In the latter part of 1868, he purchased an interest in the A. Berkemeyer lumber yard, and in 1871 he became sole proprietor by purchasing the interest of his partner. This yard was lo- cated at the corner of Second street and Center alley. In the fall of 1888 he purchased from the administrators of John Balliet, the lumber yard and planing mill between Railroad and Cherry streets, the only lumber yard in Slating- ton, which now employs 22 men. From July 24, 1906, until his death, Jan. 12, 1914, Mr. Kern was president of the National Bank of Slat- ington, and was a director since 1875, being one of the original directors and organizers.
Mr. Kern took a keen interest in political af- fairs and held the offices of chief burgess of the borough, councilman, and school director. He and his family held membership in St. John's Reformed church, which congregation he served as trustee since its organization.
In 1859 he was married to Amanda Kern, daughter of Thomas and Rebecca (Miller) Kern,
Sr., and their children are: Clara, wife of A. P. Neff ; Robert ; Dr. A. J .; William H .; Frank- lin; Richard E .; Ella, wife of W. W. Morgan; Lillian, wife of C. H. Hodges, and George C.
Robert S. Kern was born April 15, 1863, and is employed by his father. He married in 1879, Susan E. Lentz, daughter of Gideon Lentz. They had five children, of whom three are alive: Arthur E .; Raymond T .; and Alva M., is a graduate of Slatington high school, and the American Commercial School, Allentown, and is now a stenographer.
DR. ALVIN J. KERN, physician and surgeon, was born in Slatington, March 28, 1865. He was educated in the public schools and graduated from the Slatington high school, and in 1885 from Ursinus College. He entered the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1885, graduating in 1888, and located at Slat- ington. In 1891 he took a post graduate course in the Philadelphia Polyclinic Hospital, and now enjoys a large practice in Slatington.
Dr. Kern is a member of Slatington Lodge, No. 440, F. & A. M .; Slatington Chapter, No. 292, R. A. M .; Allen Commandery, No. 20, K. T., of Allentown ; and of the I. O. O. F .; of the Jr. O. U. A. M .; Knights of Friendship ; and of the P. O. S. of A. He is a Republican in politics, and was the first Republican member of the Legislature elected from Lehigh county, being elected in 1894 and re-elected in 1896 He was a member of the school board of Slatington for nine years, having been elected three successive terms, and served one term as president, one term as secretary, and one term as treasurer. He is a member of the Reformed Church.
Dr. Kern was married June, 1893, to Emma J. Schaffer, daughter of Charles and Hetty (Steckel) Schaffer, of Cementon. - Mrs. Kern died Nov. 14, 1907, aged 44 years. They had one daughter, Marion Schaffer Kern, who grad- uated from the Slatington high school in 1911 with first honor. Mrs. Kern was a school teach- er in Lehigh county for thirteen years, possessing a professional certificate, and was highly es- teemed by her pupils.
In 1894, Dr. Kern built his present fine resi- dence, which contains a large library which is frequently consulted, as its owner is a student of standard literature. .
At the time Dr. Kern was a candidate for the Legislature, as Lehigh county was known to be one of the most reliable Democratic counties in the state, very few people supposed that the Re- publican party had any opportunity of winning; but the entire house delegation of the party tri- umphed by a good majority.
Dr. Kern was a member of the committees on

public health and sanitation ; fish and game laws ; and bureau of statistics. He introduced and ex- erted his utmost efforts to have passed a bill providing for the appointment of inspectors of slate quarries, in which his constituents were largely interested, and gave his best and most careful attention to all his legislative duties.
William H. Kern was born on Sept. 19, 1866, died Feb. 24, 1896, at Slatington. He was mar- ried at Chicago, during the World's Fair in 1893, to Mary Alice Clay, of Chester county, Pa. He was the cashier of the White Haven Savings Bank at the time of his death.
