643. Matthias Tshudy. I, r. ii, 15. Oct. 25. He was born in Lititz, Aug. 9, 1771, a son of Christian and Eva Barbara (Kiesel) Tshudy. Left an orphan at an early age, he was adopted by Peter Kreiter and treated as a son. In his eighth year he was placed in the Brethren's house under the special guardianship of Brother Chitty, superin- tendent of the weaving department. June 10, 1792 he married Catharine Blickensderfer. Besides his trade of weaving, he caried on, very extensively, the manufacture of chip hats and bonnets,- made nowhere else in America. In 1848 he and his wife celebrated their Golden Wedding. He took an active interest in the affairs of the congregation, was a frequent member of the Aufseher Collegium, a choir-singer and trombonist, and in 1837 presented a new pulpit to the church. At his own expense he laid out, planted and enclosed the church-square. Of his six children he was survived by one son and two daughters.

Kum- mer in 1847, and served with him in the missions of St. Cruz and Jamaica seven years; returned to this country in 1854, served the church at Brooklyn, L. I., four years and moved to Lancaster in

1858, where she died "a happy and triumphant death," of brain fever, aged thirty-two years and five months.
707. Charlotte Sophia Reinke. 2, 1. xxiii, 7. June 20. She was born in Nisky, Germany, Nov. 20, 1802, a daughter of Bishop Christian Gottlieb Hueffel. Came to this country with her parents and only sister in 1818. Married the widower, the Rev. Samuel Reinke, in 1827. With him she served the congregations of Graceham, Lan- caster, Nazareth, Bethlehem, twice, York, and Lititz. Their union was blest with seven children, of whom two daughters and one son, the Rt. Rev. Clement Leander Reinke, survived her. "She calmly and sweetly fell asleep in Jesus, in the full hope of a blessed im- mortality."

(Reinke) Beck. Wife of William A. Hammer, of Cressona, Schuyl- kill Co., where she died of puerperal fever. Her infant, Annie Beck, followed its mother Aug. 12, and was buried in the same grave. She had five children. Before her marriage, a soprano singer in the church-choir.

751. John William Rauch. 3, 1. xxiii, 13. March II. Born in Lititz, Aug. 18, 1790; a son of John Henry and Anna Christina (Stohler) Rauch. In 1814 he married Barbara Rudy, who died in 1825. His second wife was Anna Rosina Busse, of Nazareth, and his third union was with the widow Lucetta (Ritter) Wolle. Five children in the first marriage, two in the second. A confectioner and baker ; in the latter line he was the first maker, here, of bretzels. He served the congregation as a member of the Aufseher Collegium and as a Trustee; and for the larger part of his life was prominent in church-music as a tenor singer, trombonist (soprano), and first violinist. Remembrance, yet unfaded, remains to many, of the fine old gentleman, in his drooping cloak, with his handsome ivory- rimmed violin under his arm, on his way to play in lovefeast. A real poet, he touched his lyre often to enhance the interest of a festal occasion, to comfort the mourner, and to make happier by his beautiful lines the young bridal couple.
