POLK'S Seaside Directory 1910
The town of Seaside is located at the junction of the Ohanna and Necanicum rivers and is the western terminus of the Astoria & Columbia River Railroad. It has a per- manent population of about sixteen hundred people. Dur- ing the summer this increases to from five to ten thousand, as Seaside is one of the most popular summer resorts on the beach, with excellent boating and bathing, protect- ed by Tillamook Head from extreme winds. Three hotels are kept open throughout the year, and during the season there are numberless hotels and boarding houses. Seven trains a day, three local to Astoria and four through to Portland, leave and enter Seaside. It has also telegraphic and telephone connections, a volunteer fire department, street paving, a first class gravity water system and electric lights. The outlook for Seaside as a commercial point, outside of its interest as a summer resort, is good. and there is a state bank with capital of $25,000. a saw mill and door factory owned and operated by the Seaside Lum- ber and Manufacturing Co. This company has on its pay- roll upwards of two hundred and fifty men. The timber in this section is heavy and practically inexhaustible. This timber is largely spruce which is valuable for sash and door manufacture. The Seaside Signal, a bright weekly paper, is published here; also has in connection a job office. There are three churches, Episcopal, Methodist and Ro- man Catholic, and a good public school with five teachers. The climate of Seaside is a very desirable one, the mean temperature during the summer being about eighty-five degrees and in the winter rarely going below thirty-six degrees. More and more people are visiting Seaside as a winter resort as well as during the summer.