Franklin Kern, a druggist in Philadelphia, was graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and has a drug store at 39th and As- pen streets, and is married to Nellie Moore, and have one son, Franklin, Jr.
Richard E. Kern was born March 1, 1869, and is the yardman at his father's lumber yard. He was married May 10, 1893, to Sallie, daugh- ter of Alexander Caskie. They have these chil- dren: Ruth, David, Thomas, Ella, Ara, W. Wallace, Amanda, Frederick, and Samuel.
George C. Kern was born at Slatington, Jan. 16, 1878. He was graduated from the high school and entered his father's employ, and since 1893 has been his assistant and bookkeeper.
Arthur E. Kern, son of Robert S., was mar- ried in 1899 to Hannah Roberts. He is in the employ of the Thomas Kern Lumber Company as engineer and fireman. They have six chil- dren, three of whom died small. The living are : David, Eleanor and Sarah ..
Ray T. Kern, son of Robert S., is married to Rosalie Schwartz, of Lehighton, Pa. They live at Slatington, and he is assistant bookkeeper of the Thomas Kern Lumber Company. They have one daughter, Lucille.
Clara Kern, daughter of Thomas, is married to A. P. Neff, of Slatington. They have three sons and three daughters, namely: Oscar E., assistant treasurer Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company, resides at Philadelphia; 2. Frank A., of Wichita, Kansas; 3. George, mail carrier, of Slatington ; 4. Lillian; 5. Marguerite; and 6. Frances. Lillian is a graduate of West Chester State Normal School and is a public school teacher.
William Kern, born in 1725, third son of Nicholas, the emigrant, became the owner of the grist and saw mills, which he operated many years. In 1756, he furnished Benjamin Frank- lin with lumber at Fort Allen, and during the Indian troubles rendered the settlers valuable service as mediator with the red men, with whom he was most friendly. Frequently Indians encamped in the vicinity of the mills.
His son, William, Jr., who died in 1841, left two sons, William, of Parryville, and Joseph; who had a son who lived along the Susquehanna river.
Christopher Kern, second son of William, Sr., had sons: Henry, Daniel, Charles, Lefenus, and Stephen.
Henry's children were Israel, Nathan, Elias, Conrad and Owen.
Daniel removed to Crawford county.
Charles' sons were Joel, Adam, Lewis, and Alfred.
Lefenus had four sons, and Stephen's sons were Francis, Edward and Charles.
Nicholas Kern, third son of William, Sr., was born Oct. 2, 1773. His sons were: Henry, who removed to Indiana; Jacob, who had no sons; Stephen, who died single; and Adam, who moved to Indiana.
John Kern, son of William, Sr., born Nov. 2, 1777. He succeeded his father at the mill, known as Kern's Mill. It is now owned by Alfred J.

GENEALOGICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL.
Jonas Kern, second son of John Kern, and Magdalena Peter, was born Oct. 28, 1805, and died Dec. 28, 1892. At the early age of six- teen he was placed in charge of the mill and resided in the home where he was born and raised. The first slate quarry on the west side of the Lehigh river was opened in 1845 on lands of Jonas Kern, under lease from him to the great dissatisfaction of his neighbors.
His wife was Maria Wehr, a daughter of Michael Wehr. She died in February, 1851, aged thirty-seven years, and is buried at Frieden's church. They had two children: Violetta, who married Henry Kuntz, and Benjamin.
BENJAMIN KERN, an honored citizen of Slat- ington, was born in his present residence, August 26, 1834, and was educated in the local schools and later at Kessler's Allentown Academy. He engaged in the mrecantile business at the age of twenty years with his brother-in-law, Henry Kuntz, under the firm name of Kuntz & Kern. They conducted a general store, and were also pioneers in the slate industry in the earlier 50's. Later the firm became Kern & Opp and after twelve years, Mr. Opp withdrew. Mr. Kern continued the business alone for forty-five years, and retired in 1893, after a busy and successful career.
