Joseph F. Graves was a native of New York, and spent his life as a farmer. He was living retired at the time of his death in 1909. His wife, born at Croghan, Lewis County, died in 1909. Both are buried at Antwerp. Mr. Graves was a Democrat and served as town assessor. He was a trustee of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and belonged to the Grange. There were five children born to Mr. and Mrs. Graves, as follows: 1. George, lives at Antwerp. 2. Erwin, who died in 1929. 3. Adelaide, mar- ried Gilbert Eggleston, lives at Theresa. 4. Fred Everett, the subject of this sketch. 5. Ernest, lives at Oxbow, N. Y.
The early life of Fred Everett Graves was spent at Antwerp, where he attended the public schools. In 1884 he was graduated from Ives Sem- inary, and four years later completed a course at the Hahnemann Medical College, Chicago, where he received the degree of Doctor of Medicine. His entire professional career has been spent at Brier Hill in St. Lawrence County, and he has an excellent practice. Doctor Graves has been local health officer for 30 years, and holds membership in the St. Lawrence County Medical Society, and New York State Medical Society.
In 1890 Doctor Graves was married (first) to Miss Jessie F. Smith, who died in 1893. She is buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Hammond. She was the daughter of Robert and Janet (Riddell) Smith, who were natives of New York. He was married (second) in 1903 to Miss Lillian

S. Moore, the daughter of Thomas J. and Mary (Flynn) Moore, of New York. Mr. Moore died in 1931. His wife is also deceased. Doctor and Mrs. Graves are the parents of three daughters: 1. Doris, married Elmer King, lives at Hammond. 2. Gloria, a graduate of Brier Hill High School and St. Lawrence University, class of 1929, now a teacher at Brier Hill High School. 3. Barbara M., a student.
Politically, Doctor Graves is a Republican. He is president of the board of education, of which he has been a member for 21 years. He holds membership in the Congregational Church, and belongs to the Inde- pendent Order of Odd Fellows, and Independent Order of Foresters.
Elmer D. Craig, who is successfully engaged in the general mercantile business at Hammond, is also holding the office of town clerk. He was born at Lisbon, St. Lawrence County, Dec. 5, 1881, the son of Henry B. and Catherine (Forsythe) Craig.
Henry B. Craig, who died in 1925, was a native of Lisbon, where he is buried. He was a farmer and carpenter and in 1921 retired and moved to Hammond. Mr. Craig was a Republican and served as road commissioner. He was an elder of the United Presbyterian Church and belonged to the Grange. His widow resides at Hammond. To Mr. and Mrs. Craig were born two sons: Elmer D., the subject of this sketch; and Howard G., Chevrolet dealer, lives at Potsdam, N. Y.
Elmer D. Craig attended the Lisbon public schools and is a graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy and Rochester Business Institute. For a time he clerked in the store of H. Alvord at Scott, N. Y., and later was shipping clerk in the employ of F. H. Cobb & Co., wholesale grocers, of Cortland. He returned to his father's farm in 1911 and remained there for ten years. Mr. Craig has been a resident of Hammond since Oct. 27, 1921, and in November of that year purchased the business of W. J. Ireton, general merchant. He greatly improved the business and has established an ex- cellent trade. Since 1929 he has owned the building in which his store is located.
In 1911 Mr. Craig was united in marriage with Miss Laura Gray, the daughter of William John and Margaret (Brown) Gray, of Lisbon. Both are deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Craig have been born two children: Roger B., attends Hammond High School, member of the class of 1932; and Virginia L., a student.
Mr. Craig has always been a Republican and has held the office of town clerk continuously since 1923. He is an elder of the Presbyterian Church and is senior warden of Hammond Lodge, F. and A. M. No. 861.

Arnold D. Northrop .- As principal of Hammond High School, Mr. Northrop is well and favorably known throughout St. Lawrence County. He was born at Lyme, Jefferson County, July 1, 1898, the son of Bright and Julia (Coughlin) Northrop.
Bright Northrop, who is the owner of a well improved farm of 186 acres in Jefferson County, is a native of Lyme. His wife was born in County Wicklow, Ireland. The Northrop homestead is located near Three Mile Bay. He is a Republican, a member of the Methodist Church and belongs to the Modern Woodmen of the World, and the Grange. Mr. and Mrs. Northrop have three children: 1. Arnold D., the subject of this sketch. 2. Albert, director of physical education, Elmira Heights (N. Y.) High School. 3. Mary, married Theodore Klock, lives at Lyme.
Arnold D. Northrop attended the district school of Lyme, and in 1916 was graduated from Three Mile Bay High School. He then studied auto- mobile mechanics in Detroit, Mich., after which he owned and operated a garage business at Three Mile Bay. From September, 1923, until June, 1928, Mr. Northrop taught school at Depauville, and in the latter year came to Hammond as principal of the high school. He attends the summer sessions of St. Lawrence University and is a member of the St. Lawrence County and New York State Teachers Association, and the New York State Principals Association.
In 1925 Mr. Northrop married Miss Myrtle Armstrong, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Cummings) Armstrong, natives of Canada. He is deceased and his widow resides at Depauville.
Mr. Northrop is a member of the Methodist Church and belongs to Depauville Lodge, F. and A. M. Politically he is a Republican. He is president of the Hammond Free Library.
Mark J. Balmat .- One of the progressive young business men of Her- mon is Mark J. Balmat, who is also postmaster. He was born at Fuller- ville, St. Lawrence County, March 19, 1898, the son of Frank L. and Bertha M. (Jones) Balmat.
Frank L. Balmat, who died Aug. 5, 1929, was a representative citizen and substantial business man of Hermon. He was born at Fullerville and as a young man clerked in the store of Charles Carr. Later he pur- chased the business and also owned a hotel at Fullerville. He disposed of his interests there in 1906 and at that time purchased the general mer- cantile establishment of J. B. Ryel, at Hermon. He was actively identified with that enterprise until his death, and was also owner and proprietor of the hotel here. Mr. Balmat was a Democrat, a member of the Episcopal

