William Earl was born at North Augusta, Canada, of American par- ents. He became a member of the Ogdensburg police force and for many years was overseer of the poor at Ogdensburg. He died in 1906 and his wife, who was born at Waddington, St. Lawrence County, died in 1925. Both are buried at Ogdensburg. There were eight children born to Mr. and Mrs. Earl: 1. Elisha, who died in 1889, was principal of Morristown High School for many years. 2. John W., lives at Canton. 3. Philena, married Charles Meade, lives at Canton. 4. Grant, lives at Mountain View, N. J. 5. F. D., M. D., lives at Ogdensburg. 6. Nettie, the subject of this sketch. 7. Herbert, deceased. 8. Edgar, deceased.
Nettie Earl attended the public and high schools of Ogdensburg and is a graduate of Ogdensburg Commercial College. She spent five years as stenographer and bookkeeper for the McCormick Harvester Company, at Ogdensburg. She was also employed by Skillings, Whitney & Barnes, lumber dealers, of Ogdensburg. On Jan. 1, 1914, she became matron of the St. Lawrence County Home, and served in that capacity until the death of her husband, March 12, 1921, at which time she took over his duties as superintendent of the poor, being the first woman in the State

of New York to hold an office of this kind. Mrs. Olmsted has proven most capable and efficient and also holds the office of commissioner of public welfare. She is a member of the New York State Association of Social Welfare Officers.
In 1906 Nettie Earl was married to Harlow A. Olmstead, who died in 1921, and is buried at Ogdensburg. He was the son of Lorenzo and Dorothy (Godsell) Olmsted, the former a native of Parishville, St. Law- rence County, and the latter of England. Both are buried at Ogdensburg. Mr. Olmstead had served throughout the Civil War with a company of New York infantry. To Harlow A. and Nettie (Earl) Olmstead were born two daughters: Elizabeth, a graduate of Canton High School, class of 1931, attends St. Lawrence University; and Dorothy, a graduate of Canton High School, class of 1931, attends the New York State School of Agri- culture. Mr. Olmstead was a Republican, a member of the Methodist Church, and belonged to the Masonic Lodge, B. P. O. Elks No. 772, and Knights of Pythias.
Mrs. Olmsted is identified with the Republican party in politics. She is a member of the Methodist Church, Grange, and Order of Eastern Star.
Samuel Daniels, great grandfather of Mrs. Olmstead, served through- out the Revolutionary War, and is buried at Waddington, N. Y.
Major Harold R. DePue, M. D .- An experienced physician and public spirited citizen, Dr. DePue is numbered among the representative profes- sional men of Canton, and is a veteran of the World War. He was born at Great Bend, Susquehanna County, Pa., Feb. 9, 1882, the son of David D. and Caroline (LaToure) DePue.
David D. DePue, a native of France, was brought to this country in infancy and was educated in Pennsylvania, where his parents settled. He became interested in the hotel business and managed hostelries at Great Bend, Athens, Towanda, and Seneca Falls. At the time of his death he was proprietor of the Stanton Hotel at Oneonta, N. Y. Mr. DePue was a Republican, a member of the Episcopal Church and a 32nd degree Mason, His wife was born at New Orleans, La. Both are buried at Binghamton, N. Y. Their only child was Harold R., the subject of this sketch.
Harold R. DePue was educated in private schools and during his col- lege career attended the University of Vermont from which he received the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1911. He was an interne at Baccus Hospital, Norwich, Conn., took graduate work at Lying-In Hospital, New York City, and in 1913 established a private practice at Princeton, Maine.

