On Nov. 14, 1900, Mr. Wilson married Miss Gail Taggart, the daughter of George and Jennie (Davidson) Taggart, of North Lawrence, N. Y. Mrs. Wilson was born in North Lawrence, N. Y. Mr. Wilson is a Republican and has always manifested a keen interest in local civic affairs. He has served as village treasurer. He is secretary of the Rotary Club and belongs to the Chamber of Commerce. He and his family hold membership in the Methodist Episcopal Church, and he belongs to the Masonic Lodge, having been secretary of the local organiza- tion for 12 years.
Erik Theodore Fredsell .- One of the thoroughly progressive men of Tupper Lake is Erik Theodore Fredsell, electrical contractor. He was born in Stockholm, Sweden, Aug. 15, 1884, the son of Peter and Petra (Anderson) Fredsell.
Peter Fredsell was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1854, and during the greater part of his life engaged in the manufacture of cigar boxes. He was married in 1880 to Miss Petra Anderson, the daughter of Theodore Anderson. Their children were: 1. Petra, born in 1882, married Professor Arthur Burkhard, of Harvard University, lives in Cambridge, Mass. 2. Ranghild, born in 1883, married Dr. Fritz Laubender, lives at Hamburg, Germany. 3. Erik Theodore, the subject of this sketch. 4. Werna, born in 1890, married Hans Koller, former officer of the German Army, lives in Munich, Germany. 5. Sigrid, born in 1892, lives in Stockholm, Sweden.
Erik Theodore Fredsell's father died in 1918 and his mother's death occurred in 1901. Both are buried in Stockholm.
The early life of Erik Theodore Fredsell was spent in his native land. He was graduated in 1902 from the Technical School of Stockholm and the following year came to the United States and settled in New York City. He spent a year as an electrical engineer with the New York Edison Company, after which he was employed for three years by Blum & Com- pany, electrical engineering contractors. During that time he engaged in contract work for that firm in Mexico, South America, and the West Indies. Mr. Fredsell then spent five years as an independent electrical engineer in New York City, Albany and Plattsburg. He came to Tupper Lake in 1919 and for two years was identified with the Oval Wood Dish Company, Inc. In 1921 he established his present business as an electrical contractor.
Mr. Fredsell was married on Sept. 30, 1911, to Miss Florence Everding, the daughter of John and Matilda Everding, of New York City. They are the parents of four children: 1. Eric John, born in New York City, in November, 1912, attends the University of Alabama. 2. Estelle Ragn-

Mr. Fredsell is identified with the Republican party in politics. He is a member of the Episcopal Church, and is a 32nd degree Mason and mem- ber of Ziyara Temple of Utica. He also belongs to the Chamber of Commerce.
Edward Bernard Frenette is numbered among the popular young busi- ness men of Faust, and he is a veteran of the World War. He was born at South Colton, N. Y., Jan. 15, 1891, the son of Warren W. and Anna O'Hara Frenette.
Warren W. Frenette, also a native of New York, now lives retired at Norfolk, N. Y. During his active career he was interested in general farming and stock raising. He was married in 1885 to Miss Anna O'Hara, the daughter of Charles and Margaret O'Hara, of South Colton. Their children are: 1. Margaret, born March 4, 1888, married William Burl, lives at Worcester, Mass. 2. Edward Bernard, the subject of this sketch. 3. Frank, born in 1894, a World War veteran, having served in France with the 78th Division. He is now in a government hospital in New York City. 4. Marshall, born in 1897, a World War veteran, is vice president of the Northern New York Grocery Company, of Malone, lives at Potsdam, N. Y. 5. Charles, born in 1900, lives at Tupper Lake, where he is associ- ated with Frenette Bros. 6. Warren, born in 1903, lives at Utica, N. Y. 7. Dorothy, born in 1906, is a teacher in the public schools of Potsdam.
Edward Bernard Frenette obtained his education in the public schools and was graduated from Norwood High School in 1909. He was employed in a Norwood clothing store by W. D. Fuller for seven years and in 1917 enlisted for service in the World War. Mr. Frenette served first in Com- pany D, 1st New York National Guards, and was later transferred to the 107th Infantry, 27th Division. He served in France from May, 1918, until the close of the war and participated in many important engagements and drives. Later, he was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant and became battalion supply officer of the 6th Division. He also was in Ger- many with the Army of Occupation, and was discharged in June, 1919. Mr. Frenette then came to Franklin County and was employed for almost three years by J. H. Littlefield, dry goods and clothing merchants. In 1922 he established his own business at Tupper Lake, which he success- fully operated for a period of six years. On June 1, 1928, he took over the interests of Mr. Littlefield, and combined the two stores.

