PHILADELPHIA
BATHS
ERECTED BY WM. SWAIM,
· AT THE N. EAST
CORNER OF SEVENTH AND GEORGE STS.
NEAR CHESNUT STREET.
The building has the advantage of being located in one of the most retired, airy, and at the same time central positions in the city. It contains two distinct ranges of apartments, appropriated for each of the sexes, having several and separate entrances, the best female atten- dance is provided for the service of the ladies .- The establishment contains upwards of fifty Baths, which includes more than twenty marble ones lately imported from Italy, made expressly for this estab- lishment, and the residue are of plated copper, zinc, &c. Every pro- vision exists for Shower Bathing ; this salutary application can there- fore be enjoyed at pleasure by means of appropriate contrivances under the complete controul of the individuals using it. A swimming room has been constructed for the accommodation of such as are fond of this recreation, and those who are ignorant of . that necessary qualification can acquire it without hazard, and the temperature of the water equal- led by steam,
The efforts of the proprietor have been strenuous, and the prepara- tions very munificent in this splendid and spacious establishment, and the proprietor feels entitled to public patronage because no expense has been spared to complete every appurtenance, and combine every re- quisite for their perfection.
It may not be amis to give some of the observations of the celebrated. Count Rumford, to prove that warm bathing is more conducive to health than any luxury that can be enjoyed in a populous city, its beneficial effects are particularly described as follows :
" It is not merely on account of the advantages," says the Count, ", which I happened to receive from Warm Bathing, which renders me so much an advocate for the practice : exclusive of the wholesomness of the Warm Bath, the luxury of bathing is so great, and the tranquil state of the mind and body, which follows, is so exquisitely delightful that I think it quite impossible to recommend it too highly, if we con- sider it merely as a rational and elegant refinement." " The manner in which the warm bath operates," he continues, "in producing its salu- tary consequences, seems very cvident. The genial warmth which is so applied to the skin, in the place of the cold air of the atmosphere, by which we are commonly surrounded, expands all those very small ves- sels, where the extremities of the arteries and veins unite, and by gently stimulating the whole frame, produces a free and full circulation, which if continued for a certain time, removes all obstructions in the vascular system, and puts all the organs into that state of regular, free and full motion, which is essential to health, and also to that delightful repose, accompanied by a consciousness of that power of exertion, which con- stitutes the highest animal enjoyment of which we are capable.

This Museum is the oldest and largest establishment in the United States, and contains immense collections of the Animal and Mineral kingdoms of nature, from all parts of the world. 'These are all beau- tifully arranged, so as to enable the visitor to study the objects with the greatest advantage. The collection of implements and ornaments of our aboriginal tribes is very extensive and interesting, and the Cab- inet of antiquities, and Artificial Curiosities, is not less worthy of at- tention. In addition to the ordinary attractions of a Museum, there is in this a very large collection of the portraits of American Statesmen and Warriors of the Revolution, and of the most distinguished scien- tific men of Europe and America.
'The founder C. W. Peale, desirous of securing the Museum per- manently in this city, obtained an act of Incorporation by which the stability of the institution is insured. The act of incorporation secures the use of the Museum in perpetuity to the city, and authorizes the Stock holders to appoint annually five trustees, who meet quarterly to regulate the business of the institution. Nothing can be removed from the Institution under a penalty, and forfiture of double the value of the thing removed ; hence donations may be made with certainty on the part of the donors, that the articles placed in the Museum will al- ways remain for the public good.

JOHN SCOTT, Lodge St. NO. 1, North side Pennsylvania Bank,
After a series of trials and persevering labour, has the pleasure of making known to Merchants generally throughout the United States, and all other persons concerned, that he has greatly improved the above mentioned Chests, and taken out Letters Patent for the same : he therefore respectfully invites their attention to the peculiar construction and safety of this valuable appendage of the counting house and the ware room, the acknowledged superiority of which has obtained a decided preference from all who have experienced its Important usefulness.
From the intrinsic value of his chests, an attempt to introduce spurious arti- cles into the market has been made, and without a careful examination purch- asers are very liable to be imposed upon, the patentee therefore requests that a scrutiny should be made by all who may desire to possess one of his Improved Composition Fire Proof Chests, and avoid being duped and their property de- stroyed rather than preserved when risked in chests the construction of which is calculated only to deceive.
To be had at LODGE STREET, No. 1. north side of Pennsylvania Bank, Philadelphia .- LOCKS with invisible keys which will lock and unlock twenty thousand different ways are offered for sale, and a reward of 500 dollars to any person who will open one of said locks with fair means, and without violence.
