INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
R. L. POLK & CO., publishers of more than 750 city, county, state and national Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1957 edition of the Portland City Directory.
Confidence in the continued growth of Portland's industry, population and wealth, and in the ad- vancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Portland to the world.
The enviable position occupied by R. L. POLK & CO.'S Directories in the estimation of the public throughout the country, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unriv- aled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Portland Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information per- taining to the city.
Three Major Departments
The three major departments are arranged in the following order :-
I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of Portland, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. Preceding this catalog. likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a large commercial and in- dustrial center like Portland, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always im- mediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Portland, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation.
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a port, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Portland.
The Portland Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Portland City Directory, a Directory Library is main- tained in the offices of the Portland Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 700 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by mem- bers of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and pro- fessional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

General Review
Portland is the chief market, wholesale center and seaport of the Pacific Northwest Regional Trade Area, comprising the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. As a jobbing and manu- facturing center, it serves a territory in excess of 254,000 square miles. Its exclusive trade area covers more than 154,000 square miles, taking in Oregon, southwest and eastern Washington and Idaho. It lies just above the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers, the latter being the second largest commercial river in the U. S., a position made doubly important through the continuous improvement of these great commercial waterways by the U. S. Government and the Port of Portland.
Portland retailers serve nearly 1,000,000 people, with the retail trading arca covering a radius of 40 to 50 miles. The wholesale trade area comprises a territory with 2,788,120 people.
Portland covers an arca of 69.89 square miles, and its population is increasing on an average of 2% yearly. It is called "The Rose City" in appreciation of the fact that its people pay especial attention to the beautification of their homes and especially to the planting of gardens and hedges. It is a city of

INTRODUCTION
homes, where the people take particular pride in making it known that without home life no progress can be made in growth nor in grandeur.
Portland is, most unusual in its efforts to develop the country throughout the state and also in the adjoining states, considered its trade territory, which has a very advantageous effect on the commerce of the city. The Columbia Gorge gives a water-level route from far in the interior, Railway lines operating on this grade pour their traffic into Portland most economically as a consequence. This splendid harbor is the only fresh-water harbor on the Pacific Coast, and there is a minimum 35-foot channel depth to the sea at mean low tide.
The City of Portland has a water-front project that cost in excess of $2,500,000, making a solid concrete harbor wall for a distance of two miles. It is a part of the gigantic water-front improvement project to assure Portland one of the greatest commercial enterprises on an inland river.
Vessels of 35-foot draft enter the river with ease. War vessels make Portland at intervals, steaming into the central harbor, which is in the heart of the city.
Portland is one of the chief lumber manufacturing cities of the world. More than one-fifth of the nation's standing timber is in Oregon. The chief wood-using industries are lumber, pulp, insulation, paper, veneers, plywood, furniture, store fixtures, showcases, excelsior, doors, sash, ready-built houses, plywood, box shooks, battery separators, and almost everything included in the woodworking industry.