Church, and belonged to Richville Lodge, F. and A. M., and B. P. O. Elks, No. 772. Bertha M. (Jones) Balmat was born at Carthage, N. Y. Since the death of her husband she has continued his business interests at Hermon. She is Past Matron of Hermon Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and Past District Deputy. To Mr. and Mrs. Balmat were born three chil- dren: 1. Lewis, deceased. 2. Margaret. 3. Mark J., the subject of this sketch.
Mark J. Balmat attended the public schools of Fullerville and Hermon, being a member of the graduating class of 1918 at Hermon High School. He also attended St. Lawrence University and during the World War was a member of the Student Army Training Corps. He is a graduate of Cen- tral City Business College, and for a time clerked in the First National Bank of Hermon. In 1920 he became associated with his father's busi- ness and has been manager of the store since 1921. He has held the office of postmaster since 1923.
In 1920 Mr. Balmat was united in marriage with Miss Anita Nadon, the daughter of Richard and Eva Nadon, natives of Buckingham, Ont. They live at Hermon. Mr. and Mrs. Balmat have a son, John.
Mr. Balmat holds membership in the Episcopal Church and belongs to the Masonic Lodge and American Legion. Politically he is a Republi- can. He also belongs to the New York State League of District Post- masters and National League of District Postmasters.
Charles T. Henderson, M. D .- The medical profession of St. Lawrence County has no more capable and progressive member than Dr. Henderson, who has engaged in practice at Gouverneur for the past twenty years. He was born at Syracuse, N. Y., Aug. 9, 1879, the son of Charles H. and Helen C. (Borden) Henderson.
Charles H. Henderson was born at Otisco, N. Y., in 1851 and his wife was born at Wolcott, N. Y., in 1853. He was a machinist by trade and as a young man was employed by the Sibley & Gould Manufacturing Com- pany of Seneca Falls, N. Y. He became an expert tool maker and spent 20 years in the shops of the New York Central Railroad at Syracuse. Later he was with the Solvay Process Company, and for a time was identified with the experimental laboratories of C. E. Lype, in Syracuse. He was a Democrat and held membership in the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Henderson died in 1924 and his wife died in 1920. They are buried in Onondaga Hill, N. Y. To Mr. and Mrs. Henderson were born eight chil- dren: 1. Charles T., the subject of this sketch. 2. Nelson H., mechanical engineer, lives at Syracuse. 3. Ethel, married Albert Mansfield, lives at

Charles H. Henderson was the son of Hiram H. and Adeline (Smith) Henderson. He was a native of Onondaga County, and his wife was born near Geneva, N. Y. They are buried at Onondaga Hill.
Charles T. Henderson attended the Central High School in Syracuse. He was a member of the class of engineering at the Syracuse University in 1906, and received the degree of Doctor of Medicine at the same institu- tion in 1911. After serving as interne in St. Luke's Hospital, Dr. Hender- son came to Gouverneur to engage in general practice. He is a member of the staff and Roentgenologist of Stephen Van Duzee Hospital.
In 1907 Dr. Henderson married Miss Blanche Allen, the daughter of A. H. and Libbie (Cheney) Allen, the former a native of Lewis County, and the latter of Jefferson County. Dr. Allen was a prominent physician and surgeon of Gouverneur, where he spent 40 years in successful practice. He later was located at Watertown and died there in 1924. Both he and his wife are buried at Gouverneur. To Doctor and Mrs. Henderson have been born four children: 1. Helen, a graduate of Gouverneur High School and the School of Nursing, Syracuse University, class of 1929. She is now connected with Stephen Van Duzee Hospital. 2. Robert, attended St. Lawrence University, now a medical student at Syracuse University. 3. Belle, a student. 4. Grace, a graduate of Gouverneur High School, class of 1931.
Dr. Henderson has been treasurer of St. Lawrence County Medical Society for 18 years and holds membership in the New York State Medical Society, American Medical Association, and the American Society of School Physicians. He is a Republican, a member of Gouverneur Lodge, F. and A. M. No. 217; Independent Order of Foresters; Phi Beta Pi and Alpha Omega Alpha fraternities. He and his family are prominent mem- bers of the Presbyterian Church.
