INTRODUCTION

N gathering material for my late work, The An- ceftors of Marguerite Eyerman, I found it neceffary to vifit fome of the old grave yards in Northampton and I was aftonifhed at the number of grave-ftones which had either entire- ly, or in part, loft their infcriptions. How many more would fuc- cumb to the action of the elements within the next decade! In the majority of cafes, thefe infcriptions being the only record extant.

Realizing the great lofs to compilers of family gen- ealogies, and the abfolute neceffity for a permanent record, I deci- ded to copy the dates of birth and death and in certain cafes, the entire infcriptions.

Some of the yards having as many as one thoufand ftones, it has been deemed advifable to record only thofe which ftand for perfons born prior to 1780; and it is fafe to fay that 98 per cent of fuch are recorded herein.

Genealogical notes have been added to many of the names: and the original fpelling has been retained.

N gathering material for my late work, The An- ceftors of Marguerite Eyerman, I found it neceffary to vifit fome of the old grave-yards in Northampton and adjacent counties and I was aftonifhed at the number of grave-ftones which had, either entirely, or in part, loft their infcriptions. How many more would fuccumb to the action of the elements within the next dec- ade! In the majority of cafes, thefe infcriptions being the only record extant, fo far as the births are concerned.

Realizing the great lofs to compilers of family gen- ealogies, and the abfolute neceffity for a permanent record of thefe ftones, I immediately decided to copy the dates of birth and death and in many cafes the entire infcriptions.

Some of the yards having as many as one thoufand ftones, it has been deemed advifable to record only thofe which ftand for perfons born prior to 1 7 8 o: and it is fafe to fay that 98 per cent of fuch are recorded herein.

Genealogical notes have been added to many of the names; and the original fpelling has, in every cafe, been retained.

Lwr. Mt. BETHEL

NE of the oldeft grave-yards in Northampton Co., one of no little importance, containing, as it does the graves of many of the earlieft Scotch-Irifh fet- tlers, is that of the Prefbyterian congregation of Lower Mount Bethel townfhip.

This hiftoric fpot is fituated near the village of Martin's Creek about feven miles N. of Eafton, and was undoubtedly in ufe pri- or to 1750, for "as early as 1738, fervices were held by the Rev. Gilbert Tennent, in a fmall Church adjoining the yard".

The prefent condition of the yard is difgraceful and, as fuch reflects great difcredit upon the Church under whofe control it is.

The DRYLAND YARD (Lutheran-Reformed)

DRYLAND

HE DRYLAND Church-Yard is fituated at Heck- town, in Lower Nazareth, townfhip, eight miles W. of Eafton. It was laid-out between the years 1760 and 1770.

The prefent Church, a well-built ftructure, adjoin- ing the yard, was erected in the year 1842. The entire property is well-kept. Unfortunately, the infcriptions on fome of the older ftones have become quite illegible; this is particularly noticeable on the Potfdam fand-ftone.

The Eafton GERMAN-REFORMED YARD

EASTON GERMAN REFORMED

HE old GERMAN REFORMED Grave- Yard is fituated in the weftern part of Eafton (old town) occupying one of the higheft points therein and, overlooking the beautiful Bufhkill valley.

Jungle-like might be an appropriate word to apply in defcribing the condition of this fpot.

To explore this yard, during the Summer months would be, not only a difficult, but a hazardous, undertaking: diffi- cult, becaufe the tree-like brufh is fo denfe as to be almoft impen- etrable: hazardous, becaufe the Reptilia have become legion.

The lift given, here-with, undoubtedly does not reprefent all the interments, as is evidenced by the fact that there are feveral piles of grave-ftones in the yard; whether thefe ftones reprefent the action of the elements in overturning them or, wheth- er they reprefent the removal of the remains to other yards, is not known: It is known, however, that fome of the remains have been re-interred in the Eafton Cemetery.
