Nathan; Benjamin; Reuben; Jacob, and two daughters.


Reuben Butterweck, son of John and Maria, was a native of Lower Macungie. He followed farming and was also a contractor and builder until his retirement. He was an active mem- ber of the United Brethren Church. He mar- ried Catharine Berger, born 1823, died 1906. Issue: (1) Rev. Francis J., of Lebanon, Pa .; (2) William H. (deceased) ; (3) Alfred; (4) Milton, died young; (5) Peter J., died while a student ; (6) Emma E., (deceased) married Alvin Wisser; (7) Jeremiah, of Oley; (8) Maria, (widow of William Butz; (9) Dr. Ol- iver L., of Bono, Ohio.


Alfred M. Butterweck, the third son of Reu- ben, was born Sept. 21, 1848 in Lower Ma- cungie township. He was educated in the com- mon schools and at the age of 19 commenced teaching and taught six terms. He subsequently engaged in the mercantile business at East Texas, continuing in this line until 1906, when he re- moved to Allentown.


In politics he is a Democrat. He is a member of the United Brethren church, and of the St. James Commandery, No. 68, of Allentown. He married, in 1873, Mary A. Miller. Issue: (1) Irving H., born May 5, 1874; (2) Clara K., born July 25, 1875; (3) Harry A.


HARRY A. BUTTERWECK, son of Alfred M., was born July 3, 1882, and educated in the pub- lic schools and at the age of 14 years became a clerk in his father's store continuing for two years, when he entered the employ of Breinig and Bachman, where he remained for 8 years. In 1908 he formed a partnership with Mr. Kum- mery, carrying on the contracting and building business in Allentown up to the present.


He married, Aug. 14, 1902, Mamie Scholl, a daughter of Charles E. G. and Rosa (Wieand) Scholl of Berks county. Their children are: Florence; Lamont; Flora; and Paul Butter- weck.


Joseph Butterweck, tradition states, came to America in the last quarter of the eighteenth cen- tury. He had first located in New Jersey, from thence he came to Montgomery county, Pennsyl- vania, where he is recorded by the first federal census in 1790. He had in that year three sons under sixteen years, and one daughter. Among his children was a son, Joseph, Jr., who was a farmer, miller, and operated a wool-carding mill in Hereford township, Berks county. He was married to Elizabeth Leiser, of Hereford town- ship. They were members of the Mennonite Church. Among their children were Joseph L. and Nathan.


Joseph L. Butterweck was born Jan. 1, 1821 ;


was educated in the public schools and in the Quakertown Academy. Afterward he taught school for fifteen terms in Berks and Montgom- ery counties. He was also an agriculturist until in 1878, when he retired and located in Mont- gomery county, near the line of Berks county. There he died on March 25, 1880, aged 59 years. He was prominently identified with the Evan- gelical Church, and was a moral force and a high- ly esteemed citizen of the community in which he lived. He was a Christian gentleman and was devoted to his home and family.


On May 31, 1856, he married Catharine Werstler, a daughter of Jacob and Catharine (Schane) Werstler. She was born Dec. 23, 1830, and died on Dec. 4, 1862. She is buried by the side of her husband on the cemetery at New Ber- linsville, Pa. Their children were:


Catharine Ann, born Aug. 5, 1857.


Emma W., born Sept. 5, 1858, died Jan. 3, I888.


Oliver W., born May 18, 1860, died Oct. 4, 1865.


Wesley W., born Oct. 23, 1861.


Nathan Butterweck, son of Joseph, Jr., and Elizabeth (Leiser) Butterweck, was born in Berks county, in 1834. He died at Allentown on Nov. 3, 1913, in his 79th year.


He learned the jewelry trade at Boyertown, after which he moved to Allentown and opened a jewelry store at 715 Hamilton street, and later he was in business at Freeland. After the death of his wife in 1912, he took up his residence with his sister-in-law, Mrs. Alice Leiby, of Allentown, and there he died. He was survived by two sons: William, of Philadelphia; and Nathan, of Flor- ida; one sister, Mrs. John Treichler, of Potts- town; and five grandchildren. Mr. Butterweck was a member of Bethany United Evangelical church.