Mr. Kern was chief burgess during the rail- road strike in 1877 and was a member of coun- cil for many years.
He and the family are members of St. John's Reformed church, where he served as deacon and elder for many years. In 1857, he was married to Leanna, a daughter of Jonas Peter. Mrs. Kern died May 10, 1894, in her 54th year. They had two children: Agnes, who died in infancy; and Ellen Victoria, who married Joseph H. Ful- ler. Mr. Fuller, (who was born in 1850, at Harrisburg, Pa.), has been an invalid for some years, but his mental factulties are strong and clear. He resides with his father-in-law, at Slatington. They have no children.
Jacob Kern, another son of William, Sr., had sons: Jacob, who lived along the Susquehanna ; and Elias, of Quakertown. Among the daugh- ters of Mr. Kern, Sr., were Salome, Julianna, and Elizabeth Catharine, one of whom married a Mr. Snyder, of Millport.
Christopher Kern, second son of William, Sr., was a farmer and a member of the Reformed Church. He married Susanna Bauman, who was born Oct. 4, 1778, and died March 8, 1869, at the great age of 90 years, three months and four days. Their children were: Henry, Dan- iel, Charles, Lefanus, Stephen, Mrs. Joseph Peter and Mrs. Stephen Smith.
Charles Kern, third son of Christopher, was born at Slatington in 1805, and died there in 1860. He married a Miss Peter. He and his wife were buried at Frieden's church, where his parents are also buried. He owned a IIO-acre farm, the second property north from the Le- high Valley depot.
His children from the first marriage were: Joel; Hettie, wife of John Roth; Aaron; Lewis ; and Alfred J.
He married the second time, Mrs. Susanna (German) Buck. They had two children: Or- ville Kern, and Medina, wife of Nathan German.
ALFRED J. KERN, miller at Slatington, son of Charles Kern, was born in 1847, and remained upon the homestead until he attained his ma- jority. He learned the milling trade when 18 years old. He was employed for a year in the old Custard Mill near Slatington and three years in the mill at Germanville. In 1872, he rented his present mill and operated it until 1877, when he purchased it from the Henry Kuntz estate, since which time it has been oper- ated under his management. In 1903, Mr. Kern built his fine residence at Main and Dia- mond streets, where stood the original Kern Mill mentioned in the Indian Wars. He and his family are members of St. John's Reformed church, which he has served as deacon.
He was married in 1871 to Fietta Snyder, daughter of Eli Snyder, of Pleasant Corner. They had nine children: William A., Howard, Irwin, Gertrude, Beulah, and Charles, Ida, Al- bert and Oscar, deceased.
Elias Kern, son of Henry Kern, and grandson of Christopher, was born June 19, 1816, in Washington township, near Rockdale, where he was reared and educated. He attended his fath- er's saw mill which for a long time was oper- ated both day and night. Elias was visited on a dark night by a panther and for safety ran into his cabin and made the door fast, where he re- mained until morning. Meanwhile the animal jumped on the cabin roof and for some time emitted blood-curdling yells. After his marriage he removed to Mehoopany, Pa., and there pur- chased a farm, which he greatly improved during the forty-five years he lived upon it. In 1882 he sold his farm and went to near Quakertown, Pa., where he resided until 1896, when he and Mrs. Kern made their home with their son, John J. Kern, at Quakertown, where he died, Feb. 24, 1897. Mrs. Kern died Oct. 7, 1904, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. A. Baum, at Allentown. Both were interred in the Union cemetery at Slatington.
