INTRODUCTORY.
In presenting to the public our Sixth Annual Directory of the city of Cleveland, for 1876-77, there appears to us to be little necessity for extended remarks, by way of pre- face or introduction, our relations with the public in this particular work being well established, and we have reason to know, appreciatively recognized. Experience, indus- trious application, and patient care, are the conditions to the attainment of the greatest practicable perfection in a work of this character. In six years we have not failed to gain largely of the first essential, while nothing has been wanting to the fullest employ- ment of the others. We therefore feel free to speak of our Directory as comparing fa- vorably in general thoroughness, accuracy, convenience of arrangement, and typograph- ical appearance, with any issued in the country.
We invite particular attention to the map of the city accompanying the Directory. This map was prepared with the greatest possible care, from the latest surveys by the city engineer, and will be found complete and perfectly accurate in every detail. It embraces all the new streets laid out under the late act of the Council, conspicuously defines the boundaries of the wards, shows the location of the projected breakwater, and is supplied with an index of the streets, alphabetically arranged, by which the in- quirer may readily ascertain the location of each. In all other respects this map of Cleveland is the most thorough ever published.
A carefully prepared Directory is the most trustworthy source from which to obtain the figures of population. This work contains 46,923 names, which multiplied by 312, the generally received method of computation, gives 164,230 as the present total number of inhabitants of the city. This is a very small increase upon the population at the date of the issue of our last preceding Directory, but in view of all the circumstances con- ducing to the depletion of population, there is abundant cause for gratulation in the fact that Cleveland has suffered no retrograde in this respect during the year.
For the information of the curious, we give upon the following page in tabular form the number of names occurring in each letter of the alphabet-also the number of co-partnerships and incorporated companies :
In conclusion, we desire to express to our subscribers and the business community our cordial acknowledgments for the support accorded us, which we refer to as gratify- ing evidence of the acceptability of our previous efforts to give Cleveland a trustworthy Directory. Confidently looking forward to another year which shall bring with it increased prosperity to our beautiful city, we submit our present work to the careful examination and candid judgment of the public.
Respectfully, ROBISON, SAVAGE & CO.