BUTZ FAMILY.


The progenitor of this large and honored family is John Butz who, in company with 62 men, 200 persons all told, landed at Philadelphia November 9, 1738. According to the family Bible he was a native of Hertzogberg, near Kromanemberg, situated in the lower part of Bavaria. He is said to have died at Philadelphia February 23, 1750, and to have been survived by a son, Peter, and a daughter, Catharine.


Peter Butz (son of John) came to Longswamp soon after his arrival in America and located near Topton, where some of his descendants have since lived, until 1760, when he purchased and re- moved to a farm of 236 acres in the beautiful Macungie Valley, now Lower Macungie, and since the increase of his descendants now living

on farms adjoining the original homestead (still owned by the family) exceeding over 1,000 acres, has been and is being called "Butz a-Gass," Butz's Valley. He was one of the organizers of the Longswamp Church in 1748, having previous- ly been sent together with Jacob Long, Reformed, and two Lutheran representatives to Phila. to buy a tract of land for a Union church. The Lutherans taking advantage of their brethren secured the ground for a Lutheran Church and forthwith erected Lehigh Church previously or- ganized. Undaunted by this experience, ground was subsequently purchased on which the Long- swamp Reformed Church was erected.


On Oct. 22, 1743, he was married to Anna Barbara Carl, born Nov. 26, 1718, at Hessen, Nassau, Germany. She was a sister to Theobold Carl also one of the founders of the Longswamp Reformed congregation. He opened his family register thus, "Oct. 22, 1743, I, Peter Butz and Anna Barbara Carlin, entered the state of matri- money, God grant His blessings that we may dwell in peace and attain eternal life."


Peter Butz died March 18, 1780, and his wife March 6, 1795, both being buried at Longswamp. The old family Bible containing a record of his family is in possession of Dr. M. L. Bertolet, Mt. Penn, Pa., a descendant. Records in possession of the Berks County Historical Society contain a list of children with dates of baptism and names of sponsors, viz : Mary, Oct. 16, 1744, sponsors, Theobold Carl and wife; Catharine, Apr. 19, 1746, sponsor, Anna May Keider; John, Nov. 20, 1747, sponsors, Frederick Cassimer Miller and his mother, Anna Mary Graber; Samuel, Aug. 10, 1750, sponsors, Samuel Burger and wife ; Peter, Apr. 8, 1754, sponsors, Peter Keyser and wife; Elizabeth, Apr. 13, 1758, sponsors Philip Fenstermaker and wife, Magdalena Hellwig. She died soon after birth and the next one was again named Elizabeth, June 22, 1761, sponsors, Valentine Nongesser and wife, Catharine.


John Butz (son of Peter), was born Nov. 20, 1747, died on Jan. 7, 1827, was married to Maria Elizabeth Miller, Jan. 4, 1747-Feb. 12, 1827, and lived on the homestead in Lower Ma- cungie. He was a blacksmith by trade. When the second Longswamp Church ( 1780) was built he forged many of the nails that were used. They had the following children: (1) Abraham, see below. (2) John, Nov. 6 1771-Feb. 15, 1839, married March 10, 1794, to Catharine Schmoyer, born June 20, 1776, died on May 14, 1859, and lived on a farm adjoining the old homestead. They had (1) Reuben, born Aug. 1, 1806, died on Oct. 12, 1860, father of Reuben D., Samuel Esq., John, of Aller town; Marietta, wife of Charles Dresher, Allentown ; Caroline, married


to Jacob Deisher, Maxatawny, and Sarah, mar- ried to William Deisher of Lower Macungie.


James ( April 11, 1815-May 29, 1881), mar- ried to Mary Butz, granddaughter of Sam Butz III (June 28, 1795-April 7, 1824), and lived at Topton. They had John, Mary, Lewis, Charles, Eliza, Edwin, Caroline, Sarah, Kate, Henry, James, Ephraim and William B.

