CINCINNATI ADVERTISEMENTS ..
DODGE'S PATENT IMPROVEMENT IN GRATES AND STOVES.
IT PRODUCES DOUBLE THE HEAT WITH HALF THE FUEL.
It is simple, efficient, and practicable ; saving fuel, radiating the heat into the room instead of allowing it to pass up the chimney ; suppressing the cold draught of air through the room, to the fire, and is as good for Woon as for COAL.
Over 50,000 Persons are now using this Patent, with entire satisfaction. All who value Economy, Comfort, or Health, should adopt It at once.
We have procured a Patent in England, after its merits were thoroughly tested. When we consider that open fires are universally used there, (even the poorest having too much regard for health to use a close stove) and that hundreds of scientific men have been trying for the last fifty years, to make improvements, by which fuel might be saved, and heat increased, we conclude that no stronger arguments in favor of its merits, could be used, than that England had granted a Patent. We are prepared to sell COUNTY and STATE RIGHTS, on the most favorable terms.
READ THE FOLLOWING STARTLING FACTS,
Taken from the Southern Medical Journal, of July, 1560,
And you will be convinced of the importance of perfect ventilation, and nothing but an open fire will accomplish it, and no open fire except DODGE'S PATENT can heat a room in every part, and keep the temperature at the same degree.
HEALTH! is the greatest blessing man can have, and he that neglects to secure any conve- nience which will assist to preserve it, commits a great wrong against himself.
"WARMING HOUSES WITH CLOSED STOVES AND FURNACES .- Closed Stoves produce the least possible amount of ventilation hy draught; indeed it is inappreciable; hence the air in a room so heated is stagnant, and constantly becomes more loaded and poisoned with the twenty-eight cubic inches of carbonic acid gas, and the equal amount (by weight,) of decaying pu- trescent particles of animal matter, either solid or fluid. which are exhaled from the lungs and skin of each adult person every minute, and mingle with the surrounding air. which must accumulate more and more, hour after hour, in proportion to num- bers congregated in such room. The air of a perfectly close room in which half a dozen persons should pass twenty-four hours, would, at the end of that time, could the functions of life be properly carried on in such an atmosphere, be found to contain about eighteen pounds carbonic acid gas, aud eighteen pounds of effete decaying fluid and solid animal matter. We may easily conceive what must be the immediate or more distant effect of breathing such an atmosphere. This evil pertains equally to the new method of heating roomus by steim unless there is a constant ventilation kept up by opening at the tops of windows, or elsewhere. Indeed, the steam heating apparatus as generally arranged, affords absolutely no ventilation, The air in such rooms is utterly stagnant, and is breathed and re breathed with all its accumulation of fetid impurities from the lungs and skin of the inmates. Each person in such rooms is constantly taking into his mouth and down his throat old de . caying putrid particles of animal matter which nature is constantly rejecting and casting out of the living organism of every person in the room, through the pores of the skin and lungs, to the amount of three pounds daily. Could we, as several writers haye suggested, but see these foul excretions in which we live and breathe in such close unventilated rooms. a sense of decency would constrain us to open our windows, or otherwise permit the purifying breath of heaveu to blow them away ; for as Prof. Siliman in his new work on Philosophy, observes, it is really more filthy, as well as unwholesome, to breathe such foul air, than it would be to drink or use for culinary purposes the water in which we had washed ourselves."
