INTRODUCTION
R. L. POLK & CO., publishers of the Astoria City and Clatsop County Directory, as well as more than 700 other city, county, state and national directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1934 edition of the Astoria and Clatsop County Directory.
Confidence in the growth of Astoria and Clatsop County's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be created as sections of this directory are consulted, for the directory is a mirror truly reflecting the community to the world.
The enviable position occupied by R. L. POLK & CO.'S directories in the estimation of the public throughout the country, has been estab- lished by rendering the best in directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having the courteous and hearty co-operation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Astoria and Clatsop County Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city and county.
Populaion
The estimated population of the city of Astoria is 10,850, based on the number of individual names in the alphabetical section of the directory, with due allowance for children and for women whose names are not listed separately from those of their husbands. Territory immediately adjacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are concerned, is included in the directory.
Six Major Departments
The several essential departments are arranged in the following order:
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, pages 13 to 32, printed on tinted paper, con- tains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and profes- sional interests of Astoria and Clatsop County. These pages will be found particularly interesting and instructive to substantial purchasing factors. The advertisements have been carefully grouped by depart- ments and are indexed under headings descriptive of the business repre- sented. This is reference advertising at its best, and, as such, merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. The community's activities in many interesting plases, are authentically pictured. In an ambitious and progressive community like Clatsop County, the necessity of having this kind of information imme- diately available, is very great, and frequently pressing. General appre- ciation of this fact is evidenced by the liberal support the city directory enjoys in the many fields which it serves.
1
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents, business firms and corporations for Astoria is included in pages 35 to 173. A feature of this section is the inclusion of the wife's name in parentheses fol- lowing that of the husband. In pages 215 to 260 appears a directory of the smaller cities, towns and post offices of Clatsop County, arranged alpha- betically by towns.
8
9
ASTORIA CITY DIRECTORY (1934)
THE ASTORIA DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, TENNANTS OF OFFICE BUILDINGS, AND OTHER BUSINESS PLACES AND STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, pages 175 to 214.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 261 to 308. This department lists the various manufacturing mercantile and professional interests in alphabetical order under appropriate head- ings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable epitome of the busiess interests of the community. "The Directory is the common intermediary between Buyer and Seller." As such it plays no small part in the daily doings of the business world. "More goods are bought and sold through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium."
THE CLATSOP COUNTY TAXPAYERS' DIRECTORY extends from page 309 to 313.
THE CLATSOP COUNTY RURAL ROUTES DIRECTORY, covering the routes served by the Astoria, Seaside and Warrenton post offices, is included in pages 315 to 324.
Community Publicity
The directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the com- munity, depicting in truthful terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as an industrial site and as an educa- tional center. To broadcast this information the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Astoria and Clatsop County, for business men, everywhere, realize that the city directory represents a community as it really is.
The Astoria Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Clatsop County Direc- tory a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of R. L. Polk & Co., 325 Artisans building, Portland, Ore., for free reference by the general public. This is one of moe than 425 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the sys- tem is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the city directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

ASTORIA CITY DIRECTORY (1934)
ASTORIA, "HOME OF THE KING CHINOOK"
Astoria, the county seat of Clatsop County, is located but ten miles from the mouth of the Columbia River, in the northwestern corner of the State of Oregon. Astoria is of greater commercial importance than indicated by its population as it is the trading, financial and shipping center of the Lower Columbia River District of northwestern Oregon and southwestern Washington.
The known history of the Lower Columbia River and Astoria begins with the discovery and naming of the Columbia River by Captain Robert Gray on May 11, 1792. The Lewis and Clark expedition was the first exploring party to reach the mouth of the river by the overland route, arriving on November 15, 1805, and spending the winter of 1805-1806 near the present site of Astoria. In 1811 the Pacific Fur Company made the first permanent settlement and named their trading post Astoria in honor of John Jacob Astor, principal stockholder of the company. They had expected to establish a chain of trading posts throughout the territory but the War of 1812 and consequent lack of government aid and support forced abandonment of the enterprise and the post was taken over by their British rivals, the Northwest Fur Company and renamed Fort George. By the treaty following the war, the entire Northwest country was made subject to joint occupancy by England and the United States. The number of American permanent settlers increased so rapidly and the demand for a stable government became so insistent that in 1846 the long dispute over ownership was finally settled by fixing the 49th parallel as the boundary between the two countries.