Catharine (June 10, 1803-February 22, 1829), both of whom were married to George Ludwig. A son George, Jr., went west. Eliza- beth, married to George Schlicher. Rachel, married to Jacob Kuhns, parents of Rev. Kuhns, of Nazareth, Pa.


Peter, March, 22, 1773 (baptized by Rev. Wagner, sponsors Peter Butz (III), and wife Magdalena Romig), died April 10, 1847. He was married December 25, 1804 to Elizabeth Schmoyer (November 18, 1785-May 20, 1866). They lived on the old homestead in Lower Ma- cungie, and had ten children.


Stephen, (June 8, 1808-December 23, 1895), was married to Mrs. Rebecca Schwartz, January 30, 1821 -May 1, 1897. They lived for a time on the old homestead in Lower Macungie. Issue, Allen P., John, Henry, Amanda, wife of Charles Hottenstein, Allentown, and Mary, wife of Frank Litchenwalter, Chalfonte, Pa. Frank, married to Kate Larose. They lived in Lower Saucon where he died before 1850. They had the following children :- Henry T .; Jonathan, late of Breinigsville; Dr. Peter, Allen- town; Frank, late of Allentown; Mary, widow of Joel Keck; Elmira, widow of Henry Schmoyer, Lower Macungie; Miss Sarah; Alfred and Edwin. Anna, born March 28, 1812, died April 25, 1874, married Daniel Leibensperger, (January 1, 1799- July 7, 1867). They had four children: Stephen. February 5, 1832-June 1I, 1887, married Hannah Susan Deisher, issue; Eugene married to Alice Guldin; Cyrus, who died small; Stephen married Susan Warmkessel; Rev. James O., married Fi- anna Miller; Alice E., divorced from Henry Heil- man; Rev. Ambrose, Lebanon, married Elizabeth Frederick, Lebanon. Sarah Ann, born March 20, 1834, died March 16, 1891, married Samuel Dresher. Longswamp; issue, Alfred D., married Amanda Col- ver, Allentown. Roella, who died in infancy. Cath- arine, born November 12, 1863, married to Levi S. Litchtenwalter. They had issue: Elmer, deceased ; Annie S., married to Adam Butz; Alfred, married to Mary J. Young. James, and four other children who died in infancy.


Aaron, January 1, 1810-January 11, 1833. married to Elizabeth Kemmerer, January 26, 1817-February 17, 1850. They had the following children : Charles, November 3, 1836-August 22, 1853; Eliza Amanda, June 28, 1834-July 4. 1897, married Henry Hillegas, Allentown; Benneville, August 5, 1840, lived at Pennsburg: Alfred. Allentown, father of Dr. J. Treichler Butz; Anna Maria, April 10, 1836-June 24, 1848; Mary Ann, married to George Bobb, late of Pennsburg, now married to Charles Miller, Al- lentown.

Peter, January 28, 1828-April 4, 1912, married to Caroline Haas. They lived in Lower Macungie, near to the old homestead. They had Hettie, wife of Daniel Dengler and Melara, married to John Al- bright, late of Trexlertown.


Son died in infancy.


Jonathan, February 28, 1771-April 14, 1842, married January 8, 1804, to first wife, Elizabeth Dankel, October 20, 1787-January 17, 1827; second wife, Catharine Wenner. They lived in Lower Macungie in Butz's Valley. His chil- dren with the first wife were:


Jonathan, married to Miss Wagenhorst, who lived in Longswamp and had issue: Emeline, married to John Levan, of Reading; Elizabeth, married to Jacob Frederick, Allentown; Jane, married to John Weida, Longswamp, Susanna, married to Daniel Weida; Jonathan who was married; was killed in the battle of Gettysburg; Jacob, who is married and lives in Reading; Alfred, was married to Mary Long; Mary, who lives in California; Charles, lives near Egypt.


Stephen, September 17, 1807-November 8, 1834, Married to Miss Mabry. They had issue: Au- gustus ; Francis, who went to Iowa and William.