Elias Kern married Annie Fritzinger. Issue: Benjamin and Susanna, both died in infancy;

John J. Kern, the youngest child of Elias and Anne (Fritzinger ) Kern, was born Oct. 1, 1855, at Mehoopany, Pa. He was educated in the public schools, alternating with assisting his father on the farm. In 1879 he became a cigar salesman and covered western and southwestern territory. In 1883 he engaged in the manufac- ture of cigars, having his main factory at Quak- ertown until 1902, then removed to Slatington, where he built a double residence on upper Main street. He continues to manufacture cigars, on a small scale, and also is a fruit grower. At Quakertown he was active in Republican politics and was for some years a committeeman of the Third ward and was delegate to a number of conventions. John J. Kern married in 1895, Susan E. Remaly, daughter of Adam Remaly. Issue : a son, J. Raymond Kern. Mrs. Kern was the widow of E. H. Huff, by whom she had one daughter, Irene Huff.
George Kern, son of John and Annie Marga- ret Kern, was born in 1774, and married June 6, 1802, Maria Elizabeth Sensinger. He died April 27, 1850, aged seventy-five years, four months and seventeen days. Both were buried at Frieden's church. They had sons: John, George ( 1807-1861), and Conrad.
Conrad Kern was married to Polly Snyder, who died in January, 1836, a young mother. They lived at Slatington. Their children were: (1) John, who served as a soldier in the Civil War. Two funeral sermons were delivered for him, as he was supposed to have been killed in the army. (2) Luzetta, who died young; and (3) Paul C., of whom below.
PAUL C. KERN, the youngest son of Conrad and Polly ( Snyder) Kern, was born Jan. 7, 1836. He worked for various farmers of his neighbor- hood until about twenty years of age. He then bought a farm near what is now Best P. O., of 60 acres, where after five years he sold out, and built a brick house at "Peter's Store," in 1864. In that year he removed to Lizard Creek Valley, where he purchased a farm of 60 acres, farmed two years, then built a saw-mill, which he operated. In 1869 he sold this property and moved into his house at Peter's Store. He burned lime in Whitehall some years, then operated a saw mill in Washington township for many years. Later he operated a steam saw mill and fol- lowed the lumber business about twelve years. He retired from active work in 1906 and his son succeeded to his business. He became a member of the Heidelberg Reformed church. Paul C. Kern married in 1857, Maria Rauch, daughter of Joshua Rauch. Mrs. Kern died
March 6, 1907, aged 69 years. Issue: Luzetta, died aged 4 years; Janette, married William Hoff- man; Laura, married Thomas Fries; Josephine, married Oscar Hamer; Lewis, married Ada Rauch. Issue: Dora and Worman. He is a farmer in Washington township.
Nicholas Kern was born Nov. 17, 1793, at Emerald, and died there Jan. 7, 1868. He had a tract of about 300 acres of land, which was eventually divided into four farms and appor- tioned to his children. He married Elizabeth Hartman, born Jan. 15, 1798, died Nov. 2, 1877, and both Mr. and Mrs. Kern were interred at Frieden's Reformed church cemetery. Both were members of this church. Issue: (1) David; (2) Paul; (3) Robert, of whom below; (4) Kate; and (5) Elizabeth Kern.
David Kern, the eldest son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Hartman) Kern, was born June 9, 1820, died Nov. 17, 1890, and was interred in the cemetery at Slatington. He was educated in the public schools and upon attaining man- hood engaged in farming in Washington town- ship and owned the farm now occupied by his son, Peter Kern. He was a deacon, elder and trustee of Frieden's Reformed church. He mar- ried Abigail Lentz, who died August 17, 1893, in her 76th year. Issue: three children: Peter, of whom below, and two who died in infancy.
Peter Kern, only son of David and Abigail (Lentz) Kern, was born on his father's farm, Jan. 28, 1845. His boyhood days were spent upon the farm, his time divided between work and attendance at the public schools. He as- sisted his parents until their decease, when he suc- ceeded to the ownership of the homestead, which he has since operated. In politics he is a Demo- crat; was township supervisor five years. His family are members of the Evangelical Church, of which Mr. Kern served as a trustee.
