MILLER Miller is an exceedingly com- mon name in Pennsylvania and other parts of the country, be- longing to many different families and to at least two distinct stocks. For while many families of British origin bear this name, there is a probably smaller but not inconsiderable number of families of German descent whose name was formerly Mueller, but has been anglicized into Miller. The Whitmer family are of German origin. The name WHITMER was originally spelled Wid- mer and the branches of the family remaining in Germany still retain the original spelling. This family for centuries owned and still own and occupy a patrimonial estate in the province of Hohenzollern, near the town of Sulz, on the river Neckar, in Germany. At the close of the
eighteenth century the estate was owned by and in possession of John Whitmer, who mar- ried (first) Margaret Stull, by whom he had three children: John, Mathias and Mary; and by his second marriage a son, Jacob. When he died the estate descended, under the laws of that country, to the eldest son, John. Mathias, mentioned below, emigrated to Amer- ica and became naturalized. John died child- less and the estate passed into the hands of Jacob.
(II) Mathias, son of John Whitmer, was born in the old home on the river Neckar, in the province of Hohenzollern, April 2, 1798. His boyhood was spent amid the stirring scenes of that time in a country that was continually at war either with or against Napoleon. After attending the schools of his native place he was registered as a student in the University of Heidelberg. At the early age of seventeen he was called upon to serve in the Prussian army under Marshal Blücher and was wounded at the battle of Ligny ; two days later he took part in the battle of Waterloo. Later he was a student in the Prussian military school at Koenigsberg. As part of his education he learned the trade of cabinetmaker and mill- wright. In 1819, on the death of his father, he emigrated to America, settling in North- umberland county, Pennsylvania. Later he removed to Westmoreland county, living there until 1835, afterwards moving to Allegheny county, and settled finally, in 1838, in Farm- ington township, Clarion county, Pennsylvania, where he engaged in lumbering and farming. In 1832 he married Mary, daughter of George Rosensteele, of Westmoreland county, Penn- sylvania. Her ancestors at a very early date had settled in Maryland, and, as the country became settled, they removed to the Cumber- land valley, near Gettysburg, finally settling at Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Her father was killed in 1813 at the battle of Queenstown, where Brock's monument now stands on the Niagara river, Canada.
