The Good Will was the first fire company organized in Altoona ,and their first appa- ratus, the old Good Will hand engine of Philadelphia, was housed October 22, 1859. The first steam fire engine was purchased by the Pennsylvania railroad company in 1867.
The first bank was opened in Altoona in 1853 by Messrs. Bell, Johnson, Jack & Co. In 1858 the firm name was changed to Wm. M. Lloyd & Co., and the business was con- tinued until the panic of 1873, when the firm suspended.
The first hotel in Altoona was the Ex- change, on Tenth avenue between Thir- teenth and Fourteenth streets, where the Windsor now stands. A tavern where the White Hall hotel now stands was built as early as 1850 by George Huff.
The first newspaper published in Altoona was the Altoona Register, in the spring of 1855. The publication of the Altoona Tri- bune commenced January 1, 1856. The Daily Tribune was commenced April 14, 1873, but April 14, 1875, was discontinued until January 28, 1878. The Evening Mirror started June 13, 1874. The Deutche Volks- fuehrer was started March 28, 1878. The Altoona Times was started May 21, 1884, and the Altoona Gazette April 5, 1892.
Altoona was first laid out in 1849. In that year the Pennsylvania railroad pur- chased the farm of David Robison, extend- ing from Eleventh to Sixteenth streets and from Fourth to Fourteenth avenues, for $10,000, and on it afterwards in 1850, erected the upper or machine shops, and in 1855 the Logan house. The adjoining farms were owned by William Loudon and Andrew Green, who laid them off in town lots, and, while the original plot laid out on the Robison farm was known as Altoona,
that portion lying east of Eleventh street was called Greensburg, and that west of Sixteenth street was called Loudonsville. Afterwards another addition to the eastern end of Greensburg was laid out and called Logantown, and here the new car shops were erected. These distinctive names were retained until 1868, when the city char- ter was obtained, and these farms, together with land lying beyond them, were brought into the city limits and divided into wards.
The first street railway began carrying pas- sengers July 4, 1882. The motive power was changed to electricity July 4, 1891. The first passengers were carried to Hollidaysburg over the Logan Valley Electric railway June 14, 1893, and to Bellwood July 1, 1894.

The first water works in Altoona were owned and operated by the Altoona Gas and Water company, a private corporation, which began to supply the borough with water, De- cember 15, 1859. Gas then sold for $3 per 1,000 feet. The water works was purchased by the city in 1872.
