BUTLER COUNTY

History of Butler

Butler, as well as Butler County, of which it is the County seat, is named in honor of General Richard Butler, an officer of the Continental Army who. so ably conducted his command that he was considered by General Washington one of the ablest partisan officers of the Revolution. General Butler was born in York county, Pa., April 1st, 1743, and was killed Nov. 4th, 1791, in an expedition sent against the Indians on the Miami river.

The pioneer white men of Western Pennsylvania were French. Probably the first white men to enter Butler County were Captain Pierre Joseph Celoron and his company, who followed the Allegheny river from its source to the Ohio and on south in the year 1749. taking possession of the country in the name of Louis XV of France. The mathematician, geo- grapher and chaplain of the expedition was Father Joseph Peter de Bon- necamp of the Jesuit Order.

The town of Butler was created by act of Assembly in 1803. The original site of the town was what may now be termed Court House Ridge. and was a tract of three hundred acres, donated for a town site by Samuel J. Cunningham. John Cunningham and Robert Graham. The site was chosen on account of its central location in the county, the natural advantages of water and water power, good drainage, adjacent meadows, convenient coal banks and limestone and sandstone quarries.

Butler remained a part of Butler township nutil 1817 when it was incorporated as the "Borough of Butler" and it so remains today, although the population is sufficiently great for a city of the third class. In 1880 Butler boasted a population of 3,000. Since that time the growth has been rapid, due largely to the increase in manufacturing interests. The 1910 census gives Butler a population of 20,72%. The present population is estimated at 30,000.
