PREFACE.
THE thirtieth issue of " The Philadelphia City Directory," compiled and published by the subscriber, is presented to the public, as will be seen, greatly enlarged and improved. The difficulties of obtaining information, owing to the fears prevailing in many parts of the city since the commencement of the war in 1861 having disap- peared, no obstructions were met on that account, and consequently the number of. names has been very much increased. The number of pages in the edition for 1867, including the Business Directory and miscellaneous matter, is 1168, an excess of 224 pages over that of 1866, and 192 pages more than in the Directory proper, making nearly 25,000 names more than in the previous issue.
The extent of territory to be explored in a city like this (12 miles by 24 miles), so as to reach every part of it, and every adult person and family, and the separati~u of names to be inserted, from a mass, written. on slips : amounting. in : ntenbir to 1. haps 250,000 to 300,090, so as to: avpid . duplicates; triplicates . and quadrupli- cates, involves an amount of labor known only to the compiler. Claiming, therefore, indulgence for the thirtieth year; the compiler of The Philadelphia City Directory " submits the present volume, improved and greatly enlarged, to his friends and to the public.
Mr. Franklin Hall, my only advertising agent, suggested and has arranged the advertising department on an improved plan, making two departments, to wit: "Mc Elroy's Insurance Register," in which are placed Insurance advertisements, and " McElroy's Commercial Register," in which are placed the advertisements of others who have been pleased to patronize the work. This arrangement has been . already appreciated, judging by the increased number of valuable advertisements inserted in the present edition, and to which is directed the special attention of all persons interested.
