INTRODUCTION

R. L. POLK & CO., publishers of the Astoria City and Clatsop County Directory, as well as more than 700 other city, county, state and national directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1931 edition of the Astoria and Clatsop County Directory.

Confidence in the growth of Astoria and Clatsop County's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be created as sections of this directory are consulted, for the directory is a mirror truly reflecting the community to the world.

The enviable position occupied by R. L. POLK & CO.'S directories in the estimation of the public throughout the country, has been estab- lished by rendering the best in directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having the courteous and hearty co-operation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Astoria and Clatsop County Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city and county.

Population

The estimated population of the city of Astoria is 11,373, based on the number of individual names in the alphabetical section of the directory, with due allowance for children and for women whose names are not listed separately from those of their husbands. Territory immediately adjacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are concerned, is included in the directory.

Six Major Departments

The several essential departments are arranged in the following order:

THE BUYERS' GUIDE, pages 13 to 32, printed on tinted paper, con- tains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and profes- sional interests of Astoria and Clatsop County. These pages will be found particularly interesting and instructive to substantial purchasing factors. The advertisements have been carefully grouped by depart- ments and are indexed under headings descriptive of the business repre- sented. This is reference advertising at its best, and, as such, merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. The community's activities in many interesting phases, are authentically pictured. In an ambitious and progressive community like Clatsop County, the necessity of liaving this kind of information imme- diately available, is very great, and frequently pressing. General appre- ciation of this fact is evidenced by the liberal support the city directory enjoys in the many fields which it serves.

THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents, business firms and corporations for Astoria is included in pages 35 to 191. A feature of this section is the inclusion of the wife's name in parentheses fol- lowing that of the husband. In pages 239 to 288 appears a directory of the smaller cities, towns and post offices of Clatsop County, arranged alpha- betically by towns.

8

9

ASTORIA CITY DIRECTORY (1931)

THE ASTORIA DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, TENNANTS OF OFFICE BUILDINGS, AND OTHER BUSINESS PLACES AND STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, pages 193 to 237.

THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 289 to 348. This department lists the various manufacturing mercantile and professional interests in alphabetical order under appropriate head- ings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable epitome of the business interests of the community. "The Directory is the common intermediary between Buyer and Seller." As such it plays no small part in the daily doings of the business world. "More goods are bought and sold through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium."

THE CLATSOP COUNTY TAXPAYERS' DIRECTORY extends from page 349 to page 352.

THE CLATSOP COUNTY RURAL ROUTES DIRECTORY, covering the routes served by the Astoria, Seaside and Warrenton Postoffices, is included in page 353 to 358.

Community Publicity

The directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the com- munity, depicting in truthful terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as an industrial site and as an educa- tional center. To broadcast this information the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Astoria and Clatsop County, for business men, everywhere, realize that the city directory represents a community as it really is.

The Astoria Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Clatsop County Direc- tory a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of R. L. Polk & Co., 325 Artisans building, Portland, Ore., for free reference by the general public. This is one of nearly 500 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the city directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

ASTORIA CITY DIRECTORY (1931)

ASTORIA, THE HOME OF KING CHINOOK

Astoria is located at the mouth of the Columbia River. It is the oldest white settlement in the Northwest. Astorians from their verandas can watch the ocean liners of the Pacific plying their way in and out of the Columbia entrance, or silhouetted against the setting sun on the breast of the ocean.

Astorians are properly proud of the early history of their city, for it was the portal through which civilization of the white man extended up to the Columbia River and throughout the Oregon Country consisting of Oregon, Washington and part of Montana.

Captain Robert Gray, a Boston mariner, was the first white man to enter the Columbia River and his ship "Columbia" was the first modern type ship to enter the river, in 1792, and after which the river derives its name. In 1805-06 Meriweather Lewis and William Clark, aided by the famous Indian woman, Sacajawea, made their overland expedition to Astoria, and established Fort Clatsop near the river which now bears their names. They remained at Fort Clatsop during the winter of 1805-06, securing salt for their return expedition by boiling sea water at Seaside. The salt cairn of Lewis and Clark is located at Seaside, Oregon, and is viewed by thousands annually. The explorations of these two adventurers penetrated as far as Cannon Beach, where they utilized a stranded whale to supply them with sustenance on their return journey. A flag pole at Fort Clatsop now marks the site of their original activities.
