lately erected, in a modern ftile, and are acceffable every day in the week, except funday. Here the man of learning may confult the works of the remoteft ages, and trace hit- tories, arts and fciences from their infancy to this prefent ftate of improvement, and the mechanic, the labourer, the flu- dent or apprentice may be fupplied with books to improve their minds or amufe them in their vacant hours at home. The company conffts of fome hundreds of proprictors, in- corporated by charter, who pay ten fhillings annually for the purchafe of new books and defraying incidental cx- pences, twelve directors are annually cholen. who manage the concerns of the company and keep a correfpondence with Europe, from whence they are regularly fupplied with new publications of reputation and merit.

The corporation have lately ordered the ftreets, lanes and alleys to be marked at every interfection with each c- ther, and the houfes to be numbered. The names painted on boards, with an index band pointing to the progreffion of the numbers, are already affixed at the corners of the main ftreets, and the others will be marked in the courfe of the fpring, fo that with the aid of this Directory, a ftranger may find without difficulty, any houfe whofe ftreet and number is known.

The numbers in the ftreets, &c. lying Faft and Weft, be- gin with No. 1 on the North and No. 2 on the South fides at the river Delaware or other Eaftern beginning of the ftreet, and proceed regularly in the excefs of two Weft- ward, hence all the houfes marked with odd numbers are on the North fides of the way, and all thofe marked with even numbers on the fouth.

The numbers in the ftreets lying North and South, begin at the feveral corners of High Street, with No. t on the Eaft and No. 2 on the Weft fides. High Street is confde- red as the common line of divifion, and the part of thefe ftreets lying North of it, has the addition of North to its name, and thofe lying South, the addition of South, the numbers proceed in each ftreet from No. I on the Haft corner and No. 2 on the Weft corner, in excefs of two Northward and Southward from High Street, having all the odd numbers, on the Eaft and all the even numbers. on the Weft fides.

Thus if a ftranger wifhes to find any boufe in a main frect, as No. 29, South Front Street, he will know from the odd number that it is on the Eaft fide of the way, from the word South, that it. is Southward from High Street, from the word Front that is the main ftreet neareft to the river, and cannot be at a lofs to difcover the refidence of any perfon whofe name in the Directory, calls for a main ftreet.

When the perfon fought refides, in any other ffreet,

lane or alley, the cuquirer muft turn to the alphabetical list of the leder ftreets &c. where he will find opposite to its uame the main freet from whence it begins, its direc- tion whether Łat or Well by the letters E. & W. or North aud South by the letters N. & S. prefixed, and proceeding to the interfection of it, he will difcover the progress of the numbers and follow them till he finds the houfe fought.

I hus to find No. 60, Union Street, look under letter U in the lift and union Street will be found to begin from the Welt fide of Front Street between Spruce and i ine streets, and extending L'. & W. acrofs three fquares, to terminate at the caft fide of Fourth Street ; now if you come to any interfection of Union Street y ou examine the firft number y ou fee ; you know by the even number 60, that you are to feek on the South fide, by the index hand the progrefs of the numbers, and by the firft number you meet, whether you are to go Weftward for a higher or Eaftward for a lower number.

The like modes ferve for the leffer ftreets, &c. in a N. & S. direction, except that the odd numbers are on the Eaft and the even numbers on the Weft fide.

l'ile city within a few years paft has experienced a very remarkable revolution in refpect to the healthinefs of its inhabitants ; the bill of mortality proves that the number of deaths has confiderably decreafed fince the year 1 783, not- withstanding the great increafe of its population; this change in favour of health and life is afcribed by phyficians to the co-operation of the following caufes. ift, The arch- ing the dock, whereby a very noxious and offenfive nuifance was removed. 2d, The cultivation of the lots adjoining and partly farrounding the city, whereby another extenfive fource of putrid exhalations is dried up. adly, An increafed care in cleanfing the ftrects. 4thly, An increafe of horticul- ture, and confequently greater confumption of vegetable aliments sthly. The inftitution of the difpenfary, which has extended medical aid to many hundreds in a year, who either perifhed for the want of it or were facrificed by quacks. 6thly, The more improved flate of phyfic, whence feveral difeafes formerly fatal in moft inftances are better underfood and treated, and therefore more generally cu- red. And 7thly, From a general diffusion of knowledge among all caffes of people from our libraries, our nu- merons focieties, monthly, weekly and daily publications, whence the people at large are better acquainted than formerly with the means of preferving their health, as may be exemplified in one infrance : there was but one death laft fummer from drinking cold water, whereas fome years ago twenty has not been an uncommon number from this Angle caufe. It is with pleafure that the cditor gives this

information from the beft authority, and he hopes that the fame or other proximate caufes will continue this valuable bleffing, an increafe of healthinefs to his fellow citizens.

Thefe notes, concering the city it is hoped, are free from any material error ; fhould any be difcovered, the editor will thankfully receive hints from any of his fellow citizens, and correct them, or fupply deficiencies in an enfuing e- dition ; and by a communication of future particulars, he hopes the information to be conveyed, will be rendered hereafter more interefting.
