hamburg in 1811; they had twelve children: Betsey, William, Mellissa, Hiram, Emma C., Amanda (who died at the age of eleven years), Sally, Ransom, Jane, Mary, Cordelia and Amanda 2d. Betsey married Peter Cooper, and they have three children, William, James and Mary; William married Mrs. Lorinda Allen; Hiram died in his twenty- sixth year; Jane married Andrew Drake, and they had two children, Helen (who died at the age of sixteen) and Frank; Mary died young; Cordelia married Alder- son H. Caswell; Emma C. and Amanda are the farmers at home. Mr. Jones died in 1859, aged eighty years, and his wife on April 25, 1839. The grandfather of great-grandfather Jones came to the United States from Wales, England, conse- quently of Welch nationality.


Smith, Charles I., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born on the Smith homestead, February 14, 1828, and was educated in the common schools and has al- ways followed the honorable occupation of farming. He was married twice; first in 1855 to Laura A. Heath, and they had one daughter, Ellen E. Mrs. Smith died in 1865, and on March 30, 1867, Mr. Smith married Hattie H. Sisler, and they have four children: George A., Harry H., Albourn E. and Daniel W. Ellen E. married William Henshaw of the town of Aurora, and they have one son, Everett C .; George A. married Emma Foot of East Hamburg, and they have one son, Russell F. Mr. Smith has been one of the assessors of the town for twenty-four years. His father, Dr. Elisha F. Smith, was born in Rutland county, Vt., in 1792, and came with his parents to Cayuga county, where he was educated in the common schools and studied medicine and became a practicing physician. He came to this town on horseback with only $2.50 in his pocket, which was the amount of his earthly pos- sessions. In 1814 he married Mary Husse of the town of Collins, and they had a daughter, Mary J. Mrs. Smith died and he married Elizabeth Howland of Ontario county, and they had eleven children: Erasmus, Erlon G., Louisa (who died at the age of three years), Charles I. (as above), Addis E., Mortimer F., Alcy E., Maria L., Helen V., Harriet I. and E. Fitch. Dr. Smith was supervisor of the town for seventeen years and served two terms in the State Legislature, in 1837 and again in 1844. He died in 1867 and his widow in 1876.

Knowlton, Lucinda, East Hamburg, p. o. Hamburg .- The late William Knowlton was born in the north of Ireland in 1810. He was sent to England at the age of seven, and came to the United States when a young man. He was a merchant and sold goods from his traveling wagon with great success for many years. He mar- ried Rhoba, daughter of Zenas Smith of the town of East Hamburg, and they had three children, Lucinda, Ellen and Henry. Ellen married Burton Prindle of Ham- burg, and they have two children, Alice and Floyd; Mr. Prindle is a railway con- ductor. Henry married Delphine Shoemaker of Hamburg, and they have four chil- dren, Ruby M., Leroy B., Edna M. and Mabel E. Mr. Knowlton died September 30, 1896, mourned by a bereaved wife and children. Mrs. Knowlton's father, Zenas Smith, was born in Vermont in 1785. He married Hannah Allen of his native place, and came to this State and county. They had eleven children: Sylvanus, Sarah, Phoebe, Armina, Rhoba (as above), Nathan A., Zelia, Hannah, Joel, Livonia Lucinda. Mr. Smith died June 26, 1861, and his wife October 7, 1847.