Mr. Frenette was married on Oct. 26, 1921, to Miss Elizabeth Guhrenz, of Brooklyn, N. Y. She died on Oct. 26, 1927, leaving a son, Joseph Ed- ward, who was born in 1924.
Politically, Mr. Frenette is a Democrat. He holds membership in the Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, "40 and 8" society, and Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Frenette has been active in the work of Legion Mountain Camp, which was acquired by the State of New York and the American Legion as a convalescent camp for disabled vet- erans of the World War. It contains 1,285 acres and is a hospital center and recreation spot. The camp was established in 1922 and at its organiza- tion Mr. Frenette was chosen as one of its directors.
Frank Elmer Smith .- As proprietor of a hardware business at Tupper Lake for almost 30 years, Mr. Smith is widely and favorably known throughout Franklin County. He was born at Constable, N. Y., June 19, 1874, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Lewis) Smith.
Thomas Smith, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil War. He was born in Ireland in 1830 and emigrated to the United States with his two brothers in 1851. They settled in northern New York, and in early life Thomas Smith was interested in farming. He served throughout the Civil War as a member of Company E, 98th New York Volunteer Infantry. Later, Mr. Smith became interested in business at Malone, where he con- ducted a retail meat business. He died in 1906 and is buried in Morning- side Cemetery, Malone. His wife was a native of Burke, N. Y. To them were born the following children: 1. Died in infancy. 2. Minor L., born in 1853, died in 1925, was for many years an engineer on the O. & L. C. Division of the N. Y. C. Railroad, and lived at Malone. 3. Augusta, born in 1855, died in 1882, was the wife of Fayette Barlow, of Malone. 4. Olive, died in 1896, was the wife of George Douglass, of Burke, N. Y. 5. Bert Thomas, lives at Brandon, N. Y. 6. Lillian, born in 1871, is the widow of Schuyler Cargin, lives at Constable, N. Y. 7. Clarence, born in 1872, lives at Dickinson Center, N. Y. 8. Frank Elmer, the subject of this sketch.
The boyhood of Frank Elmer Smith was spent at Burke, N. Y. At the age of 16 years he was employed in a creamery at that place and two years later he was employed in a harness shop at Burke, which was owned by his brother-in-law, George Douglass. They became successful harness makers and later Mr. Smith purchased the business of Joseph Jarvis. In 1902 he removed his business to Tupper Lake and at that time took over the interests of D. C. Randall. He also added a hardware stock to his

business and has since managed the enterprise at this place. He has a well stocked shop and carries on a large volume of business annually.
Mr. Smith was married in April, 1908, to Miss Anna Maud Marsh, the daughter of Byron Marsh, of Norfolk, N. Y. She died Nov. 6, 1930, and is buried in Tupper Lake Cemetery. To Mr. and Mrs. Smith was born a son, Floyd M., born March 21, 1910. He is a graduate of Tupper Lake High School and is now associated in business with his father.
Mr. Smith has always been a Republican. He is a member of the Mount Arab Masonic Lodge, No. 847; 32nd degree, Utica Consistory, and belongs to the Ziyara Temple, of Utica, N. Y. He is also affiliated with B. P. O. Elks, and belongs to the Fish and Game Club of Tupper Lake.
John A. Finnigan .- Prominent in newspaper circles in St. Lawrence County is John A. Finnigan, who is owner and editor of the Commercial Advertiser, of Canton. He was born in the town of Canton, Jan. 10, 1870, the son of James and Hannah (Moore) Finnigan.
James Finnigan was born in County Cork, Ireland, June 29, 1834, and his wife was a native of the same county, born March 17, 1847. They came to this country in early life and settled first in Massachusetts and later in St. Lawrence County. Mr. Finnegan served during the Civil War as a member of the 164th New York State Volunteer Infantry, which was known as "Corcoran's Irish Legion." He was wounded in battle and spent some time in Lincoln Hospital, Washington, D. C. Upon his return to St. Lawrence County, Mr. Finnegan engaged in general farming. He retired in 1919 and lived at Canton until the time of his death in 1924. His wife died in 1920. Both are buried in Riverside Cemetery, Canton. Mr. Finnegan was a Democrat, a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and belonged to the Grand Army of the Republic. The following children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Finnigan: Margaret, married Cornelius Rich- ardson, lives at Hollister, Calif .; Thomas W., lives at Buffalo, N. John A. Finnigan attended the public schools of Canton, being gradu- ated from Canton High School in 1889. He received the degree of Bachelor of Science at St. Lawrence University in 1893, and then taught school for one term at Parishville, N. Y., where he was also principal. He studied law in the office of Ledyard P. Hale, at that time district attor- ney, and later counsel on the Public Service Commission, and in the sum-

