THIS COMPANY, organized in 1846, on a system entirely Mutual, furnishes Insurance in all he various forms, and to meet all the various contingencies for which Life Insurance is desired, at he actual cost to the policy holder. There is no Stock or Guaranty Fund, to absorb the profits, but ll the surplus is annually allocated to the policy holders, in proportion to the amount of the pre- nium they pay, and may be appropriated to the payment of rencial premiums, after the first four ears.

Some of the Important Reasons why this Company should be Preferred.

It offers abundant SECURITY, in a large accumulated Fund, derived from Premiums, amount- ng to over Four Millions of Dollars.

Its ECONOMY in the management of business permits large dividends to policy holders, which ave averaged 50 per cent. per annum.

Its DIVIDENDS are ANNUAL, and are paid during the life, of the assured, in cash to those who pay their premiums in cash, or applied in canceling the notes of those who pay their premium artly by note. Nearly $200,000 have been thus refunded to policy holders during the past year. It is prompt in PAYMENT OF LOSSES.

It ACCOMMODATES the insured in the settlement of their premiums on Life policies, by receiving a note for one-half, when the premium amounts to $50 or more,-thus furnishing insurance 'or double the amount, for nearly the same cash payments, as is required in an " ALL CASH COMPANY."

Much has been recently written and extensively circulated, by a prominent Life Insurance Com- any, condemning the credit or half-note system, as practiced by this and some other prosperous Companies. The illustrations accompanying those attacks explanatory of the system, exhibit either in inexcusable ignorance of the plan, or a wanton effort to mislead and prejudice those who seek insurance upon the most equitable and economical plan. The explanations thus published to illus- rate the half-note system, do not, it is believed, apply to any Company in the country, certainly not in the least degree to the CONNECTICUT MUTUAL, in which there can not be an accumulation of premium notes beyond four half premiums; as the dividends apply to cancel those notes after the first four payments. Parties are not, however, required to give a premium note to this Com- pany ; but, if preferred, mnay pay all cash, in which case, their dividends are applied to a reduction of the premium.

The Directors have ordered the dividend of 1858 to be paid during the current year, as the renewals become due and are paid-by reduction of the premium of those who have paid all cash, or canceling the notes of those who have given notes for one-half.

Life Insurance Co. OF NEW YORK.

Philadelphia Agency-400 Walnut St., F. RATCHFORD STARR, Agent.

The Cash Assets of this Company exceed EIGHT MILLIONS OF DOLLARS, All of which belong to the Insured.

The investments are in first Mortgages on Real Estate, worth, in each case, at least double the amount loaned, and in Government securities. The solidity and security of this disposition of the Company's funds, cannot be overrated.

Being a strictly mutual Company, ALL THE PROFITS ARE DIVIDED AMONG THE INSURED, and may be added to the amount insured, or applied in REDUCTION OF PREMIUM.

The business is confined to insurance on lives. The transactions of this Company are exclusively Cash. Notes are not taken in payment of Premium; and hence form no part of the Assets of the Company.

The Rates of Premium are LOWER than charged by many other Companies, and the dividends have been GREATER. After payment of two years' premiums, the Company will purchase the Policy, should the insured wish to dispose of it, or a paid up Policy (upon which no premium is payable), will be given in lieu thereof.

The proportion of Cash Assets to the amount at risk is greater than that of any other Life Insurance Company in the United States.

PHILADELPHIA. E. C. & J. BIDDLE & CO, A. MCELROY & CO. PRINTED BY C. SHERMAN & SON. 1862.

Entered, according to Act of Congress, in the year 1862,

BY A. MCELROY,

In the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States, in and for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

PREFACE.

THE twenty-fifth edition of the Philadelphia City Directory, compiled by the undersigned, is at a late date presented to the public with the confident hope that it will be found so far useful as to be worth at least the amount of the subscription price.

At the usual season for canvassing, so little encouragement was extended to the work, that it was thought best to postpone its publication beyond the annual season of its issue, and, by an especial effort, endeavor to secure an amount of patronage at least equivalent to the cost of canvassing, printing and binding. This being attained, the undersigned is glad to be able to preserve the regular series of his Directory, although out of the ordinary season of publication.

The size of the Directory has been reduced; but it will be found sufficiently extensive to embrace most, if not all of the business community and principal housekeepers of the city, and no doubt will prove quite as useful as if extended to double the number of names it now contains. This reduction is mainly owing to the very great number of young men absent from the city in the volunteer service of their country, whose names have heretofore been found in the Directory, and the omission of a large number of names of females and others, occupying houses in which from three to ten families reside only for a very limited period. The names taken in Camden have also been incorporated with the city names, and will not be found, as heretofore, in a separate department. Besides, the business department, as well as the miscellaneous, have been greatly reduced by the omission of matter not thought to be of sufficient importance to the public generally to warrant the cost of publication. In addition, the two previous editions, 1860 and 1861, contained the names of all the farmers, butchers and dealers in our numerous market houses, most of whom live in the country. These have been omitted, as not properly belonging to a City Directory. The names of those only of this class residing in the city have been inserted in the present edition.

The mechanical execution of the Directory for 1862 needs no word of commendation from me, and I beg to close this brief preface with the hope that my unwearied efforts for the twenty- fifth year will be duly appreciated by the community. The compilation and arrangement of a Directory is attended with many difficulties, much labor, and with a small recompense in return. The whole, however, of this edition, including printing, binding, &c., has been accomplished in less than sixty days-a shorter time than in any other year.