Mary Ann, October 30, 1809-March 16, 1844, mar- ried to Peter Walbert, November 14. 1805-January 7, 1886. They had the following children: Henry, who died in infancy; Anna Maria, wife of Jerry Leh, Buffalo; Eliza, widow of Henry Shankweiler, Bethlehem; Angelina, married to the late Captain James W. Weida, of Longswamp, both deceased; Levi, of Allentown.


Mannasses, February 22, 1812-October 13, 1889, married first time to Fanny Krause, May 28, 18II- October 6, 1839, and second time to Elizabeth Wen- ner, January 29, 1822-June 25, 1864. He is the father of the following children : Beneville, of Al- lentown; Levi, of Wescoesville; Uriah, of Phila- delphia; Eliza, married to Henry Rohrbach, de- ceascd; Rebecca, married Henry Benfield, Long- swamp; Ida, married Harvey Romig, of Allentown ; Catharine, married Zeph Wuss, of Allentown; El- len Jane, married Charles Bortz, Topton; Sarah, married William B. Shafer, Nazareth.

Barbara, January 10, 1769-December 30, 1851, married to Jacob Breinig, May 27, 1767- March 16, 1823. They lived in Upper Ma- cungie. They had the following children :


Jonathan, January 31, 1802-April 3, 1881, married May 9, 1825, to Elizabeth Schwoyer, March 31, 1805-December 1I, 1870. They had the following children: Sarah, married to Jacob Wagenhorst near Shamrock and to John Geisinger, late of Alburtis ; there were three children: Charles, November 10, 1826, married to Eliza Ruth, living on the old Breinig homestead, Upper Macungie. They have IO children : James, January 8, 1831, married No- vember, 1866, to Catharine Weiler, late of Allen- town. They had one daughter. Miss Maria, Oc- tober 13, 1830-January 27, 1854. Eliza, September 3, 1836, widow of D. Y. Bittenbender, near Lehigh Church. . They had nine children. Rebecca, August 17, 1839, widow of Francis Yeagle, Lower Macun- gie. They had no children. Elizabeth, who married Nathan Grim and moved to Milton, Pa., where they raised a family.

Samuel Butz, August 10, 1750-August 17, 1821, son of Peter II, was born and reared in Longswamp. He was a farmer and blacksmith. When the second Longswamp church was erect- ed he made all the iron for the structural work. He lived on the original homestead near Topton. On Dec. 13, 1774, he was married to Anna Maria Romig, May 31, 1754-February 20, 1813, of Lower Macungie. They had the fol- lowing children :


Peter, October 29, 1775-August 19, 1874. He was married to Susanna Bieber. He followed the trade of his father, blacksmithing, and con- ducted a farm in Whitehall.


They had the following children: Samuel, of North Whitehall, who had William, deceased ; Peter; Louisa; Katie. Egedius (September 30, 1805-May 28, 1890), on March II, 1827, was married to Elizabeth Bieber (July 10, 1810-October 16, 1877), and lived in Maxatawny. They had: Abraham, December 12, 1827-December 17, 1827; Mary (March 28, 1829-February 19, 1913),, }married to David Kemp. This union was blessed with the following children : Cyrus, deceased; Susan, Eliza, Hannah. Lewis, Sarah, George, Louisa, Charles, Morris and Milton. Fianna, January 12, 1832-January 14, 1836. Susanna, December 15, 1833-January 3, 1836. Lo- vina (b. June II, 1835), was married to Kaston Huber, of New York City. They had Alfred, Ed- win, Katie, William, Clara, Ernest and Lovina. Lewis B. (b. January 27, 1837), is married to Catherine Kieffer and lives at Kutztown. They have Amos; John, deceased; Ella, wife of Seldon Gernet, Allentown; Alfred, Philadelphia, and Ida, married to Wm. Smith, of Philadelphia. Sarah Ann (b. February 22, 1839), is married to Henry Koller. They had two children, both deceased. Peter Samuel, born May 19, 1841, single. Anna Elizabeth (January 18, 1843), married to William