mer of 1896 Mr. Finnigan went to Havana, Cuba as special correspondent for the Chicago United Press and the Watertown Standard. In Septem- ber, 1896, he purchased an interest in the Commercial Advertiser of Can- ton, and became editor. The following year James D. Tracey, founder of the publication died, and at that time Mr. Finnigan became sole owner. It has been one of the leading newspapers of this section since 1873 and has a wide circulation.
On Jan. 17, 1900, Mr. Finnigan was united in marriage with Miss Anna Heffley, the daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Conrad) Heffley, of Berlin, Pa. Both are deceased.
Politically, Mr. Finnigan is an independent Republican. He is a prom- inent member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and belongs to the Club of Canton, Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, and New York State Press Association.
Edmond Hector Harvey .- Among the dependable business men of Tupper Lake is Mr. Harvey, who is proprietor of Harvey's Pharmacy on Park Street. He was born in Pennsylvania, Sept. 9, 1885, the son of Peter and Flora (Grennon) Harvey.
Peter Harvey was born in Quebec, Canada, Oct. 16, 1858. He came to the United States in 1883 and settled in the northern part of Pennsyl- vania, where he had extensive lumber interests. Mr. Harvey was married in 1881 to Miss Flora Grennon, the daughter of Paul Grennon, of Quebec. To them were born nine children, as follows: 1. Edmond Hector, the subject of this sketch. 2. Emily, born June 24, 1887, the widow of Frank Martineau, lives at Tupper Lake. 3. George, born March 28, 1889, a representative of the Prudential Life Insurance Company, lives at Tupper Lake. 4. Olive, born Aug. 21, 1891, married William Penney, an architect and civil engineer, lives at Chicago, Ill. 5. Jennie, born June 26, 1892, the widow of Eugene Austin, Jr., lives at Tupper Lake. 6. Harry, born April 11, 1894, served during the World War and died at the Federal Vet- erans Hospital, Tupper Lake, Dec. 24, 1930. 7. Laura, born April 13, 1896, died in 1925, was the wife of Earl LaRoche, of Tupper Lake. 8. Hazel, born Jan. 28, 1898, married Robert Carothers, lives at Syracuse, N. Y. 9. Eve, born May 28, 1900, married Leslie Cregier, certified public account- ant, lives at Schenectady, N. Y.
Edmond Hector Harvey received his education in the public schools of Tupper Lake, but at an early age left school to work in the lumber camps of northern New York. Later, he became proprietor of the Canadian Hotel at Tupper Lake and in 1913 he purchased the Windsor Hotel, which he managed for six years. Mr. Harvey then became a forest

ranger in the State Department. In 1924 he became associated with Leon C. Monakey as proprietors of a drug store, and after three years, Mr. Harvey became sole owner of the business.
On Aug. 29, 1907, Mr. Harvey was united in marriage with Miss Anna Burke, the daughter of Thomas Burke, of Tupper Lake. Their daughter, Olive, was born May 11, 1918, and attends Tupper Lake High School.
Mr. Harvey is a Republican and for two years held the office of tax collector. He is a member of the Catholic Church, and belongs to the Knights of Columbus, Knights of St. John, B. P. O. Elks, and Rotary Club. He also holds membership in the Tupper Lake Fish and Game Club and Tupper Lake Sports Association.
Benjamin Arthur Muncil .- As president of B. A. Muncil & Son, Inc., of Paul Smiths, Mr. Muncil is widely known among the successful young business men of Franklin County, and is a veteran of the World War. He was born at Paul Smiths, May 20, 1897, the son of Benjamin Arthur and Mamie (Quain) Muncil.
Benjamin Arthur Muncil, deceased, was prominent throughout this section of New York as the founder of the lumber business which bears his name today. He was a native of this county, born at Vermontville, in August, 1867. He left school at the age of 12 years and worked in the lumber camps of the Adirondack region. Later he became a mountain guide. In 1893 Mr. Muncil became interested in building and owned a saw and lumber mill at Paul Smiths, which he successfully operated for 20 years. In 1913 he built a mill at Gabriels, although the greater part of the company's business operations have continued at Paul Smiths. They are wholesale and retail lumber dealers and general contractors. The business was incorporated in 1929 as B. A. Muncil & Son, Inc., with the following officers: B. A. Muncil, president; B. A. Muncil, Jr., vice president; and C. F. Meagher, secretary and treasurer. Upon the death of Mr. Muncil on Dec. 16, 1930, his son succeeded to the presidency. Mr. Muncil is buried in the cemetery of St. John in the Wilderness at Paul Smiths.

