CIRCULAR LETTER.
OCT.2-8
1810
11910
THE WASHINGTON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
TO ALL ITS MEMBERS SENDS GREETING:
WITH OUR REGARDS :
I. We would announce to each member of our Society that TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1910, the third day of our HOME COMING WEEK, the week of the Centennial Celebration of the Incorporation of the town of Washington into a borough, has been set apart for special exercises under the direction of the Washington County Historical Society, and the attendance of every member is much desired.
2. The Library and Museum of the Society, on the Third Corridor of the Court-house and reached by an elevator from the first floor, will be open all day on the date stated, and possibly in the evening, with a committee of members present to show and explain our valuable and interesting collections. But at 10:30 o'clock A. M., an open meeting of the Society and its friends will be held, to receive an address by CAPTAIN DANIEL ASHWORTH, after which the meeting will take a recess until 2 o'clock P. M.
3. CAPTAIN ASHWORTH served first in the Union Army and last in the U. S. Navy, during the Civil War of 1861-5. and is now the U. S. Pension Agent at Pittsburgh. He is ? patriot and an enthusiast in our early American history, and a most eloquent orator. His subject will be "THE GREAT GATE- WAY" and his illustrative presentation of that subject will make it as bright and interesting as the Great White Way above.
4. Possibly another address of an historical character may be secured for 2 o'clock P. M., but whether so or not, an effort will be made after that hour to have a GROUP PHOTO- GRAPH of all members of the Society, DISTINGUISHED DY A WHITE AND NUMBERED BADGE, with a metal brooch or pin, if it can be obtained of a suitable design and material ; this fur- nished by the Society for a future possession and Keepsake for each member.
5. Further:" We propose to publish soon-a book for each of our members, containing the Charter of Incorporation of our Society and our Constitution and By-laws, with a com- plete roll of all our members with their mail addresses; but we fear that not only the addresses but the names of many men- bers are incorrectly shown upon our lists, as indicated by the fact that complaints have been made that letters and notices do not reach their destination. We must endeavor to correct our lists before publication.
6. We now have on our roll perhaps 400 members, over the county. It is a great labor and quite expensive, even to fill up blanks and to address a notice of meetings or of dues unpaid, to all. To aid us in correcting our names and ad- dresses of members, and in crediting unpaid dues, will not each member receiving this circular send to our Secretary, Mr. M. R. Allen, 129 North Avenue, East Washington, Pa., his or hier correct name and mailing address, with the dues he or she thinks may be in arrears,-$3.00 for admission as a member of the Society, and $I per annum thereafter.
7. All our meetings, except very rarely in emergencies, are held at regular stated times, rain or shine; and to aid members in keeping in mind the dates of meetings, as well as the officers to whom communications may be written or remit- tances made, when notices may go astray, we mail herein a Card with all such information, to be tacked up in an accessi- ble place for easy reference. :
8. A special meeting will be held on the evening of August 15th next, S o'clock P. M., at the Society's Rooms, when new members proposed may be elected. You will please attend if then convenient. But do not fail to attend for the whole day on Tuesday, October 4, 1910, the Historical Day of our Home Coming Week, and assist in its doings. And on receipt of this circular, let each send to our Society a name or names of new members proposed for addition to our number.
We are proud of our Washington County Historical Society, its valuable and interesting collections, and of its al- ready large membership, and we are
Yours very truly, etc.,
