GOULDER, Harvey Danforth; admiralty lawyer; born, March 7, 1853; son of Christopher D. and Barbara Goulder; educated, public schools, graduated from Central High School in 1869; studied law in the office of Tyler & Dennison; married, Nov. 11, 1878, Mary F. Rankin (deceased 1913); spent the summer vaca- tions working on the lakes under his father, a master of lake craft; in 1871, entered the employ of Alcott, Horton & Co., as entry clerk in the wholesale drygoods dept .; took up study of admiralty law under the late John E. Carey; in 1875, received license to practice admiralty law in the courts of the state; formed partnership with J. F. Weh, then with Alexander Hadden; in 1893, associated with S. H. Holding; now head of Goulder, Day, White, Garry & Duncan; counsel for the Vessel Owners' Ass'n, member board of Industry, and Chamber of Commerce; counsel for the Lake Carriers Ass'n; prominent in plans for the improve- ment and betterment of the waterways of the great lakes; inti- mately connected with marine matters, and extensive practice in lake and river cities from Duluth to Montreal; recognized author- ity on all phases of admiralty law.
