In those departments of this valuable institution, where it is necessary on account of the number of students, suitable tutors of approved abilities are employed.


The university is an elegant and spacious building in Ninth street, between Market and Chesnut streets .- Connected with which there has lately been erected a large and conve- nient house, under the direction of the celebrated architect, B. H. Latrobe, for the accommodation of the students in me- dicine ; which is now in a very flourishing state, and is con- sidered as equal to any of the oldest seminaries in Europe.


The medical students amount to two hundred and seventy, and are yearly increasing. They come from the West In- dies, Canada, and from all parts of the United States. 'The degree of Doctor in Medicine is conferred on about thirty gentlemen, every year in this institution.


The students in the various departments of the arts, medi. cine, &c. belonging to the university are between five and six hundred.

PENNSYLVANIA HOSPITAL,


ON WHICH IS ENGRAFTED A LYING-IN HOSPITAL, Supported by Legacies and Contributions-not Taxes.


Patients to be admitted, are the sick in body and mind, except with contagious diseases ; those are attended as out patients, from the hospital dispensary.


None but the poor are to be visited as out patients, of whom eight hundred and thirty were attended, and supplied with medicines, gratis, last year.


Fifty paupers are allowed at one time in the house, but no more ; of whom twenty only are to be lunatics. The funds being insufficient to support a larger number, the charity will be extended in proportion to future legacies, &c .- In the mean time the affluent are received from three to eight dol- lars a week, and the profit of their board is added to the in D 2

terest of the capital stock, and the income of both expend- ed in support of the poor.


The doors of the hospital are opened at all hours to re- ceive accidents, such as fractures and bruises ; provided they are brought within twenty-four hours of the time when such accidents happen-and no security is required, or paper, of admission, in those cases.


In all other cases, application must be made ; first, to one of the attending physicians ; secondly, to one of the managers, whose names are published in Poulson's paper ..


And on the fourth and seventh day of every week, those managers and physicians attend at the hospital from 10 to 12 o'clock in the morning, to receive and discharge patients; where, if application is then made, it will save trouble.


Legacies are given in the corporate name, víz. " I give to the Contributors to the Pennsylvania Hospital, and to their Successors, &c. &c."-Contributions and donations are re- ceived by Joseph S. Lewis, Treasurer, No. 25, Dock street.