Dr. DePue was called into the service during the World War as a first lieutenant in the Medical Corps. He was assigned to the transport ship, U. S. S. Santa Rosa as medical officer in charge, and made seven trips between the United States and France. He was then promoted to the rank of captain and in November, 1918, was given charge of the medical depart- ment of the Signal Corps camp at Jersey City, N. J. He was discharged with the rank of major in September, 1919, and now holds that commis- sion in the U. S. Army Medical Reserve Corps.
In 1919 Dr. DePue established a practice at Calais, Maine, and in 1925 he became surgeon for the St. Croix Paper Company at Woodland, Maine. Dr. DePue established a private practice at Canton in January, 1931. He has taken graduate work at the Post Graduate Hospital, New York City, and the Dr. Strauss Clinic, in Chicago. He is identified with the St. Lawrence County, New York State, and American Medical associations.
In 1914 Dr. DePue married Miss Mildred McGibbon, the daughter of Arthur McGibbon, of Woodstock, N. B. He is an engineer on the Canadian Pacific Railroad. Doctor and Mrs. DePue are the parents of two sons, David and John.
Dr. DePue has always been independent in politics. He is a member of the Episcopal Church and is affiliated with Round Hill Lodge, F. and A. M .; Calais Chapter, R. A. M. and Calais Commandery, K. T. He is past commander of the American Legion Post at Calais, Maine.
Leon G. Crary .- One of the leading attorneys of St. Lawrence County is Leon G. Crary, who has engaged in practice at Canton for almost 30 years, and he has served as justice of the peace since 1921. He was born in this city, Jan. 20, 1876, the son of Elias and Mary (Middleton) Crary.
Elias Crary was born at Potsdam and during his early life was a school teacher. He later engaged in farming and was successful as a dairyman. He died in 1895 and is buried at Potsdam. His wife, born at Lisbon, St. Lawrence County, died in 1911. Mr. Crary was a Republican and held membership in the Presbyterian Church. There were two sons born to Mr. and Mrs. Crary: 1. Silas, lives at Canton. 2. Leon G., the subject of this sketch.
In 1895 Leon G. Crary was graduated from Canton High School. He received the degree of Bachelor of Arts at Cornell University in 1889, and during 1901-02 studied at the Albany Law School. During that time he also was a clerk in the State House at Albany. After his admission to

the New York bar in June, 1903, Mr. Crary located at Canton, where he was associated in practice with the late Major H. D. Ellsworth. Mr. Crary has offices at 67 Main Street. He is a member of the St. Lawrence County Bar Association.
In 1911 Mr. Crary married (first) Miss Leta Maybee, who died in 1914. She was the daughter of Joseph and Ella Maybee, who were natives of Mexico, Oswego County. He married (second) Miss Marie A. Becker in 1917.
Mr. Crary is a Republican and a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Richard Eddy Sykes, B. S., M. S., D. D .- One of the most outstanding figures in educational realms in the North Country is Doctor Sykes, who is president of St. Lawrence University, at Canton. He was born in the town of Canton, Jan. 3, 1861, the son of Edwin Jones and Louise (Brewer) Sykes. Edwin Jones Sykes was a successful farmer and with the excep- tion of a few years, spent his entire life on the farm. Both he and his wife are deceased.
Dr. Richard Eddy Sykes was educated in the public and high schools of Canton and was graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1883, with the degree of Bachelor of Science. Upon the completion of the academic course he then pursued his theological training in the Theological School of St. Lawrence University, and was graduated in 1885. He received the degree of Master of Science in 1887 and the degree of Doctor of Divinity in 1906. He was ordained in 1885 as a Universalist minister, and spent 34 years in church work, serving as pastor at Little Falls, Herkimer County, N. Y., Denver, Colo., and Malden, Mass. On May 1, 1919, Doctor Sykes received the appointment as president of St. Lawrence University.
In his work at the University, Doctor Sykes has met with marked suc- cess and is deservedly popular. During 1922-25 he successfully carried out campaigns to secure an endowment of $1,000,000.
Doctor Sykes holds membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Theta Pi fraternities, University Club of Malden, Mass., Club of Canton, and Masonic Lodge.
On Oct. 18, 1887, Doctor Sykes was united in marriage with Miss Mabel Houghton, the daughter of Byron Knight and Emma (Gay) Hough- ton. They are the parents of two daughters: 1. Dorothy Louise, born March 4, 1892, married Felix Morse Frederiksen. 2. Elizabeth Blanche, born Sept. 19, 1899, married Ralph Harold Michaels.

