OLMSTED'S PATENT STOVE,
MANUFACTURED BY
SAMUEL LLOYD,
And Sold,
Wholesale and Retail,
AT THE GIRARD BUILDINGS, 406 MARKET STREET.
The objects aimed at in the construction of this Stove are-to be simple, so that it can be easily managed-to be quickly kind- led-to be capable of affording a mild or intense heat, according to the weather-to preserve the air of the apartment pure and wholesome-to avoid all inconveniences from dust, and finally to be cheap, durable, and economical in the use of fuel. How far this apparatus fulfils these conditions, may be inferred from the following certificates and recommendations.
Extract from an article published in the Franklin Journal, as the result of some experiments on Temperature, connected with the use of PROF. OLMSTED'S STOVE, by J. Griscom, L. L. D.
After "registering" many interesting and important facts in reference to the Stove, he adds : "But there are two other ad- vantages in the construction which Professor Olmsted has adopt- ed, First, by increasing the extent of heated surface, so as to prevent the iron from ever becoming so hot as to lose its polish by oxidation, and thereby not only to become itself rapidly dete- riorated, but also greatly to injure the quality of the air. Second, the cold air which enters the room, and necessarily forms the lower stratum, flows towards the stove, and ascending in the open and heated cylinder of the radiator, forms a rising column of warm air, which by its diffusion produces a mild summer heat through- out the chamber, rendering unnecessary the evaporation of water to counteract the usual deleterious effects of a hot stove. I found on one occasion the temperature of the air in this heated column to be 150 degrees, while at the same time the thermometer, with its bulb resting on the last joint of the stove pipe, sunk to 110 degrees, the thermometer in the room being then 70 degrees, and outside of the house 36 degrees. Both the furnace and the radi- ator may be too hot to be endured by the hand, while the end of the pipe remains barely warm."

THE CONCAVE SELF-SHARPENING PLOUGH.
WILLIAM BEACH, (THE PATENTEE,) 424 MARKET STREET, PHILADELPHIA,
Keeps constantly on hand the above superior PLOUGHS, of different sizes. These Ploughs are lighter draft, and turn stub- ble, weeds or manure under better, without choking, than any other kind, and they save the trouble of going to the Smithshop, and four-fifths of the expense of other Ploughs. The Inventor is of opinion that no other kind would be used, if the good qua- lities of these were known, and he also offers the above Plough in contest with any other kind, Five Hundred Dollars against One Hundred, not desirous of winning money, but of showing the great improvement in the most useful tool in the world. He also keeps Cultivators, or Hoe Harrows, and Straw Cutters, of the most approved kind. Those wishing to purchase would do well to call and examine before they purchase elsewhere.

STOVE.
For parlours and halls, it is far preferable to a Grate, and more durable and ornamental, with an opening to see the fire. It gives a regular and pleasant heat, avoids the dust and ashes, and re- quires very little attention, for when the urn is filled with coal it supplies itself until it is burnt out; and the small coal- without the dust taken out will make heat enough for a large parlour. Any one, after one week's trial, if they do not suit, will be at liberty to bring them back, and receive their money. Also an assortment of other stoves. All orders punctually attended to, and thankfully received.

It has been the study of the inventor for the last three years to perfect the art, which he feels confident he has accomplished in the production of the Measuring Machine, the superiority of which, over any other method, he holds himself ready to prove by trial to any who may doubt the fact. All coats made at this establishment are warranted to give entire satisfaction, both as regards fit and workmanship, in default of which the money will be refunded.

TO MANUFACTURERS, MILL OWNERS AND OTHERS INTERESTED IN WATER POWER, THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES.
The undersigned having become sole owner of the Patent Right of Abbott's Hy- draulic Engine, by an assignment of the original patent, reserving the states of New Hampshire and Vermont, and having at great expense applied the principles of said Engine, in such a manner as to produce from equal quantities of water acting in simi- lar situations, at least twenty per cent more power than is produced by the best con- structed over shot wheel now in use. T'en of the above Hydraulic Engines being now in operation, propelling Cotton and Woolen Machinery, Paper Mills, &c. &c. Some of which have been in successful operation for more than three years, which time is considered a proper test of the principles and operation of the same, as well as to form a tolerable correct judgment of their durability. This Engine is applicable to all situations where a fall of five feet and upwards, to almost any extent can be had, and to all purposes of manufacturing, and is susceptible of being built from five to almost an indefinite number of horses power. Practice having now fully proved the proportions of the work safe, to such an extent that the subscriber challenges a trial of strength and regularity of motion, with any other water wheel of equal power now in use. This patent is claimed as an improvement on the chain of buckets as patented by a Mr. Cooper, in 1784. Explanations and engravings of which may be seen by reference to Rees's Cyclopaedia, Nicholson's Operative Mechanic, &c. The accom- panying cut represents an Engine erected by the subscriber for Copeland Boyd, Esq. of Bethlehem, Pa. on the Lehigh Canal, fifty miles from the city of Philadelphia; where all who may wish to acquaint themselves with the practical operation of the Engine are respectfully invited to call, examine and decide for themselves in accor- dance with the evidence produced from the operation. This machine is of a me- diuin size, and is used for propelling Engines for the grinding of rags, for the manu- facture of paper, which service for water wheels, is considered by Millwrights to be the most trying of any resistance applicable to them. It is therefore believed, that should the Hydraulic Engine operate satisfactorily in such cases, that there could no longer remain a doubt why it should not operate with equal certainty for all other manufacturing purposes. The reasons urged by the subscriber as a ground of justifi- able preference over other wheels are, first, the Hydraulic Engine requires but about two thirds the water to drive them, required by other wheels of the same power-its motion is much more uniform and steady, and is less liable to impediments from ice aud frost, and to be retarded by back water, as it presents much less surface. And its velocity is as 2 to 8, the resistance being as the squares of the velocity, which makes ? the resistance in the one instance 4, and the other 64. It requires but about one third : the room of the overshot or breast wheels, and does not require the expense of wheel : pits, or so much time to build or put them in operation. They are better adapted to : high falls, and falls so high as cannot be used by other wheels the whole distance, : and are capable of being made more durable.
Its effect is nearly equal to the whole specific gravity of the whole quantity of wa- ter multiplied into the whole fall, and is capable of being located more safe and secure from inundations.
The subscriber invites manufacturers, millwrights and all others interested in water power. to an examination of specimens of the work, at 394 GIRARD Row, where per- sous will be in attendance at all times to give explanations or any other information required relating thereto. NATHANIEL RICHARDSON.