Benjamin Arthur Muncil was educated in the public schools of Paul Smiths and Saranac Lake and also attended Albany Business College. He

enlisted for service in the World War in 1918 and served in France with Ambulance Corps No. 14. He returned to this country in June, 1919, and at that time was discharged. He immediately became identified with his father's business interests and as mentioned above became vice president at the date of incorporation in 1929, and president of the concern follow- ing his father's death.
Mr. Muncil was married on Jan. 6, 1924, to Miss Maud Hayes, the daughter of Denton Hayes, of Bloomingdale, N. Y. He was for many years a certified public accountant in New York City and is now deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Muncil have been born three children: 1. Robert, born May 19, 1925. 2. Benjamin A., III, born June 24, 1927. 3. Elizabeth, born Nov. 20, 1929.
Like his father, Mr. Muncil is identified with the Republican party in politics. He has succeeded him as superintendent of highways at Brighton, an office which was held by the father for 15 years. The members of the family are identified with the Catholic Church, and Mr. Muncil is a member of the American Legion.
Welby W. Haile .- Associated with public affairs at Canton for many years, Mr. Haile is prominent as the clerk of St. Lawrence County, which office he has held continuously since 1913, and he is also active in the city's fraternal life. He was born at DeKalb, St. Lawrence County, Oct. 31, 1871, the son of William H. and Viola M. (Scripter) Haile.
William H. Haile was born at DeKalb, July 3, 1840, and his entire life was spent in this section. He was a farmer for several years, and then became interested in the cheese and butter business, as a salesman, in which capacity he served for many years. He was president of the St. Lawrence County Board of Trade for 25 years, and was a Republican in politics. Mr. Haile died Dec. 30, 1927. His wife, born at Herman, N. Y., December 21, 1844, died Dec. 30, 1928. Both are buried at Richville. Mr. Haile was affiliated with Richville Lodge, F. & A. M., and belonged to the Grange. He was a trustee of the Congregational Church. To Mr. and Mrs. Haile were born three children: 1. Lola, married H. N. Williams, de- ceased, and she resides at Gouverneur. 2. Welby W., the subject of this sketch. 3. Melvin H., who lives on the old Haile homestead.
Welby W. Haile received his education in the public schools of DeKalb, and in 1890 was graduated from Richville High School. He spent three years at Potsdam Normal School, and in 1893 came to Canton as recorder in the county clerk's office. He was connected with this department in county administration work until his election in November, 1912, as

county clerk, and as mentioned above, he has held the office to the present time, and has proven a most capable official.
In 1900 Mr. Haile was united in marriage with Miss Louise A. Eld- redge, the daughter of Loyal W. and Clara J. (Cardinal) Eldredge, the former a native of Stockholm and the latter of Colton, N. Y. He is de- ceased and his widow lives at Elmira, N. Y. Mr. and Mrs. Haile have no children.
Mr. Haile is a member of the Universalist Church and has the follow- ing lodge affiliations: St. Lawrence Lodge, F. & A. M. No. 111, Past Master; St. Lawrence District, Past District Deputy ; St. Lawrence Chap- ter R. A. M. No. 32; St. Lawrence Commandery K. T. No. 28, Past Com- mander; Central City Consistory, 32nd degree; Media Temple, Potentate during 1930-31; Karnak Temple, Montreal, Canada, honorary member; Tigris Temple, Syracuse, honorary member; Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Past Noble Grand, Canton Lodge No. 128; St. Lawrence Encamp- ment No. 42, Past Chief Patriarch ; and B. P. O. Elks No. 772, Ogdensburg. He also has served as president of the Canton Advertising Club, director of the Club of Canton and a director of the First National Bank of Canton. He belongs to the St. Lawrence Golf Club.
Edwin Lee Hulett, who has been dean of the College of Letters and Science, St. Lawrence University, since 1915, is a citizen of Canton. He was born at Heuvelton, St. Lawrence County, April 30, 1870, the son of Edwin Henry and Emma C. (Austin) Hulett.
Edwin Henry Hulett, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil War. He was born at Heuvelton, and his wife was a native of DePeyster. He served during the war as a member of the 16th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was an architect and builder and took a prominent part in public affairs at Heuvelton. He held numerous public offices and was president of the board of education. Mr. Hulett died in 1888 and his wife died in 1913. He was a Republican, a member of the Methodist Church, and belonged to the Grand Army of the Republic. His wife was a mem- ber of the Presbyterian Church. Their children were: 1. Morris A., attor- ney, lives in New York City. 2. Edwin Lee, the subject of this sketch. 3. Fannie, married Thomas Dollar, lives at Hamilton. 4. Marian, married Paul Schneider, lives at Frankfort, N. Y. 5. Ralph H., jeweler, lives at Ogdensburg. 6. Sarah, married John Arthur Morris, lives at Ogdensburg.

