Today Astoria is widely known as the most modern city in the Northwest. Its former picturesque old business district was completely wiped out in a disastrous fire which completely burned over forty square blocks a decade ago. From its ashes arose a group of modern fireproof business blocks, hotels, theatres, and office buildings, wider streets with underground wiring and ornamental lighting to make a business district which always excites the visitor's interest by its cleanliness and modern appearance.

Astoria's largest industry derives its life from the sea which lies at her western door, and the great Columbia River which bounds the city to the north. Each year the tremendous silver hordes of Royal Chinook salmon drive their way into the Columbia river, called by an irresistible instinct to ascend its reaches and spawn in the waters where the big fish once lived as tiny salmon fry.

The fishing industry brings in about $6,000,000 annually and supports thousands of persons. Astoria is the hub and center of the Columbia river fisheries industry and to her long rows of canneries come fish front all reaches of the river and from trolling boats that sweep the Pacific coast line from the California border to as far north as Puget Sound.

The fish are caught by fishermen laying out and hauling in their seines from small boats in the Columbia River, by trollers with hook and line on the Pacific Ocean, by fish traps along the shores and by huge drag seines operated from sand bars in the river, where horses are used as the motive power to pull in the seines. This latter method is of great interest to visitors as it is probably the only "horse fishing" in the world. Fish are either canned, frozen, mild cured, kippered or smoked and are shipped to markets all over the world direct from the excellent shipping facilities available at Astoria. By-products of the fishing industry include the production of medicinal oils, commercial fish oil, fish meal and processing eggs for bait.

12

(1934) R. L. POLK & CO.'S

Clams and crabs form the basis of other important branches of the fishing industry and are shipped fresh or canned to ever widening markets.

The nationally known Pillsbury Flouring Mills operates a big, modern mill at Astoria, supplying their Pacific Coast trade and also shipping to Atlantic Coast and foreign markets.

Astoria is conveniently located in relation to the largest stands of timber remaining in this country. Besides the timber still standing and areas being re-forested in Clatsop County, that of southwestern Wash- ington is available. A system of ocean transportation of log rafts has been developed and the timber adjacent to Oregon's coastal streams now finds its largest market in the Columbia River lumber industry.

The Astoria district may well be called a "Cow's Paradise." The mild climate keeps pastures green throughout the year. Snow is very rare. The dairy industry has an annual value of $2,000,000. Astoria manufactures its own dairy products, producing butter, ice cream, cheese and powered milk, all from raw materials from Clatsop county. Poultry raising is also making rapid progress, due to the availability of cheap logged off land, the mild climate and the abundance of green feed. Other important agricultural specialties developed in recent years are cranberries, bent grass seed, bulbs, fresh vegetables, among the latter Clatsop County fresh peas being shipped in carload lots to eastern and mid-western cities.

Some of the finest shipping facilities on the Pacific Coast are avail- able to local industries in docks owned and operated by the Port of Astoria, a municipal corporation. The Port Terminal includes three piers with large fireproof warehouses and specialized cargo handling equipment.

The climate is mild and equable, the mean temperature over a period of 40 years being 50.9 degress F. The mean maximum for the same period is 57.9 degrees and mean minimum 45.2 degrees. The highest temperature recorded in this period was 97 degrees and lowest 10 de- grees. There are many winter seasons with practically no freezing weather. The temperature seldom rises above 90 degrees or falls below 30 degrees. The annual average rainfall for a period of 70 years is 77 inches. The average number of days annually with more than .01 inch of rain is 192. Astoria has more clear days and fewer cloudy days than other principal cities of Oregon. These are a few of the outstanding evidences of the mild and equable climate of Astoria which reacts to the great benefit of agriculture and which is an important contributing factor in making Astoria a delightful place in which to live.

Astoria is the center of a vacation wonderland. At its doors are the Oregon coast resorts, Seaside, Gearhart, Cannon Beach, and a long list of other famous resorts.

The history of the Lower Columbia River is depicted upon a massive, heroic column erected jointly by Vincent Astor, great-grandson of John Jacob Astor, and the Great Northern Railway. It is 700 feet above Astoria, 125 feet high and sub-structure is built of concrete covered with a plastic substance. There has been etched in colors into the column spiral figures seven feet high, the progressive, historical facts beginning with the primeval wilderness and extending to the coming of the first transcontinentl railway train. An interior staircase leads to the apex of the column whence a magnificent panorama of many rivers, mountains and forests may be viewed.