Gilbert A. Ball .- As principal of Morristown High School, Mr. Ball is widely known in educational circles in St. Lawrence County. He was born at Theresa, N. Y., June 3, 1901, the son of Thomas E. and Clara E. (Parker) Ball.
Thomas E. Ball is a leading citizen of Jefferson County, and a com- plete sketch of him may be found elsewhere in this history.
After his graduation from Theresa High School in 1919, Gilbert A. Ball taught school for three years in the Hyde Lake District, at Plessis, and in the Piper District, all in Jefferson County. In 1922 he entered St. Lawrence University, from which he received the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1926. In that year he was appointed assistant principal and science teacher at Canton High School, and he remained there until Sep- tember, 1928, at which time he came to Morristown. He is identified with the Franklin and St. Lawrence Teachers Association, New York State Teachers Association, New York State Principals Association, New York State Science Teachers Association, and Chairman of the Science Section of the Northern Zone.
In 1927 Mr. Ball married Miss Mary Jane Keller, the daughter of Fred and Imogene Keller, who are residents of Bangor, N. Y. Mr. and Mrs. Ball have two daughters, Zoe Ann, and Florence Elizabeth.
Mr. Ball is a Republican, and belongs to St. Lawrence Lodge F. and A. M. No. 111.
John E. Swarts, M. D .- Among the able young physicians and sur- geons of St. Lawrence County may be mentioned Doctor Swarts, of Can- ton, who is a veteran of the World War. He was born at Goderich, Ontario, Canada, May 19, 1896, the son of Thomas and Jennie (McDonald) Swarts.
Thomas Swarts and his wife were born in Canada at London and Goderich, respectively. They are now residents of Goderich, and for many years Mr. Swarts has been successful as a dealer in horses, having government contracts for their sale. He also is interested in the automo- bile and taxi business. Mr. and Mrs. Swarts are members of the Presby- terian Church. Their children are: 1. Guy, deceased. 2. Thomas, de- ceased. 3. John E., the subject of this sketch. 4. Ernest, deceased. 5. Isabel, deceased.
After his graduation from the public schools, John E. Swarts attended Goderich Collegiate Institute in 1911. He received the degree of Doctor of Medicine at Queens College in 1919, and during the following year was an interne at Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal. He then practiced at

Sudbury, Ontario, during 1920-22, and spent from 1922 until 1925 as an interne in Broad Street Hospital, New York City. For one year Dr. Swarts practiced medicine in New York City, and in 1926 located at Chazy. Three years later he established offices at Pyrites, St. Lawrence County. He has been located in Canton since September, 1930.
In 1925 Dr. Swarts was united in marriage with Miss Amanda Goe, the daughter of Harry Goe, of Clarksburg, W. Va. He is district super- intendent of the Standard Oil Company. Doctor and Mrs. Swarts have two children, Thomas and Betty.
In 1915 Dr. Swarts enlisted in the Canadian army for service in the World War and was attached to Queen's Medical Corps throught the war period.
Dr. Swarts is identified with the St. Lawrence County, New York State, and American Medical Associations. He also holds membership in the Club of Canton and the St. Lawrence Golf Club.
James Grover Crawford, who is vice president and treasurer of James V. Crawford, Inc., is one of Morristown's most progressive business men, and is a veteran of the World War. He was born in this city, Sept. 27, 1888, the son of James V. and Agnes (Colburn) Crawford.
James V. Crawford, deceased, was the founder of the business which bears his name, and for many years was a leader in the business and civic life of Morristown. He was born at Edwardsville, N. Y., spent his boy- hood on his father's farm, and as a young man came to Morristown as a clerk in the general store of Albert Proctor. Later he became associated with William D. Seeley, as proprietors of a general mercantile establish- ment, and the firm of Crawford & Seeley continued for several years. Mr. Crawford then purchased his partner's interest and the business was incorporated in 1913 with Mr. Crawford as president. He was serving in that capacity at the time of his death, Sept. 30, 1921. His wife was born at Morristown and died in 1900. Both are buried in this city. Mr. Crawford was also one of the founders of the Frontier National Bank of Morristown and became its first president. He also held that office until his death. During the presidency of Grover Cleveland Mr. Crawford served as postmaster and again was appointed to that office during the administration of Woodrow Wilson. He was a Democrat in politics and took an active interest in local affairs. He served as justice of the peace. Mr. Crawford was a trustee of the Presbyterian Church, was past master of Black Lake Lodge, F. and A. M., No. 319, and belonged to the Knights

of Pythias and Independent Order of Foresters. The only child born to Mr. and Mrs. Crawford was James Grover, the subject of this sketch.
In 1909 James Grover Crawford was graduated from Morristown High School. He received the degree of Bachelor of Science at Syracuse Uni- versity in 1913, and at that time was elected treasurer of the James V. Crawford Company, Inc. In 1918 Mr. Crawford was inducted into service for the World War and was sent to Fort Hancock, N. J., where he was assigned to the 22nd Coast Artillery. After his discharge he resumed his former position and upon the death of his father in 1921 Mr. Crawford became vice president and treasurer. He is also a director of the Frontier National Bank.
In 1916 Mr. Crawford was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Campbell, the daughter of George and Myrtle (Edgerley) Campbell, na- tives of New York. Both are deceased and are buried at Alexandria Bay. To Mr. and Mrs. Crawford have been born two daughters: Ruth Ellen, born in October, 1920; Jane Elizabeth, born in December, 1924.
Mr. Crawford is a Democrat and is serving as justice of the peace and village trustee. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church and belongs to Black Lake Lodge, F. and A. M. No. 319; Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, and American Legion.
Lee R. Smith .- Among the most successful business men of Hammond is Lee R. Smith, who is cashier of the Citizens National Bank. He was born in this city, April 18, 1882, the son of John A. and Cora (Stark- weather) Smith.
Both John A. Smith and his wife were natives of Hammond. Until 1908 he was interested in general farming and stock raising. He served as superintendent of highways for many years and died in 1923. His wife died in 1915. They are buried at Morristown. Mr. Smith was a Democrat, a member of the First Congregational Church, and belonged to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, being past noble grand. To John A. and Cora (Starkweather) Smith was born one child, Lee R., the subject of this sketch. Mr. Smith was married (second) to Mrs. Celia S. Wiggins. She died in 1921 and is buried at Canton, N. Y.
Lee R. Smith received his education in the Hammond public schools and in 1903 was graduated from Potsdam Normal School. For a time he was a clerk in the store of Haller & Jones, of Watertown. In 1906 he became manager of his father's farm and ten years later was appointed postmaster of Hammond, which office he held from April, 1916, until February, 1922. He has been cashier of the Citizens National Bank since

