PREFACE.

.......<

T OWARDS the middle of the year 1 793, the fubfcri- ber publifhed the firft Edition of the Philadelphia Directory and Regifter ; and from the very rapid fale which the work met with, he had the fatisfaction of find- ing that he had been employed in a performance of general utility to his fellow citizens.

From the frequent removals, and the conftant acceffi- on of new inhabitants, it is obvious, that the utility of fuch publications can be of no long duration ; hence ari- fes the neceffity of their being frequently renewed.

In moft European cities, and in the cities of New York and Charleftown, the Directory is publifhed annually ; and in conformity to this practice, it is the intention of the fubfcriber, in future to iffue one towards the com- mencement of each fucceeding year ; provided he fhall meet with fufficient encouragement.

In the prefent Edition, the account given of the City, and of its charitable and literary inftitutions, is con- fiderably enlarged. Some things, which in the former Edition were decmed of lefs confequence, have been ei- ther abbreviated or omitted ; and others of more general importance, fubftituted. A plan of the city has likewife been added, which he believes to be very accurate, and hopes it will be found ufeful, particularly to ftrangers.

Since the names were firft collected, feveral, who have lately come to the city, have fent in their defignations and places of abode. Thefc, together with fome which he has taken from the daily prints, and a few accident- ally omitted in the arrangement, will be found in the Supplement.

On the whole, the fubfcriber, can with confidence af- fert, that through every part of the performance, he has anxioufly endeavoured to render the information therein contained, as accurate as poffible ; he is, howe- ver, well aware, that in a publication of this nature, it is almoft impoffible intirely to avoid errors. For thefe, which he hopes are few, he folicits the indulgence of a generous public.

JAMES HARDIE.