pleted a course of study at Potsdam Normal School in 1896 and spent the following six years as a teacher at Brushtown, N. Y. During this time he attended the Summer sessions at New York University. He received the degree of Bachelor of Arts at St. Lawrence University in 1903 and the degree of Master of Arts the following year at the same institution. He became an assistant instructor of chemistry at the University in 1903, the following year was made instructor, and in 1905 became a professor. He has been dean since 1915.
Mr. Hulett was united in marriage with Miss Minnie A. Dollar, the daughter of Robert and Ellen (Ritchie) Dollar. Mr. Dollar was born in Ireland and became a prosperous farmer and stockman of St. Lawrence County. His wife was born at Heuvelton. Mr. and Mrs. Hulett have no children.
Politically Mr. Hulett is a Republican. He is a member of the Uni- versalist Church and is affiliated with DePeyster Lodge, F. and A. M. No. 137. He is a trustee of St. Lawrence University Library, a member of the American Chemical Society, Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, and Club of Canton.
Edson A. Martin, who is sheriff of St. Lawrence County, is a member of a well known and highly esteemed family of Canton, where he was born April 15, 1897. He is the son of Albert H. and Ada (Wellman) Martin.
Albert H. Martin was born at Clare, St. Lawrence County, and his wife is a native of Kendall County, Ill. He has been interested in general farming and stock raising throughout his life and lives at Canton. He is a Republican and holds the office of deputy sheriff of St. Lawrence County. He and his family are members of the Methodist Church and he belongs to the Grange. To Mr. and Mrs. Martin were born four children: 1. Edson A., the subject of this sketch. 2. Wayne E. 3. Alberta. 4. Iona. All live at Canton.
Albert H. Martin is the son of Alexander and Jane (Wells) Martin. Alexander Martin served throughout the Civil War and was wounded at the battle of Spottsylvania. He was active in public affairs at Canton and was a Republican. He held membership in the Grand Army of the Republic. Both he and his wife are buried at Canton.
Edson A. Martin received his education in the Canton public schools and after his graduation from high school he entered the employ of the DeGrasse Paper Company, now the International Paper Company, at Pyrites, N. Y. In 1918 Mr. Martin enlisted in the World War and was sent

to Camp Jackson, S. C., where he was assigned to the 25th Replacement Regiment of Field Artillery. While his company was enroute to France the war ended and Mr. Martin was discharged in January, 1919. At that time he resumed his former employment at Pyrites. Mr. Martin came to Canton in March, 1922, and was employed in the office of Sheriff Charles A. Gibson. After three months he became under sheriff and in November, 1924, was elected to the office of sheriff of St. Lawrence County. After three years in office he again was appointed under sheriff in 1928, and in November, 1930, was reelected as sheriff.
In 1925 Mr. Martin married Miss Agnes K. Farrell, the daughter of Dennis and Elizabeth (White) Farrell, the former a native of New York and the latter of Ireland. They live at Canton. Mr. and Mrs. Martin have two children, Edson J. and Jeanne Theresa.
Mr. Martin has always been a Republican. He is an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and is past commander of John C. Peggs Post, No. 67, American Legion. He also belongs to the Club of Canton, St. Lawrence Golf Club, and B. P. O. Elks, No. 772.
Nettie (Earl) Olmstead .- As superintendent of the St. Lawrence County Home, at Canton, Mrs. Olmstead is well known in St. Lawrence County. She was born at Ogdensburg, N. Y., the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Daniels) Earl.
