PREFACE.

To canvass a large city like Philadelphia, containing a population of nearly 600,000 inhabitants, scattered over a territory of about 288 square miles, to obtain the names of business people and housekeepers, together with young men residing at home and iu boardinghouses, and to compile from over 200,000 names, written indiscrimi- nately on slips, the number usually published, so as to avoid duplicates and other inaccuracies,-may be considered by the inexperienced quite an easy matter. But after the annual experience of twenty-eight years, the compiler hesitates not to state that it requires an amount of physical activity and strength scarcely to be estimated.

Then, too, difficulties are to be surmounted. These meet the canvasser at almost every door. The man of business is engaged with his customer; the clerk has long and numerous invoices to complete in a given time, and if perchance the canvasser may find some one having leisure enough to give information, he is doubtful as to whether the name is Joseph or James, John Smith or John Smyth, whether the number of the dwelling is 920 Green street or 920 Coates street. Then, too, he is not certain whether it would be agreeable to the proprietor of the place of business to have all the clerks located at 520 Market street, and finally refers the canvasser to the dwelling, all the clerks, salesmen, and bookkeepers being too busy to give information at the store. The canvasser does the best he can, and makes his appli- cation at the dwelling of the citizen. The bell is rung, and the party inside responds. The question is put, " Who resides in this house ?" The reply is, "Mr. Pierce." "The first name ?" Believes it to be Richard. "Can you say how it is spelled ?" No. " Will you inquire of Mrs. Pierce ?" The lady is too much engaged, and sends word to the canvasser to call at 520 Market street. To this exceptions are taken, but of no avail, so that whether the name is Pierce, or Peirce, or Pearce, remains to be settled by the canvasser, subject to the revision of the compiler. An- other house is visited, the same inquiry made, but the only response is, "Sure you are drafting." The canvasser attempts to reason with the respondent, but in vain ; the door is closed without ceremony. And thus from door to door the same diffi- culties are to be encountered and overcome. Nor is this all. The utter carelessness of a majority in reference to the matter at all is not among the least : perhaps it is the greatest obstruction to the publication of a more correct City Directory ; besides many persons are out of the city, and information has to be obtained as best the canvasser can. These, and other difficulties which might be named, superabounded this year. The "draft" seemed to be the terror of all classes, and in no year have there been so many refusals to give names. The compiler, however, is glad to say that he has accomplished his work, and now presents the Philadelphia City Directory for 1864 to the favorable judgment of the public, and asks for the substantial aid which it needs.

The continued high price of printing paper, and the very great advance of the price of labor and all material used, have made the work much more costly than usual, yet the price remains the same.
