Astoria was established by a fur trading expedition sent by John Jacob Astor. The post was later taken by the British and named Fort George and later returned to the American dominion after the fixing of the boundary line between the United States and Canada.

Astoria's chief commercial industry is salmon packing. Numerous canneries along the Columbia pack seven to eight millions of dollars worth of salmon each year. This product is shipped to all parts of the world. The industry ranks third in industries of Oregon and employs thousands of men and women each year.

The city is located in one of the greatest lumber belts in the world. This provides another substantial payroll for the city. More than one- half the standing timber in the United States is located in Oregon and Astoria is centrally located in the most timbered section and also adja- cent to the greatest wooded section of the state of Washington, which ranks second. Spruce, fur, hemlock, cedar and alder can be found in abundance only a few miles from the city.

The Astoria district may well be called a "Cow's Paradise". The mild climate keeps pastures green throughout the year. Snow is very rare. The dairy industry has an annual value of $2,000,000. Astoria manufactures its own dairy products, having two large creameries and ice cream plants, a powdered milk factory, all securing raw material from Clatsop county. Poultry raising is also making rapid progress, due to the availability of cheap logged off land, the mild climate and tlie abundance of green feed.

Shipping is one of the primary industries of the city and newest in development. Astoria has expended more than $4,000,000 on the Port of

Astoria terminals. Ships from every part of the world dock at one of the three deep water piers. The port is one of the chief grain and lumber shipping points of the Columbia River Basin. Astoria claims the largest fresh water harbor in the world, has less fog hours than any other port of the Pacific and the immense size of the river and tidal action eliminates the flood hazard or annual freshets. Shipping is never hindered by floating ice. The shipping industry has done much for the fishing and lumbering industry in the line of transportation and the lumber and fishing industries have in turn done their bit to build up the shipping industry.

Astoria has the lowest mean maximum temperature of any city in Western Oregon, 58.9 degrees. It has the highest mean minimum tem- perature of any city in Western Oregon, 45.2 degrees. Astoria has more clear days and fewer cloudy days than other principal cities of Oregon. These are a few of the outstanding evidences of the mild and equable climate of Astoria which reacts to the great benefit of agricul- ture and which is an important contributing factor in making Astoria a delightful place in which to live, the hottest day ever recorded in Astoria being 97 degrees, and the coolest 10 degrees above zero.

Astoria stands at the junction of two of America's greatest highways, the Columbia River Highway which follows the great stream down from the heart of the continent to the sea at Astoria, and the Roosevelt High- way, which parallels the Pacific coastline from Astoria to the California line.

Astoria claims many fine homes in addition to its many modern hotels and office buildings. The entire business section of the city burned to the ground in December, 1922, and has since then risen to be one of the most modern cities in the country.

Astoria is the center of a vacation wonderland. At its doors are the Oregon coast resorts, dominated by Seaside, the premier watering place of the Pacific Northwest. Ranking next to Seaside are Gearhart, Cannon Beach, and a long list of other famous resorts. At Astoria the tourist finds facilities for deep sea fishing, witnessing seining for salmon on Sand Island.

Trips across the Columbia River are available at all times. Scores of well stocked trout streams, bass lakes, duck shooting lakes are within a half hour's drive of Astoria. Three golf courses are within a short distance of the city.

The history of the Lower Columbia River Basin is depicted upon a massive, heroic column erected jointly by Vincent Astor, great-grandson of John Jacob Astor, and the Great Northern Railway. It is 700 feet above Astoria, 125 feet high and the sub-structure is built of concrete covered with a plastic substance. There has been etched in colors into the column in spiral figures seven feet high, the progressive, historical facts beginning with the primeval wilderness and extending to the com- ing of the first transcontinental railway train. An interior staircase leads to the apex of the column, whence a magnificent panorama of many rivers, mountains and forests may be viewed. At its foot on the banks of the Columbia, stands Astoria, one of the most modern cities of the Northwest and one destined to great growth and a glorious future.
