PREFACE.
-
The publisher, in presenting the ELEVENTH annual issue of WILLIAMS' INCINNATI DIRECTORY to subscribers, gratefully returns his thanks to the friends ho have so long continued to patronize his publication. Although the labor has been reat, and the profit thus far derived to the publisher inconsiderable, compared to that ielded from any of the ordinary pursuits of life, the compiler looks with some degree f satisfaction and pride to the result of his past labors. At the commencement of the ublication, he did not expect to accumulate riches, but anticipated only to derive herefrom a reasonable support, and if this hope has only been partially realized, he as yet the satisfaction to believe that he has contributed somewhat to the advancement nd prosperity of the "Queen City," by the facilities it has afforded to those engaged the various branches of mechanical, mercantile, and professional business.
From a volume containing about 21,000 names, the Cincinnati Directory, whilst nder his charge, has grown to a work of 500 pages, containing nearly 58,000 names citizens.
There is, probably, no literary enterprise which is surrounded with so many obstacles to its successful prosecution as that of a complete directory for a populous city. hat errors have occurred in preceding volumes, and that names of citizens have metimes been omitted, the publisher freely admits. From the nature of such works, e directory of no city is, or can be, perfect, but the compiler feels that he can justly aim that he has exercised all possible care and diligence to render the work reliable.
We find it impossible at this time to give our patrons such a Post Office List as ould be satisfactory to either them or ourselves, owing to causes with which the ablic are unhappily cognizant. We will, however, as soon as practicable, prepare d issue one.
The public are the proper judges to decide on the merits of our work, and the actical tests to which it will be daily submitted by them, will determine its value, fix character, and demonstrate how far we have succeeded. To their verdict we will eerfully submit.

Street Directory.
This Street Directory is simply an alphabetical arrangement of the Streets, Alleys, etc., with a sufficient portion of the corner numbers attached to each to make it a means by which citizens may become familiar with the system of numbering, and it will be found by them, as well as strangers, to be a practical guide to the different parts of the city, as far as it has yet been numbered.
EXPLANATIONS .- On all streets commencing at and running directly from the river the odd numbers are on the West, and the even on the East side of the street, commencing at the River. On all streets crossing Main, the odd numbers are on the South, and the even on the North side of the street, commencing at and running East and West from Main, thus dividing each into two distinct streets, distinguished by prefixing East and West to the name. A few instances occur, where two streets have the same name-generally one of them in the suburbs, not numbered. A * is affixed to the one at present of the least conse- quence, to designate it.
It was thought unnecessary to give the corner number on both sides, where streets crossed. The odd ones are used in all cases, except where they (without crossing) proceed from, or come to, the one upon which the numbers are designated.