March, 1922, and in 1930 was president of the St. Lawrence County Bankers Association.
In 1907 Mr. Smith was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth John- ston, the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Johnston. The former is deceased and the latter resides at Hammond. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have two children: 1. Robert J., a graduate of Hammond High School, attends St. Lawrence University, class of 1932, and member of Sigma Pi frater- nity. 2. Frances E., a student.
Mr. Smith is a Democrat, a member of the Presbyterian Church, and belongs to Hammond Lodge, F. and A. M. No. 861, and Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Past Noble Grand.
Capt. Matthew M. Farrell .- One of the solid business men of Morris- town is Capt. Farrell, who is president of the Brockville-Morristown Transportation Company. He was born at Maitland, Ontario, Sept. 10, 1880, the son of Thomas and Bridget (Burns) Farrell.
Thomas Farrell was a native of County Kildare and his wife was born in County Carlow, Ireland. Their marriage took place at Prescott, Ont. Almost his entire life was spent as a farmer. He died in 1897 and his wife died in 1919. They are buried at Brockville. Mr. and Mrs. Farrell were members of St. Mark's Catholic Church. They were the parents of 14 children: 1. James, who died in 1924, was immigrant inspector for the U. S. government at Morristown for 20 years. 2. John, lives at Brock- ville, Ont. 3. Rose, the widow of Edward Kuhlman, lives at Atlanta, Ga. 4. Anna, the widow of George Brown, lives at Buffalo, N. Y. 5. Catherine, married William Kelly, lives at Brockville, Ont. 6. Thomas, lives at Indianapolis, Ind. 7. Capt. Patrick, retired lake captain, lives at Buffalo. 8. Timothy, marine engineer, lives at Buffalo. 9. Matthew M. Farrell attended the public schools of Maitland. He re- mained on his father's farm until 1897 and in that year went to Oswe- gatchie, N. Y., to enter the cheese manufacturing business with his brother. Later he became an attendant at the Ogdensburg State Hospital. He became a sailor on the Great Lakes and after his promotion to first mate he became identified with the Brockville-Morristown Transportation Company as president. In 1924 he returned to Morristown and at that time received his master's papers. He became master of the Elmer W.

Jones in 1925, and still serves in that capacity. This vessel is owned by the Brockville-Morristown Transportation Company.
Mr. Farrell is a Republican, holds membership in St. John's Catholic Church, and belongs to the Knights of Columbus, Ogdensburg Council.
LeRoy J. Stiles .- Active and progressive in business, Mr. Stiles is prominent in Hammond as proprietor of a hardware business. He was born here May 15, 1889, the son of William T. and Harriet (Inglas) Stiles. A sketch of William T. Stiles appears elsewhere in this history.
After his graduation from Hammond High School in 1909, LeRoy J. Stiles attended Albany Business School. His entire business career has been identified with the hardware business which was established by his father, and he has owned the store since 1921.
In 1915 Mr. Stiles married Miss Harriet Harland, who died July 29, 1924. She was the daughter of Henry Harland, who is deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Stiles were born two daughters: Beulah Jean and Harriet Jane.
Mr. Stiles is a Republican, a member of the Methodist Church, and is affiliated with Hammond Lodge, F. and A. M. No. 861; Ogdensburg Chap- ter, R. A. M. No. 63; and Ogdensburg Commandery, K. T. No. 54. He also belongs to the New York State and National Hardware Dealers Asso- ciations.
William T. Stiles, retired, has taken a prominent part in the business life of Hammond for many years and is a representative citizen of St. Lawrence County. He was born at Buffalo, N. Y., Dec. 28, 1852, the son of Andrew and Harriet (Inglas) Stiles.
Andrew Stiles was born in Buffalo and his wife was a native of LeRoy, Jefferson County. He was a blacksmith by trade. Mr. Stiles died in 1852 and his wife died in 1906. They were members of the Methodist Church. Their children were: 1. Sarah A., married James Simmons, both deceased. 2. Fidelia, deceased. 3. William T., the subject of this sketch. Harriet (Inglas) Stiles was the daughter of Jonathan Inglas, who was a well known farmer of Jefferson County. He was born at LeRoy and is buried at Antwerp, N. Y.
At the age of three years William T. Stiles was taken to Antwerp, N. Y., by his mother, and he was educated in the public schools there. At an early age he sought employment and learned the tinner's trade in the shop of J. D. Garnham. In November, 1871, Mr. Stiles came to Hammond and established a business as a tinner. Five years later he built a large

