THE first Edition of my New Directory is at length presented to the Public, with what claims to a favourable reception, remains for that Public to decide. One thing however is certain, my desire and efforts have been, to make it as perfect as circumstances would ad- mit. To say that no errors have escaped correction, would be presumption-but I can con- fidently affirm, that if errors exist, it is not owing to carelessness, but chiefly to circum- stances beyond my control. Some of which are the following.
First. The numbering of the Houses and Stores throughout the whole of the City and Districts, is, in many instances, very irregular-and on some of the main streets, it frequently occurs, that houses more than a square apart have the same number-besides, many of the houses are not numbered at all; to which add the fact, that the numerous titles of squares, rows, and places, given to small sections of different streets-and the difficulties from this source will be apparent.
Second. The same name is frequently given to streets in different sections of the City and Districts-for instance, not less than four are called Ann street-two Carpenter-three or four Penn, &c. &c., which often rendered it difficult to give a definite direction to the lo- cation of residences and stores mentioned in this work.
Third. The present is my first effort, and necessarily I had to encounter difficulties from this source not anticipated, but which I have diligently endeavoured to overcome and obvi- ate, and for which, I trust the Public will make a due allowance. .
The names throughout this work are arranged with reference to the alphabetical spelling of the christian as well as the surname-as nearly as may be-and due regard has been paid to the proper orthography of the names, although compelled frequently to receive informa- tion from persons ignorant, not only of the proper spelling, but of the name of the occupant of the house, as well as his business and its location.
Altogether, as compiler of this work, I have met with difficulties I did not foresee, and therefore present this my first edition to my fellow-citizens, trusting that it will meet with that kind indulgence for which they are so much distinguished, and which has been so freely and frequently exercised on other occasions, pledging myself that my next Edition shall be an improvement on the present.
The Public will observe, that I have given to the streets the names designated by the boards on the corners, and only when I have deemed it more expedient, and as tending to give plainer directions to the inquirer, have I departed from this rule. Arch and Race streets have been used in preference to Mulberry and Sassafras, being the more common names ap- propriated to them by custom. John street has been changed to Marshall, and I have used Poplar street instead of Poplar lane. The word street has been uniformly omitted as su- perfluous.
