This association was for many years successfully employed in promoting the humane system which now predominates in the penal code of Pennsylvania ; the government of the prison of the city and county of Philadelphia having within a few years been intrusted to a board of inspectors appointed by a law of the state, the services of the society have been confined to re- lieving the sufferings of prisoners who have not had trials, and those under sentence for thirty days, both of which description of persons do not come under the care of the inspectors.