Peter Kern married, in 1866, Madina Neff, daughter of Elias and Lydia Ann (Mosser) Neff. Issue : two children, Oscar D. and Ellen L. Kern. Oscar D. married Minnie Boussard. Issue: Homer and Claude. Ellen L. married (first) Oliver A. Krum. Issue: Warren, Irene, Minnie and Olive Krum. Ellen L. married (second) Alvin Sechler. Issue: Lawrence Sech- ler.
Paul Kern, second son of Nicholas and Eliza- beth (Hartman) Kern, was born at the old homestead, at Emerald and in his boyhood days attended the public schools of the neighborhood and assisted his father upon the farm. After attaining his majority, he became a farmer on a tract of land adjacent to the Union cemetery, in the southwestern end of Slatington. He mar- ried Caroline Ash. Issue : Rosa and Wilson ·Kern.

ROBERT KERN, the third son of Nicholas and Elizabeth ( Hartman) Kern, was born Dec. 22, 1833, in Lehigh county, and was reared upon the farm, acquiring his education in the public schools. To that foundation he added by read- ing and observation and became well informed on current events and topics of general interest. He followed farming for many years, discontin- uing his farm operations in 1890. During the progress of the Civil War he was drafted, which entailed upon him an expense of $1,800.00. In 1871, Mr. Kern established a coal business in Franklin, Pa., having for a partner several years, Tilghman Kuntz, after which he took his son, Weston H., into partnership and the firm had an extensive patronage. Mr. Kern donated the land upon which was built the Evangelical church at Emerald. He also assisted in building the Slatington and Slateville Evangelical churches, and was always liberal in church benevolences. He was a trustee and treasurer of the Emerald church for many years. He was also a trustee and treasurer of the Slatington church. He was a tax collector and for three terms an assistant assessor; was a member of the Masonic order and also of the I. O. O. F.
Robert Kern married, in 1853, Miss Julia A. Peter, daughter of Joseph Peter, of Lehigh county, born July 23, 1833. Issue: Erasmus F., of whom below; Henrietta; Oliver F .; Ida, who married Rev. J. W. Roth; Flora (Mrs. O. S. Peters) ; Robert A .; and Weston H. Kern, of whom below. Mrs. Julia A. Kern, the widow of Robert, resides in the old homestead at Emer- ald, her daughter, Henrietta, caring for her and administering to her every need. Miss Kern is actively interested in every department of church work. She was for years a teacher in the Sun- day school.
Weston H. Kern, youngest son of Robert and Julia A. (Peters) Kern, was born August 5, 1872, at Emerald, Pa. He was educated in the public schools of the neighborhood and in 1891 at the age of 19 years, he became partner with his father under the firm name of Robert Kern & Son, dealers in coal, sand, cement, feed, etc., at Emerald.
At his father's retirement from business, in 1906, Weston H. became the sole proprietor. He improved his plant in 1907 by erecting a coal shed 30x120 feet. In 1910, he built an elevator having a capacity of 1,000 tons of coal, and being one of the most modern in that section. In poli- tics he is a Democrat and was registry assessor three terms and tax collector, two terms. He is a member of the P. O. S. of A., and the Knights of Malta. In this order the degree of Past Commander was conferred upon him at Perkasie,
Pa., in May, 1911. He is prominently identified with the Grace Evangelical church of Emerald and its Sunday school superintendent since 1905. He is very active in all departments of church. work and was for some years an exhorter.
Weston H. Kern married (first) Feb. 3, 1894, Flora Knecht, who died June 15, 1901, aged 26 years. Issue: Russell, Morris, Maude, died in infancy ; Paul, Weston and Flora.
He married (second) in 1905, Matilda Heis- ler, daughter of Elijah Heisler, and sister of Rev. Israel Heisler, of the Evangelical Church.
Elias Kern was the son of John George and Margaret (Wert) Kern. In early life he resided in Lower Slatington and owned much of the land now comprising the lower part of Slating- ton, He was a member, also an elder, of Frie- den's Reformed church, where he was buried.