hardware store and was identified with this business until his retirement in 1921. The business is now conducted by his son, Leroy J. Stiles. In 1908 Mr. Stiles was active in the organization of the Citizens Telephone Company, and he disposed of his interests in June, 1928.
Mr. Stiles was married (first) in 1876 to Miss Helen Taylor, who died in 1900. She was the daughter of Morgan and Hannah Taylor, who were natives of New York. Mr. Taylor was a Civil War veteran. To William T. and Helen (Taylor) Stiles were born three children: 1. Andrew M., lives at Auburn, N. Y. He married Miss Gussie Jepson, and they have three children, Helen, William and Betsy. 2. Mollie A., married Fred W. Roger, lives at Potsdam. They have two children, Malcolm and Andrew. 3. Leroy J., a sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this history. Mr. Stiles married (second) Miss Lottie A. Frasier, the daughter of Embert Frasier, a retired farmer, of Hammond. Mr. and Mrs. Stiles have a daughter, Harriet Ruth, who is the wife of Waldron C. Cronk, of Brooklyn, N. Y. They have a daughter, Elsie.
Mr. Stiles is a Republican and held the office of town clerk for eight years. He is an active member of the Methodist Church of which he is trustee and steward.
Thomas A. Lewis, M. D .- Among the prominent physicians and sur- geons of St. Lawrence County is Dr. Lewis, of Hammond, who is also president of the Citizens National Bank. He was born in Matilda Town- ship, Ontario, Dec. 3, 1871, the son of Edmund and Rachel (Webb) Lewis.
Edmund Lewis lives retired at Iroquois, Ontario. He spent many years as a successful farmer and stockman and was interested in dairying. Both he and his wife were born in Ontario, and she is deceased. Mr. Lewis holds membership in the Anglican Church and is a Conservative in politics. He has served as road commissioner. To Mr. and Mrs. Lewis were born two children: 1. Thomas A., the subject of this sketch. 2. Alberta, married Herbert Coons, lives in Montreal.
Thomas A. Lewis obtained his early education in the district schools and in 1889 was graduated from Iroquois High School. He taught school for three terms and later entered Trinity University in Toronto, from which he received the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1897. The follow- ing year he came to New York and located at Norfolk. He removed to Edwardsville in 1903 and since 1907 has engaged in private practice at Hammond. Dr. Lewis has been president of the St. Lawrence County Medical Society, and is a member of the New York State Medical Society and American Medical Association.

In 1897 Dr. Lewis married Miss Belle Elliott, the daughter of William and Mary Elliott, natives of Scotland. Both are deceased and are buried at Winchester, Ont. To Doctor and Mrs. Lewis were born two sons: 1. Edmund E., who is secretary and treasurer of Lewis & Lewis, Inc., Ham- mond. He married Miss Hazel Collier. 2. Thomas A., Jr., who is presi- dent of Lewis & Lewis, Inc. He married Miss Margaret Madlin.
Since 1921 Dr. Lewis has been president and director of the Citizens National Bank of Hammond.
Politically Dr. Lewis is a Republican. He is an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and has the following Lodge affiliations: Hammond Lodge, F. and A. M. No. 861, past master; past district deputy grand master; Ogdensburg Chapter, R. A. M .; Ogdensburg Commandery, K. T., and Media Temple.
Fred Everett Graves, M. D .- Since 1888 Doctor Graves has success- fully engaged in the practice of medicine at Brier Hill, and he is recognized as one of the thoroughly competent physicians and surgeons of St. Law- rence County. He was born at Antwerp, Jefferson County, Jan. 1, 1865, the son of Joseph F. and Lydia L. (Bent) Graves.
