CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS

Conference Proceedings

Mrs. James K. Wagner, pianist played the preludes: "A Prayer" by Tchaikovsky and "Largo" by Handel as the people assembled.

At 10:00 o'clock Bishop F. Gerald Hensley convened the Conference de- claring; "I hereby call to order the one hundredth sixty-first annual session of the Ohio Miami Conference."

Rev. Milford Ater led the Conference in the singing of the hymn; "And Are We Yet Alive" and Rev. Harvey C. Hahn prayed the invocation.

Bishop Ensley challenged the Conference with his devotional message on the theme "Remember." He said the most important need of the church at this time is vitality not unity. Vitality and union do not always go together. The word, "remember" sounds like a bell in the Scriptures. The way to a vital union of the churches is to remember certain things out of the past. There is a kind of remembrance that blocks every effort to unite the church. There is another kind of memory that makes for union. We need to forget who we are, but at the same time remember certain things we have in common.

1 .- We have a common Lord, one God and Father of us all. 2 .- We have a common history as Protestants and as Christians. We belong to one stem; we are children of the great awakening. 3 .- We have a common Bible. 4 .- We enjoy a common worship. It will help us as we enter into the larger fellowship if we remember who we are and what we have been. This is not a union of denominations, but a reunion of God's people. 5 .- We have common sins. 6 .- We have a common need of the divine grace. Our memories will translate them- selves into strength as we remember these things.

Maurice Gribler read the names of those who have joined the Church Triumphant during the Conference year and asked the Conference to stand for a moment of silent tribute and of prayer. The tributes prepared will be found in Report No. 3.