He married Hannah Kern, daughter of Nich- olas and Hannah (Best) Kern. Nicholas Kern owned much of the land in what is now Washi- ington township, upon which are now the many rich slate quarries. Mr. and Mrs. Kern had issue: Dinah, died in childhood; Emma, married Lewis B. Geiger; Adam, lives with his brother ; Lewis; Lucy, married Charles Muth; Lewis, lives upon the old homestead; Benjamin W., of whom below; and Dennis, who died in infancy.
BENJAMIN W. KERN, the third son of Elias and Hannah (Kern) Kern, was born August 4, 1860, at Slatington, and was educated in the public schools, meanwhile assisting his father on the farm. In 1880, he farmed for his father one year, then he worked some time in the slate quarry. In 1884, he engaged in merchandising at Friedens, in Washington township, continu- ing there until 1892, when he removed to Slat- ington and continued his mercantile business to the present time (1913). His store is located at 920 Main street. In lower Main street, he and his sons conduct another store under the firm name of B. W. Kern & Sons. Mr. Kern is a director and the secretary of the school board. He is a member of the Jr. O. U. A. M., and the Knights of Malta. He and family are men- bers of St. John's Reformed church at Slating- ton, where he is also an elder. While resident at Friedens he served the church there as a deacon.
Benjamin W. Kern was married on Thanks- giving Day, 1879, to Sallie A. Newhard, daugh- ter of Peter and Harriet ( Reber) Newhard, of Washington township. Issue: George B., and Samuel B., of whom below; Effie J., married William Williams; Carrie M .; Rosa, who died in infancy ; and Dr. Thomas B. Kern, a gradu- ate of a Philadelphia Medical College, in 1911.

GEORGE B. KERN, the eldest son and first child of Benjamin and Sallie A. (Newhard) Kern, was born Feb. 29, 1880, at Slatington, Pa. He was educated in the public schools of his native town, and at an early age he assisted his father in his store and on the farm. On March 20, 1909, he became a member of the firm of B. W. Kern & Son, conducting a gen- eral store at 301 Lower Main street, Slatington. This firm has several employees and the store is located on the ground where stood the barn of his great grandfather, George Kern, years ago.
Mr. Kern is a member of the Jr. O. U. A. MI., and of the Reformed Church. He married Oct. 14, 1903, Daisy Peters, daughter of Wilson Peters. Issue: Ralph C., and Grace S. Kern.
Samuel B. Kern, the second son of Benjamin and Sallie A. (Newhard) Kern, was born May 8, 1884. He was educated in the public schools and the high school at Slatington, graduating in 1901. He attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, graduating in 1905. He then became a clerk in a Philadelphia drug store, and upon his return to Slatington, he became the manager of the Lehigh Drug Company, of that place, and about one year later purchased the Dr. John S. Mack drug store at 606 Main street, Slat- ington, which he now operates.
John Kern lived on a large farm near Emerald. The buildings stood at the Hazel Dell slate quarry. His farm embraced the very heart of the slate region, and contains the Wash- ington, Franklin, Trout Creek and other valu- able slate veins or beds. The slate was discov- ered after his day, and the property is now worth many hundred thousand dollars. The stone house in which he lived is now covered with de- bris from the Hazel Dell quarries. The boiler house of this company rests upon the original foundation of his barn. He died in 1839 or 1840, and he and Mrs. Kern were buried in the private graveyard on his farm. John Kern mar- ried a Miss Moyer. Issue: (1) Mollie, married Peter Keener; (2) Susanna, married John Hains, who went West; (3) Elizabeth, married Samuel Everett; (4) Daniel, who was a farmer at Emerald; (5) William, who had a farm near Slatedale; (6) Jonas, lived at Emerald; (7) Ga- briel, owned part of the homestead, and (8) Reu- ben Kern.