DeTurck, Kutztown, issue: Alvin, of Kutztown; Eugene, of Kutztown. Louise Catharine (b. April 18, 1846), is married to Dr. J. R. Levan, of Phila- delphia, issue: Sallie, deceased; Frank, deceased; and Dr. George, of Philadelphia. Caroline Ellen (b. April 7, 1848), is married to J. Daniel Sharadin, Kutztown, issue: Catharine Maria, dec .; Prof. Hen- ry William, Ellen M. Miller, Howard S., Esq., Francis E., Dr. Ralph C., Clarence, dec. Miss Clara Matilda, May 7, 1851, Kutztown. Elmira L. (b. May 15, 1853), is married to Henry Roth, Philadel- phia. They have one son, Irwin.


Catharine, March 25, 1777, - married to Jacob Seibert. They lived in District and had no children.


John, April 27, 1779-August 19, 1874, mar- ried to Anna Yeager, of Oley, January 12, 1788-August 24, 1828. They lived in Long- swamp. They had eight children of whom three reached majority :


Nathan, December 29, 1806, moved to Schuylkill Haven, where he raised a large family. Jacob, July 31, 1808, married Elizabeth Christman, May 28, 1809-November, 1895. They lived in Oley and had the following children: Daniel C., August 26, 1831 w,ho lives in Oley township. He was married to Susan D. Hoch. They have one daughter, Mary, widow of William Marquette. Catharine, November 28, 1812-June 16, 1886, mar- ried March 4, 1813, to Peter Hensinger, of Hen- singersville, Pa. They had ten children: Joseph, February 6, 1842-February 6, 1900, married to Mary Ann Desh. They had the following children : Jane, married to Joseph Schmoyer, of Alburtis; Sarah, married to D. K. Keller, Esq., of Alburtis; James, deceased ; Peter, Allen, William, Alice, all of Al- burtis. Mary A., May 3, 1836-September 6, 1909. married to John Saul, both deceased. They lived at Alburtis and had no children. Susan, January 16, 1830-May 17, 1869, married to William Jacob, near Alburtis. They had Henry, John, James, Oswin and Frank. Reuben, who died young. David, mar- ried to Catharine Marsteller, grand daughter of Elizabeth Butz, daughter of John III. Peter, who lives at Allentown. James F., October 5. 1850- January 28, 1896. Eliza, December 28, 1846, wife of James Knedler, Alburtis. They have Erwin, Alice, wife of Rev. George Hertzog, of Phoenix- ville, and Dr. Warren, of Mascon, Pa. Catharine Anna, January 30, 1834-November 23, 1901, married to Charles Shankweiler, late of Alburtis. They had Allen, deceased; Peter, Harrison, Morris, Howard, Hershel, Martha, Florence, Mantana and Agnes. Sarah A., December, 1848-September 14, 1898, mar- ried to Sassaman Kline, late of Emans. They had Elvin, Ida, Mary, Harvey, James, Cora, Carrie, George. The latter two died in infancy.

Esther, December 30, 1783-August 2, 1848, married to David Weiser, August 3, 1784-Feb- ruary II, 1728. They lived near Bowers and had the following children :

They had the following children: Emma, married to Moses Grim, Bowers ; Andorah, married to David Hamsher, Bowers; Je- rosa, married to Peter Kieffer, of Kutztown; Miss Louisa, deceased November 8, 1907; Mary, married to Jonathan DeLong, Bowers; Ezra, married Miss Sharffer, Chicago; Daniel, deceased.


Hettie, October 19, 1818, married Jonas Miller. They had the following children : Jemina, married to Dr. E. J. Fogel, late of Fogelsville, and Sallie, wife of Dr. Conrad, of Robesonia.


David, June II, 1822-January 25, 1899, married to Catharine Fisher. They had issue: Sarah Amanda, married to John Schwoyer, of Kutztown, R. F. D .; Alvin, married to Elizabeth Henning, Topton; Ellen, married to Clarence Levan, Topton; Charles and Anne, died in infancy.


William, married Miss Bieber. They had Sarah, David, Daniel, Meliam, William, who died in in- fancy.
