POLK'S Directory of Astoria and Vicinity 1910
ASTORIA
The city and port of Astoria, Oregon, enjoys one of the most beautiful and advantageous positions on the coast line of the North Pacific, it being second only to the su- premely fine location of San Francisco; and its natural at- tributes are not unlike those of that great metropolis- since both cities are built upon peninsulas and each has two harbor-arms making for the fullest commercial service of the port, both are lofty, sightly, convenient and spa- cious; both completely land-locked, and both rife with great and usable channels.
Astoria's 15,000 people live and do business in an area of 10 square miles of municipal territory, the north front of the hilly peninsula, facing upon the beautiful bay made by the mouth of the Columbia, and its south front looking down upon Young's Bay; the views from either being among the grandest on the continent. The city proper oc- cupies the northern flank and stretches from the famous Tongue Point to Smith's Point at the western extremity which abutts into the merging floods of Young's and As- toria bays.
The city lies at the sea end of the lordly Columbia and is the very gate-way of the vast valley of 500,000 square miles, and must in time, become the market place for the immeasurable tonnage of the products of this, the granary and storehouse of the western world. The whole 3

section for which the city stands, it's admirable commer- cial facilities, it's strategic position and commanding place as a depot and rendezvous for all purposes of war, keep it sharply in line of selection, for immediate and war- ranted use at any auspicious moment of development or exigency, and it's future is undoubtedly secure and prom- ising.
Astoria is the head center of the famous salmon fish- eries of the Northwest and in its own field employs 3000 boats, 6000 men and 27 great canneries in marketing its $5,000,000 share of the business, annually ; it is the one and only home of the celebrated Royal Chinook salmon, the best known delicacy in that line in the wide world. Greater even that this is the lumber industry that has it's headquarters here. For miles in all directions about the city, there are scores of logging camps and milling plants and the finished product goes hence to the domestic and foreign ends of the earth in hundreds of millions of feet
every year. Dairying, small fruits, and farming are among the standard industries of the county and flourish abundantly, the climatic conditions being wonderfully ap- propriate and exactly adapted to these pursuits, all of which are expanding notably year by year. One of the wonders of this section is the equitable climate that pre- vails here at all seasons of the year. No extreme heat or cold is ever recorded at Astoria, and for this reason it is among the most popular of the summer resorts of the up- per coast; the sunshine being tempered always to the seek- er after leisurely comfort, and the cold of winter never in- terferes with business nor pleasure, but rather contrib- utes to the pursuit of either with it's rare moderateness.
The municipal equipment of Astoria is altogether modern and complete. She has everything that goes to make a place habitable, comfortable, convenient, attrac- tive; ample markets of all kinds, all accessories for the dis- patch of business, and for refined enjoyment and enter- taining pursuit; there is nothing lacking within her bor- ders, unless it be more modern hotel accomodations (her older houses in this line having outgrown their original status, ) and that is assured, a splendid modern hotel now being under way at a cost of $150,000; and a new High School building at a cost of $75,000, and the Elks Temple

CLATSOP COUNTY DIRECTORY 1910
$50,000. The official staffs of city and county are per- manently housed in handsome, spacious and finely ap- pointed city hall and court house. She has one of the fin- est hospitals in the State, under the careful supervision of the Sisters of the Roman Catholic faith; she has libraries, theatres, athletic, philharmonic, social and commercial clubs; a big and active Chamber of Commerce, the oldest on the Pacific Coast established in 1873 having a library of about 750 volumes containing municipal and government information; Churches of all denominations with big and flourishing congregations; a magnificent school sys- tem with a corps of 50 teachers; the best fire department of its scope in all the Northwest; a splendid trolley sys- tem; an ample and perfect water service of pure moun- tain water and under splendid conditions of distribution and pressure, and owned by the public; and all the varied appurtenances that make for civilization and progress.
One of Astoria's notable claims to real consideration abroad is that she has fewer idle people and depen- dent poor than any city of her size west of the Rockies; and more homes owned by their occupants than any place on the coast. Her population is of the thrifty, hard-work- ing, prideful class that believes in the home as an institu- tion, and strives for it, maintains it and thus qualifies the permanency and active spirit of her citizenship. And this spirit is fostered by the wide fraternal influence exerted by the 40 or more societies maintained here in constant and beneficient activity.
Astoria is the second city in Oregon in population and commercial rating, and holds her own with devoted interest and admirable success and will take due and timely promi- nence in the general commercial up-lift of the Northwest as her natural destiny and her inherent pride and wealth and capacity, shall dictate. Year by year she is attain- ing to more secure and profitable eminence in the trans- portation circles of the Pacific Northwest, and with the unfolding of the plans of the new Seattle, Portland & Spo- kane Railway Company, better known as the North Bank System, is likely to figure conspicuously as one of the coast termini of that splendid Hill property; as well as to be- come a notable factor in the sea-transit traffic of this sec- tion.