Graves, Myron, East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born on the homestead opposite to where he now resides, December 7, 1829. He was educated in the dis- trict schools and follows the honorable occupation of farming. September 10, 1861, he married Orrilla R. Thurber of the town of Aurora, and they had four daughters: Hattie D., Rose B., Mary J. and Myra I. Rose B. and Myra I. are both dead. Hattie D. married Daniel Starkweather, and they have three children, Sarah, George and Lucy. Mary J. married Michael Schichtel of the town of Lancaster, and they have three children, Ralph, Allen and Gertrude. Mr. Graves's father, Stephen R., was born in Vermont, June 29, 1805, and came to this State with his father when seven years old. He married Delana Perry of his native State, and they had seven children : Myron (as above), Merritt, Seth P., A. Minerva, Curtis L., William H. and Charles. Mr. Graves died in 1882 and his wife March 17, 1869. Myron Graves's grandfather, Gideon Graves, was born in Vermont, April 17, 1776. He married Carolina Scott of his native State. Mrs. Orrilla Graves's father, Seth K. Thurber, was born in Vermont in 1818, and came to this State when a young man. He married Harriet Darbee of the town of Aurora, and they had six chil- dren: Martha M., Orrilla R. (as above), Elizabeth, Seth F., Charles W. and Jede- diah D. Mr. Thurber was killed in a charge on Fort Wagner in 1863. The first known of the Darbee family, three young married couples came from Vermont in 1816 and located in the town of Aurora.


Brady, Frank B., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in the town of East Hamburg, N. Y., March 26, 1831. He was educated in the district schools and has followed the honorable occupation of farming. February 3, 1867, he married Louisa A. Holmes of the town of Aurora, and they have two children, John R. and Harriet L. John R. is a wholesale salesman of coal for H. K. Wick & Co., of Buf- falo, N. Y. He married Maud Russell of the town of Collins, and they have one daughter, Ruth L. Harriet L. married George A. Torry, of Buffalo, a dry goods salesman, and they have one son, Frank B. Mr. Brady's father, John R., was born in Washington county, N. Y., in 1802 and came with his parents to Erie county when fifteen years old. He was educated in the schools of that day and was a farmer. He married Rosina Utley, and they had four children: Rensselaer, Charles, Frank B. (as above) and Laura. Mrs. Brady died in 1836, and Mr. Brady in 1863. Frank

Ehlers, John, East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in Germany, April 18, 1849, and came with his parents to the United States in 1866, locating in the town of East Hamburg. November 25, 1867, he enlisted in Co. L, 1st Artillery, U. S. A., was appointed corporal and afterwards promoted to duty sergeant, and was honor- ably discharged November 25, 1870; he returned to East Hamburg, and September 18, 1871, married Maria Kuehl, formerly of his native place. Mr. and Mrs. Ehlers were the parents of twelve children: John C., William H. (married Louise Kophinst), Henry C., Charles L., Ludwig F., August H., Edward C., Minnie C., Frederick J., Maria S., Dora M. (who died in her fourth year) and Louise W. Mr. Ehlers's father, Charles Ehlers, was born at the old home in Germany in 1819; he married Maria Kessler, and they had nine children: Helena, Dora, John (as above), Minnie, Sophia, Frederica, William, Henry and Louise. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ehlers are both liv- ing at this date (1897). Mrs. Ehlers's father, John Kuehl, was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, in the year 1817; he married Louise Brinkmann, and they had two chil- dren, Maria and Caroline. Mr. and Mrs. John Kuehlare both living at this date (1897). John Ehlers is a member of Erie Tent No. 161, K. O. T. M., Orchard Park, N. Y. In his political choice he is a staunch Republican, and has just been elected collector of his town, after serving as inspector of election for the last seven years, being chairman of the board four years.


Warnke, Fred, East Hamburg, p. o. West Falls, was born in the kingdom of Meck- lenburg, Germany, September 21, 1842. He was educated there and followed the honorable occupation of farming. He came to America in 1867 and located in the town of West Seneca, Erie county, N. Y. January 12, 1868, he married Wilhelmina Eichstadt, formerly of his native place, and they have eight children: Mary S., Emma C., Henry C., Martha A., John E., Hattie F., Anna M. and Ella D. They bought their present homestead in 1872 and have resided here since. The family are all enterprising and thrifty; they are the architects of their own success. In his po- litical choice Mr. Warnke is a thorough Republican.
